I’m writing to let you know about an event this Saturday in Greenpoint called “1,000lbs of Meat”. Basically, the folks at t.b.d. are going to grill up and give away 1,000lbs of burgers (and veggie burgers), hot dogs, Italian sausages, plus loads of sides & salads. While free food is great, there’s another part of the event that’s closer to my heart. They’ll be having a raffle to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project which is a non-profit dedicated to assisting injured service members. As a wounded warrior myself, I can attest to what a great organization it is.

Insound is having another of their warehouse sales tomorrow which I know some of you wait for. And this time the free beer is from Brooklyn Brewery!
We’re having another open warehouse sale at our Greenpoint office next Thursday, 8/25. The event is from 5pm – 8pm with free beverages provided throughout. We’ll have a bunch of limited vinyl, tees, posters, sale items and more. Full details are on the flyer and there are more details here.

Donation based Yoga classes are starting at GPCW on August 15th. I especially like that the classes “will be geared toward preparing for and undoing the damage that’s done when sitting at a computer or standing all day”. Affordable and useful to everyone!
Starting August 15th, Greenpoint Coworking will be launching a new, donation-based Yoga program: Yoga for Working People. We believe that when we take care of ourselves – spiritually, mentally and physically – we place ourselves in the ideal position to do the best work. Classes will be offered before and after normal work hours, and will be geared toward preparing for and undoing the damage that’s done when sitting at a computer or standing all day. All teachers are certified yoga instructors.
Donation-based rates:
Typically, yoga classes cost between $12-20, however we believe yoga should be accessible to everyone so we’ve designed a pay-what-you-can, donation-based program. Classes are FREE for dedicated members of the space and we suggest a $5 donation for community members. All classes operate on a first come first serve basis. We have mats available to rent for $2.

All classes will be Vinyasa-based, except for the Tuesday morning class which will be Kundalini-style. We’ll be updating this schedule on our website with class descriptions and instructor bios shortly.

This weekend I had the chance to sample some delicious Brooklyn-made cocktail bitters from one of the guys who brews them. Benjamin Ahr Harrison and friends run Hella Bitter, a small-batch bitters company recently founded in Williamsburg and sold at a select few NYC specialty shops. There are three different flavors; Citrus, Wormwood Aromatic and Vanilla Kumquat—all brewed and bottled by hand.
Hella Bitter is currently trying to raise money to start a Bitters & Seltzer cart intended to wheel the sophistication around the neighborhood. Watch the kickstarter video here and help make it happen or swing by Whisk and pick yourself up a bottle or two.
Mama’s is bringing its delicious fried chicken and legendary mac and cheese to Greenpoint via Mama’s Pop-Up Restaurant inside Veronica People’s Club.
Starting July 20th, plates of fried chicken, pork shoulder, seasonal veggies, and mac and cheese will be available to eat in or take out every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 6 pm – 10 pm at Veronica People’s Club on 105 Franklin St. Prices are cheaper than the East Village location ($10 for 3 veggie sides, $11 meat + 1 side, $12 meat + 2 sides), but the portions are just as generous, and it coincides with VPC happy hour. Additional special: New England Narragansett beer $3 with Mama’s food.
What’s even better? A full location complete with beer and wine is coming to Williamsburg as soon as next month!
