  1. Hot-Smoking for Gold at ACME Smoked Fish

Meet Aftabudin Rayman and Peter Wojick, the fish smokers behind the hot-smoked fish division at ACME Smoked Fish in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. ACME Smoked Fish is the largest smoked fish house in the country, processing 6-8 million pounds of assorted fish for stores and seafood counters every year. According to Rayman, the head fish smoker, “to be successful at this job, you can’t look at it as just a job, an ordinary job”. To him, a successful fish smoker’s priority should be the fish, always the fish, that internal drive to achieve moist, smoky meat with a perfect golden hue everytime – not doing the job “to get an increase in pay”. And running a hot-smoked fish operation isn’t an easy task: working 10-12 hour days on your feet, constantly breathing in smoke, wheeling heavy racks of hanging fish over slippery floors. It’s physically demanding, which is why devotion like Rayman’s is hard to come by.

So come watch their story and discover the fascinating and delicate process of hot-smoking fish. It truly is a craft, a craft that takes passion, a certain “thoughtlessness” to it, and tens of years to master. Enjoy!

And for a real Brooklyn experience, stop by on Fish Fridays at ACME where they open up the smokehouse outlet to the local Greenpoint community for 5 hours to shop for freshly smoked seafood. You’ll get to meet the employees and mingle with loyal ACME customers who’ve been eating their product for decades. Here’s the address:

  2. Speaking of Food Trucks…

    July 27, 2011 by Janello

My latest food project hits NYC!

Six weeks ago I pitched a solar powered ice pop truck to my client, Sungevity, I didn’t think I’d be standing in Rockefeller Center yesterday basking in the orange solar glow of a push-button, auto-articulating, air ride equipped, natural ice pop dispensing, ex-postal step van. Nor did I think I’d be watching the 30 person line double in size by the minute with happy NYers grabbing their hibiscus mint or Mango flavored all natural ice pops. But I was. And today I am doing the same thing at Grand Central and Bryant Park. From NYC this baby heads to Boston and then Jersey and maybe even as far as Maryland. Unfortunately we are not hitting Greenpoint.

What’s on board are these beautiful delicious pops made by the guys at Good Pops, out of Austin.

  3. The Vibrator Truck is Coming…

    by Justine

    Or should I say cumming?

Trojan® is launching their Good Vibrations Truck Tour, which will make stops to shake things up at various hot spots around the city, including Brooklyn. It will line up aside quintessential New York food trucks, showcasing its newest vibrator innovations to pleasure-seekers. This will serve as another “vehicle” to help mainstream conversations around vibrators.

The Vibrator Truck will hit Williamsburg Friday night at The Williamsburg Waterfront’s They Might Be Giants concert. There’s another dick joke in there somewhere…

  4. Summertime and Fresh Road

New pavement is being laid south of the BQE, in either southern Greenpoint (historically) or East Williamsburg (presently). (Given that the old Greenpoint Hospital was at 300 Skillman Avenue, the former seems more appropriate.)

Update 8.4.11: The Brooklyn Paper reports they nabbed the suspect Felix Lagoa.

Studio Jewelry on Nassau Avenue was robbed early this afternoon and the owner, Richard Sanocki shot in the stomach by the thieves. Word is the owner will be ok. The robbers/shooters are still at large.

  6. An Art & Food Collaborative Shindig July 28th

    by Joann

Kat & Sam are two of the wildest, foodiest, creative and talented chicks I know and I’m proud to share their upcoming food & art extravaganza: Something I Ate. Basics of the event goes like this: artists are asked to document a week’s worth of their eating experience and produce an art piece in whatever medium their choose. Using these works as inspiration, Chef Sam Kim (aka Skimkim Foods) will create a special dish paired with cocktails for everyone to indulge. Talk about indulgent consumption!

“With Something I Ate, we intend to share various perceptions of food in everyday life and give creatives a dynamic atmosphere in which to potentially collaborate with other creatives on their own future work. The idea is from food, we derive pleasure, satisfaction, energy and inspiration and these elements, whether cognizant of them or not, ignite our creative fires. We hope that by engaging in a ‘breaking bread’ environment creatives will become more at home to explore working with other creatives in the room.”

  8. Four!!!!

    July 24, 2011 by Justine

The Greenpointers turns 4 today! Can you believe it? Four years since I started this blog, when I first moved back to the neighborhood. It has evolved so much in that time… From a simple “girl back in the ‘hood” concept to the go-to site for everything Greenpoint. Pretty awesome ride, indeed.

I’d like to take this time to thank all the members of the community who read The Greenpointers. And there are a lot of you! Every month since I started this blog the visits have gone up. In fact, just in the short few months since I moved the blog to it’s own dedicated website, the hits are even more than they were on Blogger. Over 2,000 followers on Twitter and over 5,000 (!!) fans on Facebook! It just blows my mind how many people are connected to this blog. And I thank you all for reading it, following it, and fan-ing it!

I’ve been able to help out my neighbors by answering their questions,  getting the word out about events, raising awareness about issues, and helping local businesses get noticed. It’s been absolutely nothing but tons of fun being able to check out places and stuff that I might have otherwise missed out on.

Another amazing benefit of this blog is the people I’ve had a chance to either meet, collaborate with or just email chat with. Especially the truly spectacular writers who have joined me in the past and present. I’ve even gained a few friends in the process.

This is my last year in Greenpoint. In September 2012 I’ll be moving to upstate New York. Greenpoint will always be where I came from, but it’s time to move on. The neighborhood has changed immensely, both for the better and for the worse. It’s always hard to see what was once yours, unrecognizable. But change is healthy, and I wish Greenpoint the best in its continuing transformation.

The blog will be active until the moving trucks arrive! After that, I’m not sure what will become of The Greenpointers. I’d hate to see the site die a slow, inactive, internet abyss death. That would break my heart. But seeing it turn into a spam search site would kill me even more. Any person or group I’d consider selling it to would have to promise to see The Greenpointers live on, just as it has, evolving with the neighborhood. It wouldn’t be about the highest bidder, it’d be about the most committed. But that’s still a year away and I have lots left to contribute before I’m gone. And like the saying goes, it ain’t over til the fat lady sings!

I’m looking forward to this years holiday Greenpoint Gift Guide. It was a smashing success last year and I really want to amp it up this year. I’m hoping to have even more shops, restaurants and local businesses contribute and even more deals, discounts and exclusive offers for The Greenpointers readers. This holiday season, you’re gonna be able to get ALL your shopping done within walking distance of your house.

    Thank you!

  9. Get Your Sound On at McCarren Park Tomorrow

    July 23, 2011 by Joann

No Bills: Stories of North Brooklyn combines sound installation and documentary by featuring oral histories of the North Brooklyn community. Organized by North Brooklyn Public Art with artist Nick Yulman, live stations are installed throughout the neighborhood including McCarren Park Pool. “By presenting these stories as a public sound installation, we hope to create serendipitous encounters for people on the street that will pique their curiosity about the neighborhood and encourage them to ask questions of those around them” says Yulman, who will be hosting tours tomorrow at 1:30 & 2:30pm. Find more details and rsvp here and make sure to check out and support North Brooklyn Public Art’s Kickstarter campaign!
