A new wine and crepe bar is opening on Franklin Street this Saturday!

Reader Alyssa emails:
I biked by it yesterday. I think its called ‘Wine a Bit’ and opening Saturday (I think on India at Franklin) next to the hair metal salon. Wine and Crepe bar.

After a little research it’s apparently called Wyne a Bit and it’s at 200 Franklin Street at the corner of India in the ‘new’ building that already houses the lovely Julia James Boutique and Hair Metal Salon.

ROOFTOP FILMS: HOME MOVIES AND COMMERCIAL KINGS (Short Films)
A special collection of short films that let us peak into the lives of strangers, plus a special sneak preview of Commercial Kings, a new series on IFC. For decades people have been making home movies; capturing what they feel are important times in their lives. Home movies are made up of personal and special moments that someone wanted to document and never forget—and most of the time they rarely get seen again. But it’s a pleasure to watch them, to peek into someone else’s life, to feel a little voyeuristic. This year’s edition of Rooftop’s “Home Movies” draws inspiration from the tradition of the home movie, building off tropes of self-documentation to create accomplished works of art, and honoring the life and death of a town, paying homage to wrestling fathers and grandfather’s unknown, and giving voice to boozy family members who make you laugh and truly scare you at the same time.

The Films:
MY BIG RED PURSE (Giancarlo Iannotta | Chicago, IL | 4 min.)
GRANDPA LOOKED LIKE WILLIAM POWELL (David Levy | Brooklyn, NY | 4 min.)
WRESTLING WITH MY FATHER (Charles Fairbanks | Lexington, NE | 5 min.)
FAMILY NIGHTMARE (Dustin Guy Defa | Salt Lake City, Utah | 9 min.)
FOR HOME VIEWING (Mikhail Zheleznikov | Russia | 29 min.)
WEE REQUIEM (Jenn E. Norton | Canada | 7 min.)
WELCOME TO PINE POINT (Paul Shoebridge and Michael Simons of The Goggles | Canada | 14 min.)
COMMERCIAL KINGS (Todd Cohen | USA | 23 min.)

The Habitat: Wednesdys Off

One of my favorite local spots – The Habitat – are taking Wednesdays off for the Summer so the crew can have some fun of their own!

The Habitat will be on a Wednesday hiatus throughout the summer until September. We can most likely be found sipping cold beers on the beach, hosting backyard barbeques, or bar hopping with the locals. Please continue to enjoy our delicious amenities every other day of the week. Happy Summer!

You can still enjoy their cool events and like Late Night Saturday Movies, Weekend Brunch specials, and purchase kickass screenprinted posters.

Ferry Frustrations

Earlier this week, I greeted my work day aboard the upper deck of the East River Ferry, which just started service from Greenpoint’s brand new India St. Pier. My fellow passengers and I lined the ships railings like wide-eyed pilgrims, taking in the curious wonders of the shoreline as we passed. We arrived at 34th street in under ten minutes, our sea legs barely earned.

India St. Pier
Passengers lined up Saturday for Greenpoint's new East River Ferry service.

Once in Manhattan however, the connecting shuttle bus detailed on the pier’s ferry map failed to materialize and I ended up walking the twenty or so blocks to my midtown office. I did eye some possible pre-ferry/after work watering holes within the squeaky clean blocks of Murray Hill (Pinetree Lodge you may have a Greenpoint regular). I would recommend bringing your bike as the travel options from that far east on the island are pretty limited and are not eligible for a transfer. Over all the experience was pleasant but not entirely practical.

The weekend service was a different story. On Saturday, my girlfriend and I waited for twenty-five minutes amongst a growing crowd on the pier, which was shadeless and hot in the mid-morning sun. The boat eventually docked and soon a ferryman approached us from the opposite side of the gate. “Only 6 of you…” He told the crowd of about fifty, a dozen of them a group of teenage bicyclists perhaps hoping to spend the day riding and picnicking on the lush greens of Governors Island. The lucky few hurried on board, the rest of us left to wait another half-hour on the pier, or to give up entirely.

I’m sure ridership will drop-off significantly once NY Waterways begins charging four-dollars a ride and I do understand that they need a few weeks to work out the kinks (they’ve already issued and advisory addressing capacity issues), but their slogan “Relax. We’ll get you there.” might take some time to stick. Our neighborhood has been underserviced for a long time and the Ferry is certainly part of the solution, but it may take some coordination with the MTA before a sea voyage becomes a practical part of many Greenpointers commutes.

Groupon: Peachfrog

Peachfrog via New York Magazine
Today’s Groupon offers $60 worth of merchandise from Peachfrog for $25. An extra incentive to spread the word: if more than 1,000 Groupons are sold, the value of the Groupon will increase to $70. Check out Brokelyn’s review. If you’re a bargain shopper, this is a must buy!

From the Groupon site: Peachfrog filters the finest overstock and liquidated apparel, accessories, and housewares, diluting them down to their purest and lowest-priced form by offering savings of 50%–90% off retail prices.

The website lists this under Greenpoint although I’m pretty sure this is in Williamsburg.
