  2. Breukelen Bier Merchants

    by Justine

Last week I got an email from reader Fred telling me about his cousins new beer store opening up in Williamsburg. From his note, Breukelen Bier Merchants sounds like THE new spot in BBurg to pick up your growlers…

There’s two ways to do the place: mix a six pack and fill a growler for home, or hang out drinking a pint or bottle at the wood tables in back with a rather enticing view of gallons and gallons of beer.

It’s not a bar, but the atmosphere is pretty similar (they went vintage Prohibition with the style). There’s 16 beers on tap for growlers or pints and 100s of bottles in the fridges. The dirty little secret? The bottles start at $2.50 or thereabouts, so you can grab way better beer than most bars, with a bigger selection, for half the price.

They’ve got food, too, the sort you’d want to go along with beer. Pressed sammies, Bavarian pretzels smothered in aged cheddar or jalapeno jack, or toasted croissants with Nutella and sliced bananas. (The foods are locally sourced.)

There’s a beer garden coming in summer, and there’s free wifi, so you can really camp out, eating and drinking till you get your fancy-beer loving fill.

And according to their website – they’re having a Grand Opening Party on June 4th. Come down and celebrate the recent opening of Breukelen Bier Merchants with live music, complimentary food, discounts, giveaways and a fine selection of craft beers.

  3. The Lobster Joint

The heavily anticipated restaurant set to take the place of the recently closed Lamb & Jaffey, The Lobster Joint is set to open tomorrow! The interior has a definite white-washed New England vibe going on and the menu is chock full of comforting seafood choices like lobster rolls, crab cake sandwiches, lobster mac n’ cheese, fish and chips, and more. – via Brooklyn Based

This is one of the most exciting new openings to come to Greenpoint lately and I plan to check it out right after the holiday weekend!

  4. I Just Want My Pants Back, Tommy

    by Justine

Reader and friend from the ‘hood Marisha emailed me this hysterical little tidbit from The Wall Street Journal on a new MTV show being shot almost exclusively in Greenpoint and how a bartender at Tommy’s Tavern gave them shit – which is pretty awesome.

Another forthcoming series, MTV’s “I Just Want My Pants Back,” a comedy about four recent college graduates, will be filmed almost exclusively on location in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

“Setting it in a place like Greenpoint was really important for me because a key aspect of the show is that you have these two different groups”—trendy 20-somethings and longtime Polish residents—”vying for the same airspace,” said co-executive producer Doug Liman, whose previous work includes directing “Swingers.” “The friction between those two groups is something I was passionate about getting on screen.”

The show’s other executive producer, David Bartis, who is based in Los Angeles, recalled the enjoyable unpredictability of filming on location in New York. He described an incident in which they called the police on an intoxicated bartender at Greenpoint bar Tommy’s Tavern, where they filmed the pilot. The bartender refused to leave the premises, Messrs. Bartis and Liman said, making it impossible for them to continue filming.

Reached by phone, the owner of Tommy’s Tavern, Thomas Kaminski, said their account was inaccurate, though police records confirm that police responded to a call at that location concerning a bartender who was “intoxicated and making threats to crew members.”

“It’s probably one of the reasons why you shoot in New York—because you want to live in a reality that creeps into your production,” Mr. Liman said. “If you look carefully, I’m sure you can see him in the background.”

I couldn’t find any info on when the show is actually going to begin airing, though it sounds like it will either be thoroughly entertaining to laugh at the hipsterificness of it all or infuriating…

  5. Poster Pride

    May 25, 2011 by Justine

A few months ago I met with Michael and Karen of Two Arms Inc. – specialists of the hand made, hand pulled silkscreen poster – and we kicked around the idea of a poster that would rep Greenpoint proper. Half brainstorming session, half trip down memory lane, I couldn’t imagine the poster turning out any more amazing. They included awesome touches like the Rite-Aid disco ball leftover from the days of the roller rink, the G train, McCarren Park pool – complete with graffitti, even our Polish pride water tower. They rocked it.

They expanded to a pair of posters – one for Greenpoint and one for Wiliamsburg. To make things even better, they’ve decided this will be the beginning of a Brooklyn neighborhood series.

You need to click, purchase and love these bad boys right now. Each neighborhood is an 18″ x 24″ Limited Edition Artprint on French Speckletone Kraft Paper in 3 colors, signed and numbered in an edition of 100.

If you’re lucky, there will be enough left when Two Arms Inc. is at the Renegade Craft Fair in a couple of weeks.

  8. Greenpoint Veterans Memorial Parade

    by Justine

This years Greenpoint Veterans Memorial Parade is set for Sunday May 29th. The parade is a time honored tradition of the neighborhood and I think one of the only times you get to hear bagpipes going down Manhattan Avenue.

The ‘Greenpoint Veterans Memorial Parade Committee’ is composed primarily of members of local Greenpoint groups including Lexington Council #293 of the Knights of Columbus, St. Stanislaus Memorial Post #1771, American Legion, and The Slovak Citizens Club.
