A Darling Charity Event

One of the most memorable nights in recent years was the night I met Ron Darling. And I met him at Red Star! The stars are about to align again with Ron & Red Star and this time to benefit The Ron Darling Foundation, an organization dedicated primarily to juvenile diabetes research.

Red Start is hosting The First Annual metroBASEBALL Ambassador Awards whose honorees are Ron Darling and The Ron Darling Foundation; Jack Curran, the revered baseball coach from Archbishop Molloy HS; and husband and wife Phil and Denise Galasso, the the founders of the Greenpoint Little League. Brooklyn’s own Ken Dashow, the much-beloved Q104.3 Classic Rock disc jockey is also emceeing!

This is a fabulous event that’s going to showcase and honor people in our community. For just $150 – which is a contribution to a great cause! – gets you an open bar cocktail hour, a four-course dinner upstairs in Red Star’s private event space, autographs, and a special metroBASEBALL gift bag. Seating is limited to 50 people, so I would buy tickets now if you’re interested. This will have a lot of Greenpoint’s movers and shakers there.

There are also tickets for the cocktail party only. These tickets are $30 and include a 1 hour open bar, a meet and greet with Ron Darling, autographs and photos.

Poster Party

Poster Party is a pretty simple concept – Movie posters drawn with magic markers.

The talented Tim Bierbaum of Serious Lunch is having an art show this Friday at The Habitat. According to his friend Michael Glennon who gave me the heads up, Tim’s inspired by the box and poster art of movie posters from the Suncoast video era of his time spent at shopping malls. His friends are contributing too.

Taking a look at the tumblr page for the project, Poster Party looks like a lot of fun. Anyone who decides drawing the movie poster for Kid n’ Play’s (TOTALLY UNDERAPPRECIATED!!) movie Class Act, is a-ok with me. The show runs April 22nd – May 20th.

Something I Ate: April 29th

I’m co-curating this riotous food and art event, Something I Ate. Artists are invited to create an artwork somehow reflecting a week’s worth of their eating habits and Sam Kim of (Skimkim fame) will concoct a dish derived from each artist’s work. Visitors fall victim to this visual-sensual gluttony, a multi-consumptive experience that very well may leave you passed out in a state of oversaturated art-food coma. Thirty bucks for entry might sound steep but consider the fact this ain’t your run of the mill art show. There will be thoughtfully created dishes for your eating pleasure, drinks provided by Kanon Organic Vodka, and music provided by Skimkim herself. This is one event you won’t want to miss.

Tickets here.

Northside Open Studios: Meet & Greet: April 26th

Greenpoint Open Studios (which I’ve been organizing with an amazing team and is proudly in its third year running) is teaming up with L magazine’s Northside Festival this year to bring you NORTHSIDE OPEN STUDIOS, a four day event celebrating a burgeoning art scene in Greenpoint and Williamsburg, Brooklyn. As artist studios and exhibition spaces continue to emerge in the neighborhood we hope to facilitate the growth of a thriving art community.

Registration is now OPEN and we encourage artists working in all mediums to register online by May 15th. There is a Meet & Greet on April 26th 7:30pm at Brooklyn Brewery located at 79 North 11th Street and we will discuss registration, programming, and any questions you may have. It is very important that you join us in the meeting and get to know each other and learn about NOS over a complimentary free beer!

Please help us spread the word, our goal is to reach 300 participating artists who can take advantage of the 10,000 brochure copies that will be widely printed and distributed throghout brooklyn, not to mention a vast opportunity for viewership and attendance.

Follow us on twitter, like us on Facebook, and share the open call invite. Feel free to also post any announcements and listings on our page, whether it’s an upcoming show or an available studio down the hall.

5 Boros Basketball Fundraiser

I’ve written about the 5 Boros Basketball group before. They are a great bunch of people who help local kids succeed in basketball and help them obtain scholarships for their skills on the court. They also host a clinic every Saturday in JHS 126 from 8:30 am – 10:30 am for 4th and 5th and 6th graders.

PLUS, they’re a bunch of WINNERS! 5 Boros Basketball teams have entered three tournaments in the past three months and have won all of them – not bad for a new program! Check out these kids:

This month they are having their first official fundraising event. Dinner and dancing at the American Legion 1771. Cash bar, raffles and prizes – all for $25 and all to help local kids. Win-win!
