  1. New York Polish Film Festival

    April 29, 2011 by Justine

I very, very rarely post things outside of Greenpoint – nevermind in the city – but I feel like this is definitely of interest to the Polish community and well, who’s got more of a Polish community than us?

    Dear Justine,

My name is Isabel Gardocki, and I am currently a public relations volunteer for the 7th Annual New York Polish Film Festival (“NYPFF”), which is taking place this year from May 4th to May 8th at the Anthology Film Archives in downtown Manhattan. The NYPFF is the
largest festival of Polish films on the East Coast, and showcases acclaimed selections of features, short films, and documentaries that were all created by Polish filmmakers.

This year, we are hoping to generate interest in the NYPFF among more New York City college students and professionals, and thus would like to share the attached flier. We have a modest advertising budget, and would really appreciate it if you could forward this information to your members.

You can find more information about the festival at: http://www.nypff.com/

    Thank you,

    Isabel Gardocki

  4. Rock The Bells

    April 24, 2011 by Justine

A few weeks ago the bells of St. Anthony’s stopped ringing. Turns out they’re broken beyond repair and the estimate to fix them is at least $10k. The church’s annual raffle is going to be dedicated solely to raising funds for the repairs, but in order to help reach further into the community and to Greenpointers far and wide, a ChipIn site has been set up.

So many churches and catholic schools in the area have gone under over the years, St. Anthony’s bells chiming on the hour shouldn’t go, too. Dig in to your pocket and chip in a few bucks towards the repairs and towards bringing a little old school Greenpoint back.

    Spread the word!

  6. Manhattan Deli & Rachel’s Garden

    April 23, 2011 by Justine

Back in January a reader emailed me about the closure of Manhattan Deli & Grocery and wondered what was to become of it. My darling pal Michelle texted me the answer – it appears that the place has re-opened and is being run by the folks behind Rachel’s Garden just down the street.

Featuring a fruit stand out front and a more gourmet spin with European brands and a deli counter.

  7. Greenpoint Caper Break Up

    by Justine

John Milhiser, part of the Award Winning Sketch Group Serious Lunch (which all live in Greenpoint), recently shot a sketch with the talented Edmond Hawkins on Freeman Street. And it’s pretty funny!

  10. Boneshakers Moves On

    April 21, 2011 by Justine

Just got a bummer email from reader Sam:

Sad news for those of us in SE Greenpoint /E Williamsburg: Boneshakers has closed the curtain on 134 Kingsland for the last time and moved in with Champs Bakery at 176 Ainslie. Signs on the door suggested that they were having lease trouble, and the owners weren’t willing to cut them a break:

“We will miss you all so much. Thank you for loving us back. We learned the hard way that people with the big buck$ have hearts of stone. (heart) you!! – Everyone at Boneshakers.”

Boneshakers was one of the best parts about this neck of the woods. Good food and coffee, reasonable prices, friendly staff, lots of tables and free wi-fi. I’m glad they’ll still operate out of Champs, though that’s another mile down the way. Shame.

Good news: Champs/Boneshakers is having brunch this Sat/Sun.

This is very sad. The area where Boneshakers was located doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that the others parts of nabe have. I’m sure it will be SORELY missed by locals over there. But I guess it’s also nice to celebrate them moving on to room with Champs.
