Well, the Brooklyn Night Bazaar is not gonna happen. I think I may have been the only person in the neighborhood who was in support of the event, but the community uproar stopped the event dead in its tracks. Aaron says maybe in 2012… but the website is back to the old “email for info” state and I guess the dream is dead.

Vote For The April Baseball Sandwich
March 29, 2011 by Justine
My peeps at The Halcyon Gourmet are letting their Twitter pals vote for their April sandwich of the month – A baseball themed nosh! Your choices?
Take Me Out To The (Meat)Ball Game Hero – Halcyon’s meatball sub. Simple enough and sure to be delicioussssss.
or
The Pretzels & Dog Sammy – Kielbasa with sauerkraut, munster cheese and dijon mayo on pretzel bread. Not so simple and I’m intrigued by the idea of pretzel bread. And by intrigued I mean, totally in love!

Brooklyn Fork & Spoon Supper Club
by Justine
Supper Clubs have become very popular lately. Brooklyn Fork & Spoon is located in Greenpoint and offers “a vegetarian based menu where just about everything can be eaten with a fork and spoon”. Next supper is scheduled for this Sunday and includes a menu with bruschetta. And really, who doesn’t totally love bruschetta?

Brooklyn Night Bazaar Community Meeting
March 25, 2011 by Justine
A little over a month ago I posted about the Brooklyn Night Bazaar. Tomorrow they are holding a meeting to let the community voice their concerns and to respond to them.
Now I realize that people are already all up in arms over this. Especially the fact that they plan to serve alcohol and be open until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights for five months straight.
I live a few blocks from where this will take place and I am very interested in seeing it happen. That said, I don’t live RIGHT there and I don’t own my home. Large events like this happen all the time and some work and some don’t. I’m in support of this one and from what I’ve been privy to, they seem to be taking everything into consideration. They’re holding a meeting for the community THREE months before they even start. To me, that’s a good sign.
I think it would be nice for the community. Something different and fun for everyone. There are many ways for this to go wrong, but I’m choosing to think it will go right. Are people going to be getting wasted at a market? I personally wouldn’t, but I’d definitely be apt to grab a beer while I shop and eat and then maybe catch dinner and another drink or two at the local bars and restaurants within walking distance. But that’s just me. You should go to the meeting to see and hear exactly what it’s going to be about.
Special thanks to Greenpointers reader Julie for sending me the above photos. :)

The Utopianist
by Justine
Back when I started this blog, the coolest local blog on the block was Williamsburg Is Dead, created by Keith Wagstaff. Since then Keith has been involved with a number of projects and his latest venture with Brian Merchant is The Utopianist. And they are celebrating their launch next Wednesday March 30th at Veronica People’s Club right here in Greenpoint.
The Utopianist is the new online magazine dedicated to examining the big ideas in politics, technology and design that are driving society closer to perfection. Don’t worry, we’re not quite there yet — there’s still plenty to write about. Our goal is to take each of those topics, peel away the noise — no horse race politics, no ‘iPad vs iPad 2′ features, no ‘Sarah Palin is an idiot’, etc — and to examine the truly rich ideas emerging in each that could improve society the world over. And of course, we’ll take a look at full-on utopian ideas too, new and old.
But we’re not just going to blog about a perfect civilization — we’re going to get under the skin of this one, too, and try to pinpoint the structural issues holding us back from real progress. We’ll comb the news and pop culture to better understand how consumerism, corporatism, and widening income inequality are deeply, deeply pissing off ordinary citizens — and obstructing democracy. Our Capitalist Jukebox will play the hits — music, video, music videos! — that mine this culture of resentment for inspiration. Our Daily Stat will point to an instance of injustice for daily consideration.
In other words, the Utopianist should become the ideal destination for those inclined to have a good time thinking bigger. To celebrate the launch, we’re throwing a party at Veronica’s People Club with:
Free Sixpoint beer (this is Utopia, remember!), but only on first come first serve (all good things must end)
The musical stylings of DJ Le Chev (Fischerspooner, AVAN LAVA).So do come join us, and help us kick off our quest for Utopia in style.
March 30th, 7-10 pm (open bar starts at 7).

Onyx Cafe – Sports Bar?
by Justine
Onyx Cafe has been around for awhile. I’ve never been inside but from what I know it was a Polish bar/cafe/club kinda joint. Reader Ryan sent me an email that they’ve been closed and are doing some work inside. Also, he sent a pic of their little homemade sign out front about a “Sports Bar” coming soon.
Seems like it’s the same owners maybe doing some re-designing? Anyone know?

Representin’
by Justine
Dmitry Gudkov is a photographer and Greenpoint resident who’s been doing a photo series on New Yorkers who bike in the city. Five of these portraits are being used in the Ride Guide/magazine for the upcoming Five Boro Bike Tour. The magazine, which is included in the ride packet for each of the 30,000+ riders of the Tour, features 5 cyclists, one representing each borough of NYC.

Sheryl by Dmitry Gudkov Representing the borough of Brooklyn is none other than Greenpoint’s own Sheryl a.k.a. Ms. BitchCakes. Not only that, but she is photographed in front of the Terminal Warehouse and its giant “GREENPOINT” sign in the background. I think that’s pretty cool. You can see the piece here and Dmitry’s wonderful shots of Sheryl here.
