  1. Quickie: Eardrum

    January 31, 2011 by Justine

Editor John Ruscher dropped me an e-mail about the recently relaunched EardrumNYC.com, a New York music website, with a new design and lots of new features. You can create user accounts and custom calendars of upcoming shows, and even an embeddable calendar widget of your favorite upcoming shows.

They also now have neighborhood pages, including one for Greenpoint, with a venue map and dates of upcoming shows. This is SO much easier than trying to keep up with all the bars and clubs calendars and schedules in the neighborhood now. Deerhoof is playing at Europa next Tuesday!

  2. Quickie: After Dinner Design

    January 27, 2011 by Justine

About a year and a half ago, the NYTimes featured a house in the Catskills and the article followed the work a Brooklyn couple had done on their little country home using a good deal of creative thinking and a very small budget. I specifically remember this article since the couple was from Williamsburg and they spent under $2500 in decorating from places like thrift shops and scouring Craigslist.

The couple Christina Salway of ElevenTwoEleven Design & John Moskowitz sent me an email about their latest project – their Williamsburg apartment!

My husband and I are at it again, this time we’re in the throws of renovating our apartment in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and have begun the exciting process of documenting our progress with a blog called: After Dinner Design. The concept is basically that John and I both work full-time Monday through Friday jobs here in Brooklyn, so we’re completing the entire renovation ourselves, every evening from 8:00 until midnight, hence the title: After Dinner Design.

This is sure to be an interesting progression and it’s perfect for people like me who always want to take on a project like this but instead just sit at my computer all day and drool over those before and after photos.

  3. Letter Campaign: Proposed Homeless Shelter

    January 24, 2011 by Justine

Reader Christine emailed me these items that were in the St Stan’s bulletin regarding the proposed homeless shelter. I strongly suggest everyone taking the time to read, distribute, share and send the letter to our councilman:

    Stephen Levin
    410 Atlantic Avenue
    Brooklyn, NY 11217
    (or)
    slevin@council.nyc.gov

    Dear Council Member Levin,

I am writing to express my opposition to a proposal to site a 200-bed assessment center at 400 McGuinness Boulevard in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn. As a Greenpoint resident I urge you to reconsider this project.

The proposed assessment center will not alleviate the homelessness problem that our neighborhood already faces. Greenpoint’s significant homeless population is primarily made up of Polish-speaking, chronic public inebriates. Many of these men have deep roots in our community, and I believe it is important to have a shelter to accommodate them and allow them to begin recovery.

In the recent winter weeks, many of these men have bee seen sleeping in the Greenpoint parks, on the waterfront street-ends, and under the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Without adequate shelter, these men are in grave danger this winter. In fact, one homeless man died while sleeping in McCarren Park on December 9, 2010, when the low overnight temperature was 23o F. Instead of dealing with our neighborhoods’ homelessness issues, the assessment center would add to our problem by introducing 200 more homeless men to the area.

Furthermore, the site itself is isolated from active street life and public transportation. The proposed assessment center is located at the foot of the Pulaski Bridge, on one of Brooklyn’s most dangerous thoroughfares. The nearest subway station is eight blocks away.

Greenpoint already bears more than its fair share of city services. Our neighborhood is home to the City’s largest sewage treatment facility, a number of waste transfer stations, a federal Superfund site, and dozens of other environmental concerns. This center would be one more area in which Greenpoint was asked to shoulder a disproportionate amount of city services.

I urge you to help the men in our neighborhood instead of adding to our community’s homelessness problem. I strongly believe that a 200-bed assessment enter is the wrong facility for Greenpoint.

    Sincerely,

  4. Cafe Royal Closed

    January 20, 2011 by Justine

Rutila sent in this pic and tip that Cafe Royal closed. Just under a year old, the Cody Utzman owned cafe is “closing its doors to the public” but states it “hopes to reopen very soon”. Curiouser and curiouser.

  5. Communal Workspace for the Lonesome Freelancer

    January 18, 2011 by Joann

North Brooklyn is teeming with freelance creatives and independent workers. Graphic designers, writers, journalists, illustrators, website developers and the like often spend their days isolated in their “home office” rockin’ pajamas and a hot cup of coffee. No Big Brother corporate meetings, no annoying co-workers, no commuting 45 minutes on the G train, and no waiting in line for a soggy sandwich at Korean bodegas. The life of a freelance worker sounds ideal until you consider unsteady income and the constant search for new gigs. Also we need to consider that working independently can be goddamn lonely and isolating.

This lack of social interaction, community building, skill sharing and all around cho-chumming has inspired Sara Bacon, president of the design firm Command C, to open a communal workspace for these office-less lone rangers as a means to “nourish community in a beautiful and professional environment while fostering individual work.” Greenpoint CoWorking opened 2 weeks ago and when taking a peek inside I felt immediately comforted by the clean row of table space, a fully functional kitchen, a dining table/meeting area, a reading corner equipped with 2 giant almost-too-comfortable fatboy cushions. On top of it all there was a shy little dog named Sushi who greeted you at the door.

Prices range on levels of commitment, which includes a $25 drop ins and a $250/month “dedicated community member” where you’re reserved a deskspace all to yourself.

I’m super excited about the prospect of Greenpoint CoWorking’s joining a community of creatives and hope all you lonely folks out there will take advantage of this opportunity to work and mingle, in that order.

  6. Questions: Manhattan Deli

    by Justine

Reader Brian shot me this email regarding the Manhattan Deli & Grocery at 82 Nassau Avenue. A quick internet search turned up a bunch of wrong things stating Loren was at that address (it’s not – that’s the next block over at 80 Nassau Ave).

I did notice this was closed a couple of weeks ago, but unfortunately I don’t know whether it’s temporary or permanent. If anyone does feel free to post a comment or shoot me an email at greenpointers@gmail.com.

if anyone will know it’s you….why have they been shut down for the past few weeks? were they closed due to health department or are they on extended vaca or what? it’s the one next to the hipster-fied Schmooks (with bad pizza…ugh….) on Manhattan and Nassau

  7. Save the Date: 2nd Annual Best Wings in Brooklyn!

    by Justine

Red Star is hosting the 2nd Annual Best Wings in Brooklyn Competition Saturday February 12th at 2pm. If you went to last years you know it was a packed out success. Plan to show up early this year to get in.

Will Crown Heights’ “SUPER WINGS” be able to defend their title? Maybe Greenpoint’s “RED STAR” gains the upper hand this time around? What about perennial favorites like Park Slope’s “BONNIE’S GRILL,” or Williamsburg’s “BUFFALO CANTINA”? Can they draw the crowds and help sway the vote in their favor? And how about “KETTLE BLACK” and “YELLOW HOOK GRILLE” making the trek all the way north from Bay Ridge to “THROW THEIR WING IN THE RING” with the best of them! They’ll certainly be ready!

Needless to say, make sure you save the date, people, as last year’s event had lines out the door all afternoon, with nearly 700 participants. Not only that, we’ll have a variety of local brews on hand to help you wash down your wings.

Once again, it’s free wings all day, from 2:00 pm onward, and this year’s event will also serve as a fundraiser for the terrific folks at the FOOD BANK FOR NYC.

  8. Quickie: Dutch Dairy Finally Becomes Something… Else

    January 17, 2011 by Justine

Coming home from my friends this afternoon I passed by the old Dutch Dairy (762 Manhattan Avenue) and finally saw some life in the store. I mean, that space has been closed under scaffolding for as long as I can remember.

I had my hands full and couldn’t snap a pic but it was a well lit shop with lots and lots of aisles of bright white shelving. Looked like either a book store or even more so like a video game store. Update 1/18/11 at 2:45pm: Got an email from reader Nadine who heard it’s going to be a GNC.

Hmmm, they have GNC’s in both Rite Aid locations on the avenue so maybe they’re looking to have a stand alone store. From what I saw, a GNC certainly fits the layout with the shelves.
Any further tips or pics - shoot me an email at greenpointers@gmail.com.

  9. Usha Veda Yoga Workshops

    January 15, 2011 by Christina

Greenpoint’s Usha Veda Yoga is hosting a couple workshops this month. Studio owner Christina Mattus welcomes anyone interested in yoga and their well-being to attend. Please pre-register for the Herbs class as materials must be provided.

Yoga Nidra Meditation: Sunday January 15 (Tomorrow), 4:30 – 5:30 pm

Yoga Nidra means Yogic Sleep. In Meditation, you remain in the Waking state of consciousness, and gently focus the mind, while allowing thought patterns, emotions, sensations, and images to arise and go on. However, in Yoga Nidra, you leave the Waking state, go past the Dreaming state, and go to Deep Sleep, yet remain awake. Yoga Nidra has been known for thousands of years by the sages and yogis. As a state of conscious Deep Sleep, Yoga Nidra is a universal principle, and is not the exclusive domain of any more recent teachers or traditions. Yoga Nidra brings an incredible calmness, quietness and clarity. Yoga Nidra is one of the deepest of all meditations, leading awareness through many levels of mental process to a state of supreme stillness and insight. With Ben Brown. $15, not included in membership.

  10. Caribou Baby

    January 14, 2011 by Justine

Coming soon to Driggs Avenue will be a baby store and class space for families. Caribou Baby is expected to open early this year.

I’m Adriane Stare and I’m opening a baby store and class space for expectant and new families in Greenpoint, Brooklyn!

Caribou Baby finally signed a lease last week on a beautiful, old storefront at 272 Driggs Avenue, a block and half from the McCarren Park Playground.

Paper is up in the windows, walls have been erected, it’s all happening! Stay tuned for updates as the store comes together and details on the grand opening slated for early 2011.
