  2. Berry Park Christkindlmarkt

    by Justine

Reader Adina emailed me about the Berry Park Christkindlmarkt this Sunday and well, it just made my Sunday Funday better than usual.

Berry Park Christkindlmarkt is a holiday market that will have lots of handmade crafts, booze, and a Santa! I mean, you can’t go wrong with that combination, right? Agreed! Facebook event here.

  3. McGolrick Holiday Tree Stand

    by Justine

If you need any more reminder on this last day of November, December is right around the corner! Time to start thinking about holiday decorating! Tree stands have started to assemble around McCarren park, but luckily this 2010 holiday season those of us who reside near McGolrick are in for a treat!

Fellow Greenpoint resident Charlie Poekel has opened a Christmas tree stand right off N. Henry and Nassau, open 24/7 until Christmas (all employees are residents of Greenpoint as well). The stand sells Balsam , Fraser, and Douglas Firs as well as the almighty Blue Spruce. Not to be missed are the wreaths (dressed or undressed), garland, lights, and tree stands. They also plan to make bi-weekly deliveries to the North Brooklyn area (Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Bushwick). As this is the first year I decided to have a tree in my apartment, I am really excited about this stand. The fact that it is so Greenpoint-centric just makes the deal sweeter. I have included below the Facebook event link if you would like any more information on the stand as well as Charlie’s twitter, which gives stand updates (and possibly pleas for hot cocoa).

  5. Greenpoint Shul Hanukkah Events

    by Justine

Hanukkah starts at sunset on Wednesday, so for our Jewish friends we’re posting a couple of the programs that the Greenpoint Shul is running. The Greenpoint Shul is an Orthodox synagogue that serves the entire Jewish community in Greenpoint. All are free, donations are gladly accepted.

Friday, December 3 (7:00 pm): Wine Tasting and Pairing, in conjunction with Roebling Liquors Inc. Donations gladly accepted.

Sunday, December 5 (3:00 pm): Chanukah Cooking Class – Learn to make everything Deep Fried! Including Latkas and Donuts.

Sunday, December 5 (4:30 pm): Annual Chanukah Party – featuring arts ‘n crafts for kids, competitive driedel, clothing drive, and a look at energy issues in Israel, etc. In conjunction with the Green Zionist Alliance.

Not sure if you’re aware – in addition to their regular programs, the Congregation Ahavas Israel is also raising funds in order to save the shul building from its next door neighbor – the Reform Temple (which stopped services years ago) has been condemned and could potentially collapse on the current shul, though I gather the greater danger is that the City will demolish the entire Temple and leave the remaining Congregation with the bill. The Congregation Ahavas Israel plans to keep the facade (in accordance with Landmarks guidance) and restore the basement, and build a green roof over the basement – a complement to the garden currently behind the Temple.

There’s a video on YouTube that explains the situation with the Reform Temple and the shul: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I402dJEJoBY

Thanks to Brian of bksouthie.com and reader Samara for the heads up.

  8. Greenpoint Gift Guide: Steve Keene

    by Justine

This Greenpoint Gift Guide suggestion comes directly from a local shopper. Julianne recommends artist Steve Keene’s rock and roll paintings – responsible for Pavement’s Wowee Zowee cover! After checking out Steve’s website, I have to admit I would *love* one of his pieces as a gift and I bet I’m not the only one.

From his web site: Steve says, “I want buying my paintings to be like buying a CD: it’s cheap, it’s art and it changes your life, but the object has no status. Musicians create something for the moment, something with no boundaries and that kind of expansiveness is what I want to come across in my work.” In the past few years, he has collaborated with the Silver Jews, Pavement, The Apples in Stereo, Soul Coughing, Dave Matthews Band and Merzbow to create album art, video sets, stage sets and posters. Currently Steve sold more than 140,000 paintings.

  9. Greenpoint Gift Guide: Pentatonic Music

    November 29, 2010 by Justine

Our friendly neighborhood music shop Pentatonic has some really great gift ideas for the musician (or aspiring!) in your life.

A bargain at just $25 is The Smokey Amp. It’s the world’s smallest and least expensive guitar amplifier, proudly made in the USA. It is also the single biggest selling guitar amplifier ever made! The Smokey Amp will power any speaker cabinet even a 4X12, and can even be used on the input of another amp as a fuzz box. It is available in three different styles – a real recycled cigarette pack (brands vary), a translucent polycarbonate box, or the custom artist series (Vince Ray shown). Nine volt battery included.

For a really special someone, look into made to order custom guitars by Pentatonic’s on-site luthier Domingos Fialho. Pictured instrument is the Drone Guitar, which has an electronically activated acoustic chamber which resonates the harp’s fretboard creating a unique sustain sound. Call Pentatonic at 347-599-2576 or visit pentatonicmusic.com for more info on custom pricing.
