YMCA Online Auction: Donor Requests

As many of you know I work for the YMCA of Greater New York and I support the cause of the Strong Kids campaign. In December, my branch of the Y, McBurney is holding our annual online auction to benefit the Strong Kids Campaign. I sent an email out to many of my contacts and friends that I’ve made over the years through the creation of Greenpointers. And I was really touched by the donations made to our event by some of the wonderful local businesses I frequent and support.

So far I’ve received donations ranging from gift certificates to free produce from:

S.L.A.M. (STREB LABORATORY for ACTION MECHANICS)

Fanaberie

Cato’s Army and Navy

GrowNYC Greenpoint Greenmarket

2K Play

Anella Restaurant

The Gym Park

I’m thrilled and very thankful to these businesses for helping out. This is a wonderful chance for Greenpoint businesses to reach outside of the neighborhood to a whole new audience.

We’re looking for gift certificates, experiences, new items, services, etc. It can be from the company you work for or one you frequent or from a relative or friend. The YMCA is a non-profit organization and we will provide your company with the necessary form and tax deductible paperwork for their files.

Seriously, take a minute to visit the website – and look at all the amazing businesses that have donated in the past! This is a fantastic way to get the word out about your business. This is a yearly event that attracts a pretty decent clientele.

Forward it to your boss, your mom and your friends. The possibilities are endless for donations. If you’re a chef, offer your services to create a meal for a winning bidder. If you work at retail shop or restaurant, a gift card or certificate would be awesome. If your company makes products put together a basket full of your items. Tickets to concerts, events, and so on, and so on.

I will also be eternally grateful to those who donate!

Franklin St Regulars Part I

One of my favorite Greenpointers, Emily Raw, is having a showcase of her portrait series this Tuesday at Kill Devil Hill. I shall be there with bells on to support my girlie and her fabulous work. You should, too. Facebook event here.

Cultural locavore & photographer Emily Raw shoots artists in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Her ongoing portrait series “Franklin St Regulars” celebrates key contributors to Greenpoint’s current Franklin St renaissance.

Part One showcases Mary Brockman of Kill Devil Hill (170 Franklin St) & Stephanie Anderson of WORD (126 Franklin St).

The photographs, on display at Kill Devil Hill’s backroom salon from 26 October – 17 November 2010, depict sets and costumes hand-built from paper for a flattening effect that’s the inverse of trompe l’oeil.

The promotional images are teasers & will not appear in the actual show. The final product can be seen only at Kill Devil Hill. A portion of each paper set will be available at the opening for attendee photo ops.

Join fellow foodies on Sunday, October 24th for Enid’s 8th Annual Apple Pie Bake-Off. Dust off your rolling pins, call your grandmother for her top secret recipe, tie on your apron and start testing out different apple varieties.

We will be entering the first 50 pies received between 6 & 7 pm. No early birds, please. The winning categories are 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, Prettiest Pie, and Most Creative! Sweet prizes, such as a $100 gift certificate to Enid’s, cool stuff from the Brooklyn Kitchen, All Hands on Deck, keepsake medals and rad bragging rights. After the judging, the top pies will be announced, prizes awarded, followed by a homemade pie free-for-all.

The 2010 panel of judges:

Einat Imber and Erin Diebboll live in Brooklyn where they cook together and share their meals. They are both artists, Einat works in 3 dimensions and Erin in 2. They are also the hands behind All Hands On Deck (.biz) where you can find one of a kind sweaters and color-in t-shirts. In their spare time they attend pie socials.

Karol Lu has participated in the Enid’s Apple Pie Bake-Off for the past 3 years and won 3rd place and “prettiest pie” in 2007 and 2nd place in 2008. Besides cooking and baking, Karol coordinates a CSA site in Williamsburg, hosts various food-related events, and is an avid pool player.

Co-owner of the Brooklyn Kitchen and the Meat Hook, Harry Rosenblum has been baking pies since age 12. He is a master of the short crust, and has been known to make a pie in whatever pan is available even square (who knew there were no round pans in Ukraine) His preference leans towards fruit pies, with pecan a close second, and he’s been known to make a chess pie now again.

Matt Tilden from Scratchbread.

Michael Harlan Turkell, a once aspiring chef, now freelance photographer and a photo editor of Edible Brooklyn and Edible Manhattan magazines, captures the inner workings of kitchens for his award-winning “BACK OF THE HOUSE” project, which documents the lives of chefs in their restaurant world.
