  3. Letters: Proposed Homeless Shelter

    August 30, 2010 by Justine

Got a letter from a reader regarding a proposed homeless shelter planned for Greenpoint. Not good news.

    Hello!

Life long greenpointer here :) Just thought I would let you know of a project planned for Greenpoint that concerns me and that you may want to place on your blog.

A four story, 200 bed homeless shelter, is planned for a building on McGuiness and Clay Street. I remember the days of bums all over Greenpoint and we’ve come a very long way since! There are currently artists and musicians living in the building – they would be evicted should this plan go through. Let the fellow Greenpointers on your blog know! Even if you support it – the plan should be made known to the residents regardless and I figured your blog would be a good way to do it.

    Thank you!

I looked into and it appears that this is indeed something being planned.

A 200-bed homeless men’s shelter run by Andrew Cuomo’s sister could be coming to Greenpoint — and residents are alarmed.

The New York-based nonprofit HELP USA, one of the country’s largest builders and operators of transitional and permanent low-income housing, is moving towards building one of the largest shelters in North Brooklyn in a four-story industrial building on McGuiness Boulevard at Clay Street.

I’m definitly AGAINST this. The area where this is proposed is already desolate and just in the infancy of being inhabited by people. Young pretty hipsters and their shiny gadgets will be prime targets for these people. For every one down on their luck person put in a bad situation there are hundreds of criminals and drug addicts in the homeless shelter population. This is a BAD fucking idea.

Let them know what a bad idea it is at the next CB1 Board Meeting.

UPDATE 9/1/10: Some additional information in a letter dated August 10th to Community Board 1. It indicates that they are proposing a MEN’S Assessment Center for 200 adults. It does note that there will be “extensive security” but the idea of having 200 homeless MEN in our neighborhood does not sit well with me safety wise.

  4. Whiskey Sour Pickles

    by Justine

Back in the day me and my cousin would get pickles in a barrell at the fruit stand around the corner for $1 each and just sit on the stoop. The thought of two little girls eating pickles on the front stoop might seem a little perverse now, but I digress. The point is, I like pickles.

If you like pickles, check out tomorrow’s Old Time Drink Night at Kill Devil Hill where Brooklyn Brine (who I can attest have some mighty delicious pickles) will be unveiling their latest creation – The Whiskey Sour Pickle. Made with McKenzie Rye Whiskey from Fingerlakes Distillery here in New York state, Brooklyn Brine certainly knows how to keep it local.

Kill Devil Hill is accepting pre-orders on a jar (or two) of pickles as they are going to go fast, so stop in and get yours.

  7. Sunday Snaps: Critters

    August 29, 2010 by Justine

Sunday Snaps took an unintentional hiatus for most of the summer, but a quick look at the Greenpointers Flickr Pool shows some really amazing shots in the hood have been added.

  8. Brooklyn Heights Cinema

    August 27, 2010 by Justine

I normally do not post stuff outside the realm of Greenpoint or nearby Williamsburg but we all make field trips. :)

    Hi there!

I am a manager and assistant booker over at Brooklyn Heights Cinema, located at 70 Henry St. under the Brooklyn Bridge. We are a small team here that has been in business for a little over 5 years now.

I have wanted to reach out to several blogs around the Brooklyn communities to share with them what we are about, and the sort of films we play. We are a 2 theater art house style cinema, and bring in films we love to see and think others like us would. I work for the owner and main manager, Amy Mascena, and we book our own films here as well, something we take a great pride in.

    Thank you kindly!
Anya and Amy in the Heights

Brooklyn Heights Cinema is offering a special to Greenpointers readers – Get tickets for any show, any time, any day for just $6.50! All you need to do is mention Greenpointers blog.

  10. Greenpoint Greenmarket Update: 8/28/10

    by Justine

Karen Seiger, author of “Markets of New York City” (http://www.marketsofnewyork.com/) – a guidebook for artisan, farmer, food, and flea markets in the city – will be signing books at the market on Saturday. Seiger featured the Greenpoint/McCarren Park Greenmarket in her book, so she knows all about the market!

Come to the market information tent around 10:30am to get your signed copy and to ask her about her book. And remember, you can use your EBT (food stamps), Debit, and Credit cards in the market.
