  1. Greenpoint Artists’ Studio Walking Tour this Sunday

    April 29, 2010 by Joann

    ** Update**
Tours are originally $75 per person (to pay artists and creators) but if you mention Greenpointers you’ll get $25 off! Huzzah!

InContext Tours will be guiding folks to a handful of awesome artists working in Greenpoint including two of my favorite artists in the world: Amanda Browder and Emily Noelle Lambert. I should also mention Amanda’s current project Future Phenomena, in collaboration with North Brooklyn Public Art Coalition, involves sewing gigantic swaths of fabric to eventually blanket an entire building on Manhattan Ave. She is hosting a one day sewing extravaganza at The Trinity Project on Saturday and can use your help cutting, sewing, chatting, drinking coffee and supporting. Emily was one of the first artists I met in this neighborhood and profiled for Greenpointers. This lady has some amazing paintings up her sleeve and I would not miss either of these studios during your beautiful weekend studio tour. Full details below:

Please join us for our upcoming artists’ studio walking tour in Greenpoint Brooklyn. We will take you into each artist’s studio where they will talk about their work and why they make it. You will be seeing new art works being created and also finished pieces. This is an insider’s opportunity to get a better understanding of the creative process and the inspiration behind the work, with different artists working in diverse manners.

InContext’s Greenpoint Tour will be on Sunday, May 2nd, with an option to meet at Union Square – in front of the Gandhi statue (south-west corner of the square) at 2pm or at the Greenpoint Avenue stop on the G train 2:30pm.

We will take you to artists:

    Justine,

Thanks again for posting our call for artists last month for the Greenpoint 100 art exhibition and auction on May 1st. We’ve received many pieces so far, but we’d love to get more. And more importantly, we want to make sure the community will come out to support the library and see these works (and maybe even take some home with them).

  7. Brooklyn Brine

    April 27, 2010 by Christina

Most residents of Greenpoint, Brooklyn are sleeping while Shamus Jones and his Brooklyn Brine crew make pickles at the popular restaurant Brooklyn Label, during its off hours.
Because of their nocturnal pickling schedule, Shamus tells me he’s running on just a couple hours of sleep. The year-old company has been blowing up in popularity, signing more accounts than ever, including a brand new one with Whole Foods, and Esquire Magazine has just declared their pickles “the best”.
Despite the success of their coveted savory treats, Brooklyn Brine owner Shamus stays humble and acknowledges that the friends and relationships he’s built in the food industry over the years are imperative to his business. He speaks highly of Brooklyn Label’s generosity as well as Urban Rustic and Marlow & Daughters, for being the first to sell Brooklyn Brine products in their restaurants.
Brooklyn Brine uses only produce from local farms, farms Shamus has been dealing with since his days as a chef, and I urge you to get out there and try some of their offerings that change with the seasons. The newest items on the menu for summer include lavender asparagus, ramps, garlic scapes, eggplant, orange and saffron pepper relish, fiddlehead ferns, and sunchokes.
Brooklyn Brine prides itself on being a company that people can feel good about being a part of. They also want you to know where your pickles come from, even what music they’ve been jarred to. Check out their blog for playlists and pickle news here and a list of their vendors here.

  8. Newtown Creek Visitor Center Opens

    April 26, 2010 by Kea

The Newtown Creek Visitor Center opened this weekend!  People interested in our waste water treatment plant or any NYC water issues will be able to find information on a range of topics concerning our city’s  water system.  The Department of Environmental Protection along with our community have been working on this project for quite some time and its opening marks a major step forward for Newtown Creek’s $5 billion reconstruction.  The center also displays artwork from varying artists including a sculpture by Vito Acconi.  His work has been commissioned through The Percent for Art Program which subsidizes artists to create ‘site-specific’ artwork.

The center is open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays from noon – 4pm.  You can also schedule a tour by contacting the DEP at educationoffice@dep.nyc.gov, or by phone at 718-595-3506.
