  2. Neighborhood Questions: McCarren Park Clean-Up?

    by Justine

I got this email from Dan regarding the trash scene at McCarren Park. Does anyone know of an in progress clean-up program or are interested in creating one? Feel free to leave your info in the comments or email me directly at greenpointers@gmail.com and I’ll put you in touch with Dan.

I am a relatively new Greenpoint resident and wanted to see if you had any idea how I could get a clean up going in McCarren Park and down Driggs Avenue in Greenpoint/Williamsburg? I actually proposed a lecture on the Monday Night Lecture Series at Pete’s Candy Store but they turned me down.

I would like to weigh in on Williamsburg/Greenpoint Trash – why McCarren Park and Driggs and Bedford Avenues are so full of trash and why the municipalities are essentially ignoring the trash buildup that occurs, despite the growing population and influx of both homes and people into these areas. I am a Greenpoint resident and live not far from Pete’s. I walk Driggs at least twice daily and see the trash buildup and lack of receptacles. I walk my dog in McCarren Park and fight with her as she eats chicken bones, random paper, broken umbrella’s, lost shoes, etc. It would just seem to me that this would be a fairly easy problem to fix – more garbage cans, maybe more frequent pick-ups, etc. but I have heard no complaints or mention of this and have seen no improvement in the time I have lived there.

Any thoughts/assistance you might have would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Dan

Update 7/2/10: Hi this is Emily Mijatovic from Assemblyman Lentol’s office. Just to update you all, the Assemblyman has contacted the Parks Department and has been told that they have hired 3 workers to McCarren Park, and two extra for the summer to work weekend/late nights. In addition, a Parks Enforcement Patrol Officer will be hired for the district.

  5. River Barrel Goes Korean

    March 30, 2010 by Justine

Rumor has it River Barrel is changing names and has already changed their cuisine to a Korean spin.

River Barrel in Greenpoint is totally different (and AMAZING) now (Korean)…think it’s re-naming soon

“totally different menu, totally different kitchen and chef. we went there last week and were highly impressed with the food we got: Korean fried chicken, “Korean hot dog” (housemade lemongrass pork sausage with housemade kimchee and hot sauce on a roll), great Brussels sprouts with denjang, boquerones and wasabi greens crostini…

I live a few blocks away and am excited to see what happens when it re-opens with a new name/look (soon, I hear). for now, they ARE running the new menu, and it’s delicious.”

  6. 2010 Northside Festival – June 24th-27th

    by Justine

The 2nd annual Northside Festival has been announced for this Summer! Mark your calendars for June 24th through the 27th.
Now that the weather is warming up, it’s full steam ahead until summer: Perfect timing to announce the second annual Northside Festival — four days of music, art, film and a few too many tacos from a truck on Bedford — taking place June 24-27 in Williamsburg and Greenpoint.

While us here at The L Magazine are booking a share of the shows on our own, Northside is, at its heart, a collaborative event. We’ve once again handed over curatorial control to some of the most tasteful, talented and dedicated folks in New York’s independent music scene — record labels, bloggers, promoters and more — allowing them to showcase the bands they think you need to hear and spotlight the community of artists that call New York home.

The Williamsburg Gallery Association is again on board to highlight special exhibitions and other events at over 25 art galleries in the neighborhood. For Northside’s second year, we’ve invited a few of our favorite aficionados of independent film to curate four nights of New York-made movies at Brooklyn’s new, as yet unopened film house/music club/restaurant bar, indieScreen. And with Heineken and Southern Comfort sponsoring this year’s festivities, you better believe there will be lots of drink specials throughout the weekend.

In the coming months we’ll be rolling out a long list of showcase presenters, gallery events, film screenings and, of course, bands; keep an eye on northsidefestival.com for the latest.

  7. New Kitchen Hours at The Richardson

    by Justine

The Richardson debuts new kitchen hours starting TODAY! They’ve also teamed up with The Blue Stove so now you can pre-order sweets for events.

After much discussion & deliberation, we have exciting news at The Richardson – New Kitchen Hours! Beginning today, our kitchen will now be serving food EVERYday, nonstop, from 12Noon – 2am.

Now, not only are we one of the very few places to grab an afternoon drink on Graham Avenue, but we are also one of the few places to grab a bite, as well!

At the moment, our menu will remain the same as it has been for the past few months, but with the addition of a few fancy new kitchen tools. Be on the lookout for a revamped food menu coming this Spring. With Summer right around the corner (and a small taste of the outdoor patio the other week), we are very excited to be able to offer food EVERY afternoon.

Also of note, our new Hand-picked Single Barrel Buffalo Trace should be arriving sometime later this week. Swing by for a taste of Barrel #2)

As always, thanks so much for your continued support. Hope to see you sometime soon, in the afternoon, for cocktails as well as a bite to eat!
