Just in case you’re looking to buy your special someone something truly made with love this weekend, come watch these videos about the hard work that goes into making local food that matters.
As seen in our post yesterday, Kumquat Cupcakery and Liddabit Sweets start their Valentine’s Day Pop-Up Sweet Shop at Kill Devil Hill today through Sunday on Franklin Avenue. These are sweets made from scratch that’ll impress just about anyone. And better yet, you can help support local food artisans here in Greenpoint/Williamsburg.
Hey all. So I guess I can consider this my first post here on Greenpointers besides my introduction I posted a few weeks ago. So what to post, what to post. Hey, did anyone hear something about a snowstorm today? I was hearing chirpings of this and decided to take the camera out and investigate.
Sure enough, I opened the door and noticed I would have to dig my way out. After an hours time and a shovel, I managed to dig a tunnel just big enough to get me and my dog Brooklyn out. I walked around a bit to enjoy the wintery wonderland Greenpoint was for the day. I could go on and on but the point of my post is to share some of the images of the day. I struggled to shoot as the snow beat down on my camera so please excuse me if they are not up to par. Keep in mind, I am still learning and you know what they say. Practice makes perfect.
Just a quick note, I applaud the many property owners who came out and actually shoveled their sidewalk making walking both easier and safer for all of us. Great job Greenpoint.

Are you a connoisseur of buffalo wings? Well if so, you are in for a treat this weekend with The Best Wings in Brooklyn competition cook-off co-sponsored by Brooklyn Based and 3V PR & Management and hosted right here in Greenpoint by Red Star. And you get to wash it all down with Brooklyn Brewery beers on tap. It’s like a dream come true! Facebook event here.
17 of the best bars and culinary establishments, from all over the Borough, notorious for their wings are set to cook-off at 3PM on Saturday, February 13, 2010.
Brooklyn journalists and culinary editors, Nick D’Arienzo of the BROOKLYN STAR-QUEENS LEDGER Newspaper Group, Gersh Kuntzman, Editor, THE BROOKLYN PAPER and Annaliese Griffin, Senior Editor, Brooklyn Based will put their expert taste buds to the test and select the Best Wing in Brooklyn!
Based on the judge’s scores and the scores of the community (yes, the public has a say too), Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will hand out awards for the Best Wing in Brooklyn, 2 Best Wing Runners-up, and a People’s Choice Award.
And what’s a Brooklyn wing competition without the best beer in Brooklyn? Brooklyn Brewery will be featuring 6 of their finest beers on tap, including Brooklyn Lager, Winter Ale, East India Pale Ale, and their Brewmaster Reserves, Blast, Back Breaker and Cookie Jar Porter, a new addition to the Brewmaster roster.
This event will be a showcase of what Brooklyn’s culinary scene has to offer. So bring your boxing gloves, get in the ring and fight for your favorite wing!
Best Wings in Brooklyn Competition Participants:
Atomic Wings, Carroll Gardens Bean Post Pub, Bay Ridge Buffalo Cantina, Williamsburg Canteena, Bay Ridge Jake’s Bar-B-Que, Carroll Gardens Kettle Black Bar and Restaurant, Bay Ridge Magnolia Restaurant and Bar, Park Slope Red Star, Greenpoint Rocky Sullivan’s, Red Hook SarahJames, Bedford Stuyvesant Spike Hill, Williamsburg Sugarcane, Park Slope Super Wings NY, Crown Heights Teddy’s Bar and Grill, Williamsburg Wheeler’s, Sheepshead Bay Wing Wagon, Flatbush Yellow Hook Grille, Bay Ridge
Personally, I think Red Star has it in the bag. Home field advantage and their wings are fantastic!
A little over a year ago, the Greenpoint Business Association was formed and Gina from local Zaya’s Appliances gave me all the deets on a holiday promotion they were running from several businesses in the area. Since then I hadn’t heard much more but this morning I received an email from the coordinator, Jennifer Hilton and they are really ramping up the effort.
They are having a special Valentine’s Day promotion with three local favorites that just screams perfect date!
Dear Justine,
I wanted to give you an update on some new initiatives by the Greenpoint Business Association. Gina at Zaya Appliances, Rich Mazur of North Brooklyn Development Corporation, John Tapper from the Garden and Jack Bakowski are working diligently on revitalizing the Greenpoint Business Association with the support of the Department of Small Business Services in NYC. I am working as a consultant with them at this time surveying the businesses in the community – including Manhattan Avenue, Franklin and Nassau. It is a lot of territory but proving to be a great benefit to understand the needs of the Greenpoint Business community.
We have supported three businesses for a promotion this weekend and I was hoping you would highlight it on your blog….
I look forward to our speaking soon…oh such sad, sad news about the Greenpoint Coffee House closing!
Very best,
Jennifer Hilton – Coordinator Greenpoint Business Association 718-389-9044 ext 15 917-803-8921
Greenpoint Businesses Joining Forces to Bring Consumers to the “Point”
The newly revitalized Greenpoint Business Association is working with local businesses to develop ways of bringing a stronger sense of commerce to the Greenpoint community.
All too often Greenpoint is looked on as an arms length extension of Williamsburg Brooklyn, almost a secondary spot of commerce, instead of a primary destination. The newly revitalized Greenpoint Business Association is working with neighborhood businesses to change that.
Over the Valentine Day weekend three Greenpoint businesses are joining forces and offering incentives to shop and eat locally. Dandelion Wine, known for their Friday night wine tasting soiree, is teaming up with fredflare – the “cutest” store in Greenpoint and Eat restaurant – delicious fresh and local food, with a triangle promotion. Attend the Dandelion Wine Friday tasting or shop and buy wine over the weekend and with select offerings you will receive a 25% gift card for fredflare. Also, when you bring your wine purchase and receipt over to Eat restaurant – they have a BYO policy, you can get an additional 10% off on your meal.
This campaign is a demonstration of the collective marketing the Greenpoint Business Association is supporting as well as addressing additional ways of improving commerce in the community.
The Valentine weekend promotion between Dandelion Wine, fredflare and Eat will run from Friday February 12 – 14, 2010. So come out to Greenpoint have a Dandy celebration, buy the “cutest” stuff and Eat well.
Dandelion Wine 153 Franklin Street Friday Wine Tastings 6 – 9 Mon – Fri 2 – 11 Sat 12 – 11 Sun 12 – 9
fredflare… stay CUTE! 131 Meserole Ave Mon – Sat 11 – 7 Sun 11 – 5
EAT 124 Meserole Ave Wednesday through Sunday 10 – 10 Regional and Seasonal Farm Fare BYO Dandelion Wine!

The Greenpoint Coffee House is officially closing…in two days.
Dear Greenpoint,
After seven short years, the Greenpoint Coffee House will meet its maker this Monday, February 8th, at approximately 5pm.
The hours for our final two days of service:
Sunday – 10 to 5:30, kitchen open from 10:30 to 5 Monday – 8 to 4:30, kitchen open from 8 to 4
False rumors of the GPCH’s demise have regularly swept through the quiet alleys of west Greenpoint. One rumor would not die, that our lease was denied renewal by the building’s landlord. While we hoped to remain in business until the end of March, it became unadvisable, if not impossible, given the normal difficulties of operation mixed with the added turbulence of unwinding such an establishment. And suddenly, here we are.
A true community has called the corner of Franklin and Green “home.” For this group, including owners Louise and Brian, the many staff members past and present, and our beloved regulars throughout the years, this is a lamentable moment. An era will end on Monday and memories of the Greenpoint Coffee House will live on, on their own anomalous terms.
Sorry for the immediacy of it all. We hope those who wish to say goodbye will have the chance to enter the space one last time, ready to celebrate whatever the place has meant to them. An official party of some kind will (hopefully) be planned, so stay tuned.
