  1. Van Leeuwen Ice Cream opens shop TODAY!

    February 27, 2010 by Joann

Laura, Ben and Pete of Van Leeuwen Ice Cream are celebrating the opening of their shop today from 2 – 6pm. The Ice Cream store is located adjacent to Manhattan Inn and will serve their signature blend of mind blowing flavors as well as coffee from Intelligentsia and and an array of delicious sweets. I can’t tell you enough how excited I am about this, Laura is a fellow Greenpointer, a member of the Greenpoint Girls Group and super kickass in ping pong and silly dancing. VLAIC shop will be most certainly be the old school new school ice cream parlour for the masses.

Meanwhile, Miss Annie Novak of Rooftop Farms and Growing Chefs is throwing a fundraiser tonight at Urban Rustic, from 7pm to midnight. It’s a collaboration between Annie, yours truly, Cody of the Standard, and Luis of Urban Rustic. There will be drinks, food, music, and lots of auction items. Books, classes, kombucha, chocolate, kimchi, jam, you name it, we’re live auctioning it. Tickets are $40 and all the money you spend at the event goes to Growing Chefs which is an amazing organization that connects children from the farm to the kitchen. Annie prepares dozens of classes between Rooftop Farms and Botanic Garden giving students an opportunity to get their hands dirty and taste what they’ve sown directly from soil to their mouths. Come show your support and have some fun while you’re at it!

  2. Vacationnnnnn!

    February 25, 2010 by Justine

I’ve been on vacation since last Weednesday and planned to be back tomorrow but since my flight got delayed today and then it looks like delays will be plaguing airline travel tomorrow, I’ve decided to extend my trip and return on Sunday.

Some of the other Greenpointers may pop in for a post or two, but I’ll be back sometime next week with regular posts. Try not to miss me too much. ;)

  6. Work It Brooklyn

    Work It Brooklyn
    February 24th
    7 – 10pm
    Arsenal
    170 N4th btw Bedford & Driggs Ave
    Free
Calling all freelance creative workers of Brooklyn!
Join us on February 24th for Work It Brooklyn, a networking event formed to connect inspired creatives working independently within the creative fields. Graphic designers, dancers, musicians, tech gurus, painters, and others are welcomed in this evening of productive debauchery. WIB is devised as a forum to connect folks working from home without the benefit of a network support system, opening up the opportunity to meet and forge partnerships, fine and create work, instigate healthy competition, and encourage the exchange of ideas and potential collaborations, all the while having a whole lot of fun.
It is no understatement that North Brooklyn is bustling with new initiatives at every turn, in food (Greenpoint Food Market, The Meathook, CSA’s, Rooftop Farms), green ambitions (North Brooklyn Compost Project, additional Green Markets), art (3rd Ward, North Brooklyn Public Art Coalition), community and social issues (Williamsburg Walks, Northside Town Hall), and sports (North Brooklyn Runners, McCarren Tennis). WIB is an effort to connect the residents of this region, individuals already filled to the brim with activity, bringing them together for an evening of conversation and partnership.
The evening will be held in two parts. The Arsenal will be divided into six field-related stations, providing a hub for folks to gather within and outside their primary concentration. At the center of the space there will be Speed Networking. Think musical chairs meets speed dating, where attendees get to meet and speak through this spunky and time sensitive activity. We will also be raffling off tickets for a chance to win prizes provided by our proud sponsors, local businesses and organizations that believe that WIB rocks as much as we do.
There will also be a projection screen with a presentation of any attendants who wish to submit a page with a portfolio sample and contacts. That way if someone likes what they see in what you do on this screen, they can contact you once the evening is over, or serendipitously meet during the event and start what could be a beautiful collaboration between creative minds. Read the instructions attached and check out our blog for details on submitting templates for the presentation, due Feb 19th.
This is a free event and pre-registration via eventbrite is required. Registration closes Feb 19th or whenever we reach 100 attendees.
Work It Brooklyn is produced by Aja Marsh (North Brooklyn Runners), Briana Campbell (Unemployed Brooklyn) and Joann Kim (Greenpoint Food Market). For full details and schedule for the evening, check out workitbrooklyn.wordpress.com
Please feel free to contact us at workitbrooklyn@gmail.com

Work It Brooklyn is proudly sponsored by Brooklyn Based, The Arsenal, The Skint and Ladies Who Launch. Raffles graciously donated by Kombucha Brooklyn, WORD, Brooklyn Brewery, Ladies Who Launch, and more to come!

First there was a blizzard that wasn’t… then there was the blizzard that (kinda) was. Here’s some pics from last weeks blizzard-y goodness.

  9. Beer Tasting at Brouwerij Lane

    February 11, 2010 by Justine

Mmmmm Brouwerij Lane beer tasting. Reserve your spot now beer lovers!

Join us the weekend of February 19th, 20th and 21st for our first official in-store tasting. Our focus will be on American Style Barleywines and we’ll have 10 cask and draught examples to quaff. We’ll start with the maltiest and work our way through to the hoppiest, discuss the style and the specific characteristics of each beer. Be sure to get a good meal in beforehand, because these beers pack a punch.

    Ladies and Gents,

To help you thaw out this weekend we’ve got some great beers on draught for in-store half pints and pints as well as 32 oz and 64 oz growlers to go:

    * From Victory Brewing out of Downingtown, PA we have their new single hop variety series called Pursuit Pale ale. This first edition pale ale is brewed with 100% American Nugget hops, which impart a pungent, resinous quality. This beer allows you to experience the subtle characteristics that just one hop variety can add.

    * Also from Victory, we have a keg of their Scarlet Fire Rauchbier which is brewed using malts kilned over an open beechwood fire. If you’ve never experienced rauchbier before, this is a great beginner’s rauch. Malty and light with a complex smokey finish.

    * To celebrate local favorite Sixpoint’s Fifth Anniversary, we have a few barrels of Double Sweet Action. If you enjoy Sixpoint’s flagship Sweet Action then now you can try the double strength version. I suspect this beer will move quickly, so get it while you can.

    * Back by popular demand we have the new Brewmaster beer from Brooklyn Brewery titled Cookie Jar Porter. Brewed with whole golden oats, raisins, vanilla bean and honey, this beer appeals to the oatmeal cookie lover. Though it sounds very sweet and dessert-like, this porter actually finishes quite dry with an interesting cookie-ish quality. The perfect way to cap off a valentines night.

    * For those hop fans we have two hoppy beers from Green Flash Brewing. West Coast IPA is an aggressively bitter, floral and citrusy example of southern California brewing. If you need a little more kick, we’re also pouring their Imperial IPA, which clocks in at a hefty 9.4%

    * And if strong beer is your thing, than we’re pouring Smuttynose Wheat Wine as a prequel to our Barleywine Tasting next weekend. This beer shares many of the sweet, malty characteristics of traditional barleywine, only with a large wheat component.
