Yesterday was the annual Idiotarod which – not surprisingly – has become popular here in Greenpoint. Flickr member noahdevereaux has added these nice shots to the Greenpointers Group Flickr Pool.

  5. Weekend Blend: 1/28-1/31

    by Justine

Start your weekend on Thursday with Souper Trivia #2 at t.b.d. Facebook event here.

After last month’s resounding success, The Greenpoint Soup Kitchen is doing it again this Thursday with another pub quiz! This month’s proceeds will go, in full, to the benefit of The Red Cross Haiti Relief. Please come show your support and contribute to the emergency relief and recovery efforts for a people devastated by the earthquake in Haiti. $5 to participate, with ALL money going to The Red Cross.

The G is *still* on it’s bullshit shuttle bus kick this weekend so why not take a real bus ride into nearby Queens for a hot cocoa crawl? Blog Mommy Poppins gives you 5 great hot chocolate joints and a couple of them are super close, they’d be a quick ten or fifteen minute bus ride. I’ve personally been to both Sweetleaf and Aubegine Cafe and recommend both.

So the Jets aren’t in the Super Bowl, but this Sunday Jan 31st you can still dream with The Red Star Bowl – a Madden ’10 tournament. $500 for the grand prize, and other prizes will be awarded, too. Space is limited, so see your bartenders at Red Star for details and to secure your spot now. All entrants must show up 2:30 to register, and the tourney starts at 3pm. Game On!

Also this Sunday is Poker Unleashed – a fundraiser for Dog Habitat – which we mentioned a couple of weeks ago. If you didn’t RSVP then, you might be shit out of luck since half the spots were already gone the day after we posted about it. But maybe, just maybe there are a few spots left and luck is on your side. Fecebook event here.

    Texas Hold’em
$80 buyin ($60 to winnings / $20 donated to Dog Habitat)
Start with 3000 chips, blinds raise every 20 minutes, money to the Top 4
    RSVP to pokerunleashed@gmail.com
You will receive confirmation for your place in the game – seating is limited (30 person max).
Raffle with great prizes, food, drinks.

    PS 110 ESL Classes

*The flyer says classes are to start in Feburary but the email says March, I’m double checking and will update the post with the info I receive.

    Update 1/26/10:

    Hi Justine,
Thanks so much for posting the flier. We are in our recruitment phase right now and testing, and classes, will begin the first week of March.

  7. Quickie: B24 Might Get The Shaft

    by Justine

I don’t necessarily pay much attention to the MTA and all the shit they threaten to do, but I came across this article from Sunnyside Post and I’m really bummed that the B24 might be cut – on the weekends no less!

The B24 is just about the only bus I ride. I have friends along Greenpoint Avenue in Sunnyside and find myself there at least once a month. Although it runs majorly infrequently as it is – something like once every half or hour or less – it takes mere minutes to get to my friends house. And it saves me money because last time I took a cab there, Malone’s tried to rape me for $10. After I balked, it was $8. But still, it’s a little ridic.

  9. The New Kid on the Block

    January 25, 2010 by Justine

Hello there my fellow Greenpointers, both old and new. Just wanted to take a few minutes to introduce myself. My name is Dylan and I was asked to join by Justine. From time to time I will contribute some pics I take around Greenpoint, everything from events to everyday life of the neighborhood.

A little about myself. I was born and raised right here in good ol Greenpoint some 34 years ago. That’s right, I am not afraid to say my age. LOL. I have seen firsthand how Greenpoint has developed throughout my life. To look on Manhattan Avenue and see people sitting in a Starbucks only to think back to the time when I would walk through that entrance every Saturday to spend my day watching movies. Or walk up further and see the Rite Aid off between Norman and Meserole Avenue and think to the times when it was a roller rink.

While the neighborhood has changed, I have not and hopefully in time I will be able to show you Greenpoint through the eyes of one who was born and raised here so that you may appreciate and understand the gem of a neighborhood we all live in together.

To my old neighbors, thank you for supporting me on this new endeavor. To my new neighbors, I look forward to us getting to know each other in time.

Thank you to Justine for inviting me to Greenpointers Blog and thank you to each person who took the time to read my little intro about myself. Hope to bring nothing but good things to the table in the near future. Thank you all.

    Dylan
