  1. Weekend Blend: Halloween!

    October 31, 2009 by Justine

This week’s Weekend Blend is all about Halloween! Most of these items are re-posted from my Halloween in the Hood post last week but I’ve been adding to it as things come in and I’m going to keep this post on top from now until Sunday.

Got any tips for Halloween night events going on in the hood? Email me at greenpointers [at] gmail [dot] com. I’ll be adding to this post as things come in!

Kick off the Halloween weekend on Thursday at Brouwerij Lane’s Pumpkin Harvest Party from 6pm-10pm with harvest beers and pumpkin beers on tap.

There is so much to do on Saturday that maybe you need a dress rehearsal on Friday night? If so t.b.d. is hosting one! Facebook event here.

Are you torn between TWO costumes this halloween? Are you so in love with your Zombie get up that you simply can’t imagine wearing it just the one evening? Do you want a trial run to make sure that you get everything JUST RIGHT?

Well. Have we got the solution for you. Come to t.b.d. Friday evening for a-very-nearly-impromptu Halloween warm up. We will have spooky music, apple bobbing, random Halloween-themed games, and, you guessed it, drink specials.

Come on. You know you want to. If only to see Lance make some mistakes.

Friday night is also host to the Tricko Treat Party at the Warsaw. A free party with 2 live bands and a DJ. $2 shots until 10pm, $3 beers and $4 mixed drinks all night. Facebook event here.

District Dog is having their third annual doggie Halloween parade at Winthrop Park (McGolrick). Even if you don’t have a puppy of your own this is poised for a cute overload moment for sure.

The 3rd Annual Halloween Parade is set to be an event to remember. Lucky for us this year it will be held on Saturday, October 31st at 1pm in McGolrick Park.

This years theme is “Dress Your Name” so be ready for some great costumes inspired by dog names.

The Habitat always does an amazing job of decorating for the holidays and their events. And I’m sure this year Nicole and the gang will outdo themselves with the Halloween Freak Show. A costume contest with a $100 cash prize, beer and shot specials and the mayhem starts at sundown. A must hit if you’re planning on being the hood. Facebook event here.

Connie O’s is having their own Halloween party with open bar options, spooky shot specials and $100 prize for best costume! And as a bonus, the fabulous Samantha is bartending. Facebook event here.

    Halloween Party
    - 4 hours open bar for $40
    - 2 hours open bar for $25
    - test tube shots
    - halloween themed shots and music
    - syringe jello shots

Jes from Three Kings Tattoo shot me an email to tell me about their Halloween tattoo special. Nothing like tats for Halloween!

We have a complete sheet of original flash, each tattoo is only $31. We are opening at 12 noon and will remain open until 10pm. It is a first come, first served basis (we get pretty packed).

    572 Manhattan Ave
    btwn Driggs & Nassau

Red Star is having their 2nd Halloween Bash – Halloween Unrated! $40 open bar from 10pm-2am with prizes for best costume.

For the more adventurous, the Zombie Crawl is baaaaack! From Diamond Bar to Black Rabbit to t.b.d to Mark Bar. So no fear fellow Greenpointers, on Halloween night when you’re walking around thinking it’s a Resident Evil moment, it’s just a bunch of peeps trying to take advantage of the Zombie drink specials. Facebook event here.

It’s time for the Greenpoint Zombie Crawl!!
Get your fix of brainz and booze

8-9pm Zombie Cluster at Diamond Bar – 43 Franklin st

11-12am the mark bar – 1025 Manhattan ave

    Drink Specials for all Zombies!
Midnight Zombie Call at the Mark Bar

The Richardson is having their own little Halloween event in that classic style that’s all their own.

DEVILS, DECADENCE & all things GHASTLY at THE RICHARDSON this Saturday night – HALLOWEEN!

You don’t need a ‘ticket to play’ and, as always, you are welcome to ‘come as you are’…but it IS Halloween so you may feel out of place without grisly getup! We’ll be celebrating in fiendish delight this night!

Also, back by popular demand, in addition to our regular rotation of 1950′s R&B and Rock-n-Roll, we will showcase a one-night-only addition of HALLOWEEN HITS, such as MONSTER MASH, WEREWOLF WATUSI &, of course, ASTRO ZOMBIES! So get ready to dance, howl or crow to your gruesome little black heart is content.

Don’t miss out on your last chance to party on a Halloween Saturday for five years – your next chance won’t be till 2014! Got that day-timers?

We look forward to seeing you and your friends, outfitted in your garments of gloom (glee is okay too)!

New spot Blackout is having a special Halloween edition of Prowl Night with an open vodka bar from 10pm-11pm. Facebook event here.

    Prowl Night Halloween!

    Max Wowch and Runaway (DFA)

Bar Matchless is also having a Halloween shindig. It’s their 5th Annual Costume Party / Contest with cash prizes as well as other bar prizes for best costumes. In the back room they have the Return of the Shalita’s with special guests 8:30pm until 12.Shalita’s on at 10:30pm. In the front room they have THE OHIO PARTY madness. And it’s all FREE. Facebook event here.

Thanks to Bitch*Cakes for the heads up.

Tommy’s Tavern is getting in on the Halloween madness and if you’ve ever been to Tommy’s, you know that joint is scary enough as it is!

2ND ANNUAL HALLOWEEN NITE DANCE PARTY!
    †††NOCTURNO de SACRIFICIO†††
    (BLOOD, GUTS, AND SHAKIN’ BUTTS)
    AT TOMMY’S TAVERN
    with
    LATE AT NITE featuring
    DJ Bobbi “Bloody” Lupo
    and
    Renee Alizaaaaahhh!!
    10PM
    DANCE ALL NITE!!!!

Ok and last, but certainly not least is The Greatest Halloween Party Ever. Yes, we said EVER!

This year our theme is the ‘Annihilation of Oz’. Seeing how this year is the 70th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz, we thought it would be appropriate. Also, being that we want to keep growing the party bigger and bigger, we moved it to The Warsaw – 261 Driggs Ave at Eckford.

We have been going all out on this one. In our mad back offices at 94 Productions we are making:

    Dorothy’s Demolished Bedroom
A giant Fighting Tree See Saw (hopefully he will be nicer to us than he was to Toto)
    A Life Size Tornado
And, back again, The one and Only Ball Pit ( this year its a little different- think POPPIES)

We are also excited about the top notch talent we got in on it with us this year:
    DRAGONS OF ZYNTH
    TOYS IN TROUBLE
    THE VANDELLES

our DJ lineup includes local faves:
    SMUT VILLIAN
    QUESO STACKS
    and HOORAY!

A few deals that we are offering to even further entice:

    FREE BEER from 8-9
    FREE PEROGIES from 8-10
    Best & Worst Costume Prizes

You know what..just take a look at this….

  2. Keg & Lantern

    October 29, 2009 by Justine

On Sunday, Kea and I got a chance to catch up and check out the fairly new place Keg & Lantern on Nassau Avenue. I don’t get down that part of Greenpoint that often anymore and the fact that me and Kea haven’t actually seen each other in over a year was bordering on criminal. But enough of the pleasantries, on to the joint.

    keglantern3

Keg & Lantern is a great little Irish-y bar that surprises you with a perfect place to grab brunch, get a cocktail or watch the game. Owned by husband & wife team of Lindsey & Kieran, it has a similar vibe to Red Star on the other end of Greenpoint with an upscale sports bar feel, but cozier. Kea was telling me she’d been there before and noticed they offered the soccer players in McCarren Park 2 for 1 specials on nights they played which I thought was great. It’s so close to the park and yet totally doesn’t have that hipster-y feel that most of the joints on the other side have going on. Keg & Lantern just felt like a great bar to just “hang”, which I loved.

    keglantern

It was prime time brunch time and they had your basic brunch fare available, omelets, french toast, etc. along with a surprising traditional Irish breakfast complete with black and white pudding.

    keglantern2

I started off with a mimosa, Kea with a (virgin!) bloody mary and coffee. She had an omelet and I went with the Keg & Lantern burger. Both hit the spot. We finished off with cheesecake and tiramisu for dessert. We lingered, talked and enjoyed the company of Lindsey who was tending bar.

The inside has a real comfy cozy feel to it. A good sized bar, well stocked with a VERY nice variety of draft beer. Happy Hour is all day from 11AM until 7PM and offers $4 beer, wine, and well liqour. Sit indoors or out!

Flat screen tvs, ample tables and an open window front that lets you catch the passers by if the game is not exactly what you feel like watching. Also, they serve food until 2am which in Greenpoint is pretty hard to find.

    keglantern5

Keg & Lantern has a World Series Food and Drink Special – Any Night the Yankees play they’ll be showing it on their large screen tv’s and offering 2 for 1 appetizers and $3 dollar Bud and Budlights. As a bonus, you should stop by this Friday October 30th to say hi to Lindsey & Kieran and for the free PBR from 7-8pm and $4 drafts and car bombs!

  4. Greenpoint Glee!

    by Justine

The Greenpoint Church is holding auditions for their Christmas service that includes a reading of the Christmas story and they’re looking to “Glee” it up for the holiday this year!

You may be wondering why you are receiving this email about a Christmas show at the church. Excellent question. Every year our church has a Christmas service that includes a reading of the Christmas story. This year we wanted to do something a little different- some drama, some singing- kind of like that show Glee, but Greenpoint-style.

So many creative types devote their time to the soup kitchen and food pantry, we thought it would be fun to include any volunteers who are interested. The Christmas show is Sunday, December 20th at 11am.

Auditions are Tuesday, November 3rd and Thursday, November 5th from 7pm to 8:30pm. You do not need to prepare anything. Just show up if you have an interest in acting or singing. If you are interested, email me, Pastor Jen, at jen@greenpointchurch.org and include what time you would like to come by.

    See you there.
    Pastor Jen

Thanks to Joann for the heads up!

  6. Manhattan Comes To Greenpoint

    October 28, 2009 by Justine

Originally I was given the heads up of Manhattan Inn via Twitter from The Great Pumpkin. The joint is finally opening next week and it sounds like something a little more upscale than what we’re used to seeing over here in the ‘point. Which is nice, cause sometimes you don’t feel like going to WBurg to get some Pumpkin Butternut Squash stew.

You can attend the Grand Opening and get to be one of the first to check out this new gastropub by emailing your RSVP to abbey.manhattaninn@gmail.com

Glasslands Gallery proprietors Rolyn Hu and Brooke Baxter are happy to announce the grand opening of their new bar and restaurant, Manhattan Inn on Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 at 8pm.

Formerly Johnny’s Cafe, this large dining house and full bar located in Greenpoint on Manhattan Avenue (between Bedford and Nassau, one block from McCarren Park); will be serving new American cuisine with tapas-like fare. Daily specials will coincide with seasonal produce sourced from local suppliers, including Rooftop Farms and Farm to Chef. Specialty dishes will include: Berkshire Pie (slow cooked Berkshire pork topped with creamed roots) and Pumpkin Butternut Squash stew.

Seating around 75, Manhattan Inn houses a grand piano with stellar acoustics for live musical acts. The bar will serve new and old fashioned cocktails, as well as a unique wine and beer list selected by James Endicott, formerly of Per Se and Allen & Delancey.

Chef Jesse Carpenter will be at the helm. His cuisine combines the accessibility of southern comfort food he enjoyed while living in Kentucky, the rustic flavors he experienced on the West Coast, and the varied, sophisticated dishes he mastered in New York City kitchens. The owners will be working closely with him, sharing recipes from both our respective backgrounds– Brooke’s British family and Rolyn’s traditional Chinese upbringing.

Manhattan Inn is proud to display the design of hOmE, a collaborative effort of Evan and Oliver Haslegrave who redesigned the most current incarnation of Glasslands Gallery. Manhattan Inn was built with a nod to the current detailed woodwork and playful whimsy of the Gallery — repurposed doorknobs as tap handles, school desks as dining tables.

Come January, Manhattan Inn will be open for breakfast and lunch, and will serve a full menu of espresso beverages.

    Hours of operation:
    Monday – Thursday: 4pm – 2:30am. Dinner served 6pm – 12:30am
    Friday: 4pm – 4am. Dinner served 6pm – 2:30am

Ah, I’m so excited for my totally first post relating to the holiday season! And it’s not even Halloween yet… <3 From past years here on Greenpointers you know I'm a sucker for a craft fair. I can't help it, it's side effects from a stint in the suburbs.

This post is mainly for vendors who are interested in sharing their wares at the event but for shoppers like me, I’m paying close attention to the date of the actual fair. ;)

3rd Ward & Brooklyn Based are looking for vendors for their 3rd Annual Handmade Holiday Craft Fair.

Our annual Handmade Holiday Craft Fair has been a huge success drawing over 1,500 people with great locally made gifts, live music, delicious foods and exciting workshops. And we’re making the magic happen all over again this year! But we need you!
