Game Day for the Pets

I received an email from Jay of Unleash: Brooklyn to tell me about some of the new things going on. Especially exciting is the petsitting during football season for those folks who love to watch the game at a bar on Sunday but might feel guilty leaving Rover home alone. I could totally get that, most of us work all week leaving our pets home alone and then when the weekend comes we might not get a chance to give them as much attention or fun as we want to. Now they can go out and have fun while you’re out having fun! Isn’t that so cute?

Unleash is working closely with some of our neighbors who have been trained by the Mayor’s Alliance for Animals in TNR – Trap, Neuter, Release. There’s a cat colony in the vicinity of India St that will be housed at Unleash for 1-2 weeks (post-surgery).

Dog Habitat is prepared to accept dogs (owner surrender, found/lost dogs) and we are waiting approval from the Mayor’s Alliance for permission to rescue dogs from NYC Animal Care & Control shelters. We’re really excited to finally start the rehabilitation and adoption process!

In celebration of the opening of DH and to raise awareness of dogs in need of rescue and rehabilitation; Unleash: Brooklyn is offering a special package during the NFL season (especially THIS season). We’re teaming up with local bars (t.b.d., Mark Bar, Red Star, etc.) so their customers can enjoy a full Sunday (or Monday night) of watching football with friends while their ‘best friend’ can play at Unleash.

A portion of the $ for each dog that registers at Unleash will go directly to Dog Habitat. $5 from a one-day $20 visit and $100 from a full season ($400). We’re thrilled with the response from local bars and creating partnerships for the benefit of dogs in need.

Get To The Point 5K

I know, I know, I’m talking about running again, but its(unfortunately)become my life since marathon training began. In part of my planning for the big day, I will be participating in Get To The ‘Point, Greenpoint’s 5k run.

Interested runners (and walkers) should register by October 9th and mark race day, October 11th their calendars. Get To The Point is a 16 year tradition that is hosted annually by St. Stan’s Athletic League and the $15 registration fee goes to league’s sports programs. Registration is $20 the day of the 5k.

If you are worried about sticking it out, here are two things to remind yourself: a 5k is only 3.1 miles and you can always WALK. To the right is the course map to even further ease your mind.
And better yet, you don’t even have to get up early (most people won’t have to get up early) because the race starts at 1pm.

So get a group of friends, take your $15 that you would normally spend on brunch and use it to support our community. Its also great practice for marathoners to get familiar with running in big packs of people.

Blog Buzz: Accents, Skaters & Budapest

On September 14th in Greenpoint’s history we were named a historic district. And did you know that “it has not been proven, but folklore claims that Brooklyn’s famous and distinctive accent was born in Greenpoint“. I believe it! – The Brooklyn Eagle

Brunch at The Habitat starts this Saturday from 11am-3pm offering a price fix menu which includes any brunch item, coffee or tea, and choice of bloody mary, mimosa, or red sangria (the bloody bar will still be available for all of you die hard fans). Everything on the menu is brand spanking new, so definitely stop by and check us out! Check out the sneak peak of the BLT club sandwich… looks soooo delicious.

I sorta can’t believe that McCarren Park’s skate park is already open. I remember back in the day hanging out with the skateboard and freestyle kids in Key Food parking lot and trooping over the Pulaski everyday, sometimes twice a day, to chill at the abnormally hilly Honeywell parking lot. Me and my girlfriends would check out the cuties do their ollies and tricks. I had my first kiss in that Honeywell parking lot. Maybe I’ll go reminisce and check out the new kids… Actually, I’d probably wind up arrested for googling young boys, so scratch that. – Curbed

Greenpoint is worldwide! Kate Summers found this sign on a random corner in Budapest last month:

If you graduated from St Francis of Paola (1967-72) you’ve got a reunion to attend!
When: OCTOBER 16 2009 at 7PM
Where: Richardson Bar and Grill on Graham & Richardson.
PLEASE NOTE: The reunion is for the people who graduated from 1967 to 1972. The reason we chose these years is that 1967 was the first year to graduate from the school, and 1970 was the first class to go through kindergarten to 8th grade & graduate.

My blog buddy Lisanne over at Found In Brooklyn has a follow up to some random Greenpoint photos she found over a year and half ago. And it turns out the boys in front of the fire engine were local heroes! – Found in Brooklyn

Due to the rain last weekend the Fun & Film in Cooper Park was postponed to this Saturday. There will be crafts and music for kids of all ages, followed by the film “Howl’s Moving Castle” on the lawn when it gets dark. All in all a nice family fun day!

Design*Sponge features a photo walk through of Maya Marzolf of Le Grenier’s Greenpoint home. It’s eclectic, fun and totally drool worthy – a MUST click. – Design*Sponge

I was home all weekend recuperating from a wicked sprained ankle so I missed the inagural weekend of Joann’s baby, the Greenpoint Food Market, but lucky for me (and you!) it’s every Saturday! I have plans this weekend but I’m hoping to get over there on the 26th and get myself some of these adorable little Greenpoint cookies from Sugarbilt!
