Art, Food and Funemployment
September 25, 2009 by Joann
I’ll go ahead and start off with some fearless self-promotion. As mentioned here before I have organized Greenpoint Food Market which will be in its third round tomorrow at Church of Messiah located at 129 Russell Street open from Noon – 5pm. Folks bring all sorts of delicious goods made from home presented at the market: soups, baked goods of all kinds, boiled peanuts, scallion pancakes, pickles, kombucha, popcorn, and beyond. We’re always on the lookout for vendors so if you’ve been itchin’ in the kitchen and want to share with the locals than shoot me an email. Otherwise come tomorrow with an empty belly and clean fingers as you will be sampling a variety of pure homemade genius.
In the last month or so I’ve organized Greenpoint Open Studios, which is a weekend-long event where artists working in the neighborhood open their studios to the public engaging in all things collaborative and community building, followed by exhibitions at local galleries, artists talks, and afterparties. It’s a celebration of a burgeoning art scene in the neighborhood and I’ve thought to organize the event in hopes of bringing artists together dancing on this platform where networking, collaborating, and fun-having would ensue. Please join me TONIGHT at Transmitter Park starting 7pm for an evening launch celebration with a video screening and dance performance and popcorn.
Now, onto more fun and exciting activities. I’ve run into these invitations and they sound pretty radical.
Dennis (of Sinned) completed the mural in the yard of Papacitos and will be celebrating with an art show October 3rd from 5-7pm with more paintings indoors by him along with artist and designer Jesse Jones. I’ve witnessed the mural transform from a blank wall into a bizarre day of the dead scene with skeletons donned in pink and purple animations, cute and creepy all at the same time. I’ll be there arttalking with a mouthful of carne asada tacos.
This Sunday the folks at Kill Devil Hill are putting together a cocktail party from 6-9pm celebrating the silent film actress Mary Pickford. In their words: “She was known for trying to help actors during the depression and one way is she would nail tin cans to studio walls to collect change for out of work actors. In her honour we will not only be making a cocktail named after her, but doing an installation of tin cans to collect money to be donated a cause (we are still thinking of the right one). It’s a celebratory affair for us underfunded creative types and what better to enjoy and survive the second depression than with drinks and pocket change!Speaking of second depression, Greenpoint’s own Unemployed Brooklyn is putting together a get-together for the funemployed on Sept 30th at t.b.d. starting at 4pm. It’s a casual meeting to spur networking and conversations, sharing opportunities and cover letter writing skills. I will be there as a opportunist stealing everyone’s unique job getting ideas.

That Was Fast
September 23, 2009 by Kea

Michael Sullivan, chef of the new-to-the-neighborhood, Anella, is leaving our little Italian outpost. This sad tidbit from Grub Street was in my Greenpoint newsfeed today:This just in from a rep of the chef:
Michael Sullivan, Chanterelle/Le Zinc alum and chef of Anella in Greenpoint, has departed the well-reviewed neighborhood trattoria’s stoves effective this past weekend, cooking his last brunch on Sunday, September 20th. Sullivan, now evaluating new culinary projects, plans to compete as an independent entrant in The Food Network’s New York Food and Wine Festival’s “Meatball Madness” Contest on October 9th, a spot he secured with the story of his Irish grandmother Dolly’s recipe, a fan favorite.
Good Luck to you, Mr. Sullivan, I hope your meatballs prove to be pure magic!

Thirsty Thursdays!
by Justine
One of my girlfriends works Thursday nights and Friday days at the local watering hole, Connie O’s and I think you should all go on down and say hi to Jess tomorrow after work. She’s on from 6pm-4am and will welcome you with open arms (and cold beers)!
You’d be hard pressed to find better deals in the neighborhood:
$3.25 for domestic bottles – Bud and Coors Lights
$3.50 premium domestic – Michelob Ultra, Bud Light Lime
$3.50 for imported – Heineken, Heineken Light, Corona, Becks, Becks Light
Most booze is $4-5 and add 1.25 for Red Bull mixed inAND $1.50 mugs of draft!! Can’t get much more economical than that.
And the art of the buy back isn’t lost – it’s alive and well at Connie O’s, which I have to admit is hard to find in today’s day and age. If you’re looking for a REAL bar – cheap cold beers, a little pool, a little darts, the game on the tv and a friendly bartender this is the secret spot.

Game Day for the Pets
by Justine
I received an email from Jay of Unleash: Brooklyn to tell me about some of the new things going on. Especially exciting is the petsitting during football season for those folks who love to watch the game at a bar on Sunday but might feel guilty leaving Rover home alone. I could totally get that, most of us work all week leaving our pets home alone and then when the weekend comes we might not get a chance to give them as much attention or fun as we want to. Now they can go out and have fun while you’re out having fun! Isn’t that so cute?
Unleash is working closely with some of our neighbors who have been trained by the Mayor’s Alliance for Animals in TNR – Trap, Neuter, Release. There’s a cat colony in the vicinity of India St that will be housed at Unleash for 1-2 weeks (post-surgery).
Dog Habitat is prepared to accept dogs (owner surrender, found/lost dogs) and we are waiting approval from the Mayor’s Alliance for permission to rescue dogs from NYC Animal Care & Control shelters. We’re really excited to finally start the rehabilitation and adoption process!
In celebration of the opening of DH and to raise awareness of dogs in need of rescue and rehabilitation; Unleash: Brooklyn is offering a special package during the NFL season (especially THIS season). We’re teaming up with local bars (t.b.d., Mark Bar, Red Star, etc.) so their customers can enjoy a full Sunday (or Monday night) of watching football with friends while their ‘best friend’ can play at Unleash.
A portion of the $ for each dog that registers at Unleash will go directly to Dog Habitat. $5 from a one-day $20 visit and $100 from a full season ($400). We’re thrilled with the response from local bars and creating partnerships for the benefit of dogs in need.
