  3. Bring Your Homeroom Home

    by Justine

I got an email from the owners of Greenpoint Vintage yesterday. You know how much I love vintage ever since I was in the 7th grade rocking my grandpa’s old suit jackets with my ripped jeans and Docs.

Greenpoint Vintage is a just-started reclaimed and restored vintage furniture outfit run by Connie Smith and Dom Williams. Dom is a trained furniture maker, working on his own-design projects as well as refinishing and restoring vintage pieces. They’re also selling on Craigslist and are about to start at the Brooklyn Flea. But first up they’re having an opening sale this weekend Aug 1st & 2nd from 10am til 6pm at 15 Monitor Street (the old St. Cecilia’s school).

I seriously wonder if my ass sat on this at some point twenty some odd years ago:

  5. Gotta Get a J-O-B?

    July 29, 2009 by Justine

No luck trolling Craigslist & Monster? Epic fail on nepotism and cronyism? Unemployment runnig out? You realizing you gotta start doing something more proactive but don’t know what? Get down with Unemployed Brooklyn’s Buddy System.

Briana Campbell, local Greenpoint blogger was recently featured on NY1 discussing her employment search and blog which led her to organizing a Greenpoint/Williamsburg group for supporting and assisting each other in their job search.

Here’s the deal. Sometimes other people are going to have a very different perspective on your life and your job hunt and where your set of skills might come in handy. It’s so easy to get lost in one’s own head when you’re looking for a job and the extra brainpower from some fellow unemployeds might come in handy…

I think Briana has an excellent idea and something that could really help all sorts of people. I know when I was job searching I came across opportunities all the time that I just wasn’t a good fit for, but seemed like a great job. I have friends and family that work in all different fields and infact that’s how I got my current job – through a family member who brought it up to a friend of a friend. They asked for resume and the rest is history. Networking is the best possible way to find something that’s just right for you.

Check out Unemployed Brooklyn and contact Briana at unemployedbrooklyn [at] gmail [dot] com for more inforamtion.

  7. Blog Buzz: Food & Drink Edition

    by Justine

Our very own Kea got a sneak peek at Berry Bar this weekend and after Grub Street picked up her post, we’re sincerely hoping these guys open STAT! Update 7/29: A commenter says they will be open in two weeks.

Another local watering hole has some news as well, The Richardson‘s Sidewalk Cafe is now open. You can now enjoy cocktails & food OUTSIDE, all day, everyday (’til midnight during the week & ’til 1am on Fridays & Saturdays).

My favorite haunt The Habitat has begun serving up their full menu until midnight! And… beginning in September they will (finally!) be serving brunch on the weekends from 11 to 3 pm! I can hardly contain myself. Also, this Thursday they’re doing another one of their hugely popular beer tatsings with flights of 4 8oz glasses of Lagunitas is just $13.

Last weeks Brooklyn Based Table Scraps post included a plethora of WBurg info such as Pies n’ Thighs is about to begin construction on their new space on South 4th and Driggs and founding chef of Marlow and Sons and Diner, Caroline Fidanza, is opening a new restaurant of her own called Saltie’s at 378 Metropolitan, in the space formerly known as Cheeks turning out, “pastries, sandwiches, ice cream, and as much good food as we can produce out of a small space,” according to Fidanza. Also, Bonita I on Bedford Ave is closing on August 15th.

I stumbled upon this blogger’s recommendations of Peter Pan (duh!) and Golden Cafe, which I never even heard of. Seems the Yelpers like it, too. There’s a lot to choose from the neighborhood for Polish food but it’s always nice to have another one. And especially one that’s open until 11pm daily!

The New York Times Diner Journal recommends one of my favorite Polish restaurants in the ‘hood – Lomzynianka. Lomzynianka is high on the list of local top stops for authenticity and price.

One of the most useful posts I’ve ever come across – New World Review does a full on list of Latin food places in North Brooklyn. It includes Acapulco, Cafecito Bogota, Pio Pio Riko and Papcito’s among others. A definitive list if I ever saw one.

The Village Voice does a piece on Cookie Road’s specialty cookies. While I don’t think I could ever shell out $25 for a cookie, the novelty of them is pretty spectacular. The great part is that Cookie Road still offers fantastic treats and delicious coffee in their shop for those of us not interested in Michael Jackson cookies.

  8. Sui Ren Opens In Williamsburg

    July 28, 2009 by Kea

Fellow Greenpointer, Tien Chang, has opened Sui Ren in Williamsburg. Though the menu is Japanese, don’t expect Rainbow and California rolls. Instead anticipate divergent concoctions like Kinko, a juicy King Oyster Mushroom, skewered and grilled to succulent perfection or Kani Chahan, a mound of fried rice with a soft shell crab perched on top. I generally have an aversion to entire animals on my plate, but this cooked crab practically begged me to eat it. Smoky meat that was flawlessly tender and seasoned, burst through its crispy outer shell upon my first bite.

Along with Sui Ren’s lenghty menu that included both hot and cold items, skewers, salads and ramens, there was an offering of several specials. We opted for the grilled squid drizzled in squid liver sauce – an organ I never attributed to that particular species before this dining experience. Expecting the chewy resistance that squid normally puts up, I was surprised when the texture presented itself as silky and delicate.

Yes, the sushi love boat for two was absent, but not missed. Among our other dishes were a tomato and avocado salad bathed in a soy wasabi dressing and a dense stack of crepes layered in heavy cream topped with fresh berries for dessert. The menu is a la carte with smaller dishes at a very reasonable prices. Sui Ren’s most expensive plate will set you back a whopping $12.

We dined in the backyard that is situated around a tree with pretty lavender flowers that fell sporadically around us as we ate. The back seemed popular with the other diners (of which there were many) as it was a nice evening and the alternative was the restaurant’s inside, which is spacious, yet a little dark.

Catching up with Chang, who also goes by the first name Morgan, it was obvious the new restaurateur feels as if he has lucked out, not only with the space (located conveniently at n.4th and Roebling) but also with the steady stream of customers since Sui Ren’s June 10th opening. Though his project is well underway and receiving great reviews – it is still a work in progress. Planned for the backyard is a Yakai stall which will serve grilled Taiwanese street food. With this addition, Chang hopes to bring in customers looking alternatively for a to-go snack rather than a sit down dinner.

Worth noting is the fact that the Japanese eatery finally got its much coveted liquor license last week and is now serving sake and beer. Chang plans on having a grand opening for his place sometime in August, but I would recommend getting there before then to see what I’m talking about.

    Sui Ren
    302 Metropolitan Ave
between Driggs Ave & Roebling St
