As you may or may not know, I’ve been helping organize the India Street Mural Project where 6 artists have taken over a huge wall on India and West and are currently installing some awesome art. We’ll be having a fundraiser next week at Gallery 1889 on Manhattan & Eagle and would love to receive your support. There will be music, drinks, live screenprinting, food from Anella, haircuts by a sculptor/inventor and portraits painted on found objects. Go on the website for more info and purchase tickets and support us as we continue to beautify North Brooklyn through public art.
I, myself, was a circus virgin. That’s right, I’d never been to the circus before in my life. The Boom-A-Ring was exactly what I imagined. A big tent, animals, acrobats, clowns and death defying acts. It was just like in the movies!
My personal favorite parts were the daredevil motorcyclists in the sphere cage and the beautiful white tigers. But I throughly enjoyed the acrobats and the elephants, too.
It was such a fun time, taking the F train out to Coney, stopping by Nathan’s for a hot dog, seeing the circus, eating cotton candy (My stomach wasn’t thrilled with me that night) and walking the boardwalk back. Tickets start at $10 and I have to say it is something everyone should catch this Summer. It runs through September 7th and it’s a perfect thing to do with your girlfriends, kids or even a date. This is the first time that the circus has come to Coney Island and I hope that this becomes one of the regular stops on the Ringling Bros tours. From one of my friends who saw the circus at MSG – she said it was a MUCH better experience under the tent. So there.

Also of note, this Saturday is the Coney Island Mermaid Parade which I checked out last year and had a great time. The weather doesn’t look like it’s gonna be great but those Coey Islanders know how party so I’m sure rain or shine the parade will be amazing.

When I lived in Staten Island I had a few cool brunch spots that offered unlimited drinks with a set price. A couple of my favorites were Side Street Saloon and Cargo Cafe. Before I left, Cargo Cafe went from unlimited to one drink included, but it was still a kick ass spot.
Now I find that on lazy Sunday’s I’m spending time in Astoria, most notably at Blackbird’s for their brunch that includes unlimited bloody marys, mimosas, and screw drivers from 12pm-3pm. A heck of a deal and the food and atmosphere are pretty great.
But I’d love to find a place that I could walk to or crawl from.
Greenpoint has it’s share of awesome brunch spots but I’ve yet to come across an unlimited brunch special. Somewhere that has a base price with a choice of meals and all you can drink mimosas or bloody mary’s. I’d even travel to Williamsburg for that…

Former Beehiver and Greenpoint resident, Jess Stover, is opening her own snip shop, Adelaide Salon. I have been a devotee for quite some time and it has become virtually impossible for me to let my guard down with any coiffeuse that isn’t her.
This is a way positive development because I think its slim pickings in the ‘point when it comes to places to get your ears lowered.
7 Eleven is coming to Greenpoint. One of my favorite old storefronts sure to get a complete gut job. I’m actually pretty surprised to see this happening. I just never pictured Manhattan Avenue a 7 Eleven kinda spot. The chain seems too suburban.
As much as I know people are gonna jump on the hater bandwagon, I personally am not all that upset to see it coming. At least it’s not another bank.
We’ve mentioned Rob of District Dog‘s venture in opening Unleash before and I’ve been looking forward to launch day for WEEKS! Finally last week I got to attend the opening night and WOW. WOW.
Imagine a home for your dogs that’s 30 times the size your own and that’s Unleash. This 7000 sq feet raw open loft space provides cage-free daycare and boarding with dogs roaming freely upstairs and the cats loitering in luxuriously divided rooms and scratching away in the elaborately constructed tree shaped play area.
It’s your go to place for all your pet’s care and needs with walking and running services, an all natural and organic boutique and spa to pamper your pets as well as training courses with Empire of the Dog. Opening soon will be Dog Habitat, a local rescue group that rehabilitates and re-homes homeless and abandoned dogs, as well as a holistic vet clinic to cure those runs.
I honestly don’t know of any place that serves such varied accommodations. And with my precious dog as a witness you can take my word when I say rest assured, Rob and the crew at Unleash will care for your pet with utmost attention.
