Tragically Nauseating

A press release I got this week:

Hello,
I am working to open Brooklyn’s first Bartending school. We hope to begin classes within the next week and would really love to work with you in this endeavor. I am attaching our press release and the website is in the signature of this e-mail. I really look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time.

For Immediate Release:

Brooklyn Bartending Academy is pleased to announce our inaugural summer season of classes. All bartending academies are not created equally, and we are the only authentic one catering specifically to the young and tragically hip on the Brooklyn scene, or those who wish to be. Our academy features real bartenders at some of Williamsburg’s most popular bars, as well as entrée to the hottest social scene in the city. BBA prides itself on not only teaching the fundamentals of bartending, but also introducing its students to the movers and shakers of the nightlife, something no other bartending academy offers.

Our classes are offered weekly and run from 10am-1pm, offering 12 hours of bartending instruction. These classes will take place at Artland Bar, a staple of the Williamsburg bar and to cap off the week, we will host a Friday night graduation celebration at varying locations where students will mingle with the who’s who of Brooklyn society while showing off their bartending skills; this party is what makes BBA unique. We pride ourselves on not just teaching the basics, but really immersing our students in the society in which they wish to work. Through us, they will meet the best of Brooklyn’s DJs and nightlife photographers, as well as their fellow drink slingers. These connections will be the crux of their success as bartenders.

Brooklyn Bartending Academy is the new generation of bartending academies: while we teach the fundamentals that all bartending academies offer, we take it to the next level. We are excited to cultivate the next wave in Brooklyn bartenders. Please contact the Brooklyn Bartending Academy at info@brooklynbartending.com for additional information or press materials.

This whole thing made me vomit in my mouth a little.

Who is this for? The kids who just got off the bus from Wichita? Anyone who wants this “course” needs to get a life. If you’re not already “tragically hip”, this “class” is probably not your key to becoming so. Besides, how hard is it to crack open a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon anyway? You need a 12 hour class to do that?

I smell another grifster.

Blog Buzz: Double Helping

SummerScreen is back! With hipster delights such as Reality Bites and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, this summer at McCarren is sure to full of bearded men in women’s jeans and their equally pre-pubescent undeveloped mates! – L Magazine

I got an email this morning about The Williamsburg Flea Market opening June 7th. The a 10,000 square-foot market will take place every Sunday from 10am-6pm on Wythe Avenue between S 2nd and S 3rd Streets. – The Williamsburg Flea Market

Papacito’s graden is open once again! Although this time around there’s a new smoking section and a bathroom! If you didn’t get a chance to check them out last year, be sure to get over there this time around. Cody’s spruced the place up and is taking over the space next door where the psychic used to be. Papacito’s has a really rare, nice gem with that outdoor space. It’s a perfect place to chill as the weather heats up. – Papacito’s

Local photographer Kristy May has updated her website and added new work like this great post of the gentrification of 76 Franklin Street.

Cafecito Bogota is giving away all-natural, Fruit Cholados to the first 50 customers this upcoming Saturday, May 23 at 1:00 pm. What’s a cholado you ask? “Cholado is a typical iced cold beverage common in Colombia’s hot climate cities. It is made from crushed or shaved ice, fresh seasonal fruit, homemade fruit syrups, and sweetened condensed milk. Our fruit cholados feature all-natural, exotic flavors from fruits imported from our tropical homeland.” Mmmmmmmm!

If you grew up in Greenpoint, you had one of these calendars growing up. A Greenpoint Savings Bank calendar for the spirit of ’76 – if it was 1975, it would be MINE! – eBay

Brooklyn Based takes a sneak peek at Brooklyn Bowl. Sadly at the slow rate I am able to keep up with my emails, I missed out on the sneak peek tour. Arggggggg! But the place sounds and looks awesome. Is there room for two bowling alley’s in GPT/WB? Only time will tell… – Brooklyn Based

Friday, June 5, 2009, 10:30 p.m. – 4:00 a.m. at Enid’s, 560 Manhattan Avenue. “Librarians, archivists, bibliophiles, and those looking to meet them, are invited to dance, drink, and help make the world more literate. I love that someone is trying to stop the ice cream trucks from playing thier annoying DaDi DaDi DiDi Da… music. That music is one of those parts about New York that just brings you back. But shit, it IS annoying as all hell. – UPI

Jeremiah’s Vanishing New York takes a look at Franklin Street. With nuggets of PURE wisdom like “Even though Manhattan Ave is more crowded with pedestrians, people there know how to walk. They move to the right, as New Yorkers have done for generations. I tested this on both streets and I can assure you: On Manhattan they move to the right, on Franklin they don’t.” This might be favorite new blog. – Jeremiah’s Vanishing New York

Starting July 5th, the G goes to Prospect Park. Since I have finally come to terms with the fact that it takes three trains to get to Steinway Street, I guess I’m happy about this. No wait, I’m still fucking aggravated the G doesn’t go past Court Square. I may never get over this. – Gothamist

Teenage boys yelling at those dirty hipsters getting jiggy with it on the McCarren Park lawn… Classic! – Jillian Tamaki Sketchbook

The Great Greenpoint BBQrawl

There’s another crawl coming to town!

The Great Greenpoint Mac-Off was such a rousing success that the local watering holes are up to it again this Saturday with The Great Greenpoint BBQrawl.

This time around there will be a different Brooklyn Brewery beer at each stop and free food.

New specialty beer shop Brouwerij Lane will be participating with offerings of brownies and Brooklyn Brown Ale. Black Rabbit will feature hot dogs and Brooklyn Pennant while Van Gogh’s Radio chooses to participate in the crawl by offering vegetarian and meat bratwurst and a Brooklyn Pilsner special. Trays of chicken wings and pints of Brooklyn Pale Ale will be ready for crawlers at the Mark Bar while t.b.d. Brooklyn will be grilling up veggie and beef burgers in the first run of their 5,000 sq ft beer garden and pouring Brooklyn Summer Ale.

If you’re stuck in the city this weekend, may as well stay close to home and take advantage of the local flava!

The Circus Comes To Greenpoint

In my old age I’ve become vain and paranoid. These manifest themselves in many different ways (like cutting out the 1 pound box of Cheeze-Its nights and being obsessively into step aerobics – to name a few)but one of my main weapons in metabolism warfare has been the (attempted) annihilation of beer from my diet.

I miss it a lot and to make things worse my boyfriend is a beer distributor and would probably brush his teeth with the frothy beverage if that was an acceptable practice. So yeah, you could say its a rift. Its not like the Grand Canyon of issues, but I do make us cross the street when we are passing Brouwerij Lane.

Now I’m sounding crazy, but the problem is – Brouwerij Lane is REALLY, really cool. It looks cool with its fire place and its endless taps and if you want to talk ambers and ales, the people working there will geek out with you for hours on the topic. Its like they live by the open door policy, where you can come in, mill around, chit chat – even lurk in the corners – and they are happy to have you. For someone like my boyfriend, it’s like a club house.

This Thursday, Brouwerij Lane (how do you pronounce that anyway?) is having a Coney Island Beer promo complete with a side show featuring The Human Blockhead and some women who swallows SWORDS – so, needless to say, I’ll be breaking my beer fast. Even though every day there is an open house, this one is also featuring Nathan’s hot dogs and Albino Python White Lager which is a tasty summer drink. If you need any more incentive than that, my boyfriend says that the girl who represents Coney Island Beer is really hot. So, I’ll see you there.
