The Baby Pigeons Live On My Fire Escape!

All the jokes you’ve heard about never seeing baby pigeons can finally be put to rest, especially for me. There are baby pigeons living on my fire escape!

Baby Pigeons

Baby Pigeons

Now, granted these couple of shots aren’t exactly the best but I’m no urban nature photographer and I don’t want to piss off the parental units so that I get shit on for the next decade.

On The Cheap

I am one broke bitch.

Pretty much always have been. Likely always will be. Probably why I love me a bargain. I’ve been trying extra hard lately to find affordable things in the neighborhood for myself. I’m going to start passing on the deals I find around town. And just so you know, what I find to be a deal is a real deal. I’m poor, not looking to save $100 on a $300 bag like some people. I’m looking to eat and live. Tips are definitley welcome!

Some of the deals I’ve been taking advantage of for awhile:

LA Cafe has a daily special that is usually a buck off one of their dishes. Forexample, a big plate of Baked Ziti will run you $6 instead of $7 and you’ll have enough for a light lunch leftover the next day.

W Nassau Meat Market and pretty much all the Polish meat shops are super cheap and super fresh. A loaf of fresh rye bread is gonna cost you just $1.25 and enough kielbasa to make sandwiches for a week will cost you like $5.

Polish food in general is cheap and sometimes you really just want to go out to dinner. Karczma is a great deal and their food is delicious. You can easily do dinner for two for $20.

In the shopping realm, I really love Angel Street Thrift Shop. Especially when they are having a sale. They’re only open on the weekends but sometimes they run a sick sale. I’ve been in there twice when everything was 75% off. A superb deal.

I’m not even going to get into the bar deals around town because that could be a post all by itself. From Wednesday’s Ladies Night at The Habitat to $3 Brooklyn IPA’s at Shayz Lounge, there are many deals to be had in just about every watering hole in Greenpoint. Thankfully.

This post was inspired by another Greenpoint blogger – Unemployed Brooklyn and her Gettin’ It On The Cheap post especially.

McCarren Park Bootcamp

Get your ass kicked by native Greenpointer and my homegirl Tray and her partner Deemsy!

I truly heart Tracy and I’ve heard nothing but good things about her personal trainer skills so I heartily recommend checking this out if you’re into a hardcore outdoor workout!

Deemsy Arias and Tracy Helsing are starting an outdoor bootcamp class in Williamsburg’s*** McCarren Park, one stop on the L from the city.

This bootcamp will be fun, but essentially an ass kicker. Take part only if you really want results because everyone must be prepared to work. The bootcamp class will have a variety of components such as strength training, sprints and cardio on the track, agility drills, cardio drills, sandbags, kettlebells. People will be running, jumping, playing, lifting, pulling, pushing, sweating, good times.

The classes will be an hour and are set at 25 dollars per class.

There will also be package deals announced very soon. Right now we are starting with Thursdays and Sundays at noon with more times to be added to meet the demand. First class starts Sunday, May 3rd. More info to follow but If you have any questions and are interested please do not hesitate to contact either Deemsy or Tracy.

The more the merrier, so please pass it on and bring a friend as there will be plenty of tag team and group exercises.

Hope to see you there!!

Check out their Facebook Group page for more info.

***For the record, McCarren Park is in Greenpoint, not Williamsburg but I guess when you’re trying to reach a certain group, WBurg sounds more convenient.

The North Brooklyn Story Project Benefit Concert (say that three times fast) is coming up on Tuesday April 28th at Union Pool. Fellow blogger Keith Wagstaff of Williamsburg Is Dead along with NAG, organized this shindig to benefit their project that helps to to gather memories and stories from all walks of life in the Greenpoint & Williamsburg area. – Williamsburg Is Dead

My neighborhood paper does a profile on Lark Street – what are the odds?! Moving there is my destiny. Albany – the Upstate Greenpoint. – Greenpoint Gazette

More details on the Queen’s Hideaway replacement, Anella. “…the principal owner is Blair Papagni (her husband, Josh Cohen, is the man behind Jimmy’s Diner, among other Brooklyn eateries). Maddy also revealed that a greenhouse in the back will be used to grow as much produce for the restaurant as possible, with supplemental goods coming from upstate’s Honey Locust Farm House (the farm’s owner, Nancy MacNamara, is helping the restaurant with its on-site cultivation.) An additional historical tidbit: The workbenches repurposed for the bar were salvaged from the old Steinway piano factory.” – Time Out New York

A Greenpointer starts a food blog – with recipes! Including how to make a veggie & meat lasagna for 60 people. – The Greenpoint Dish

Speakers, Workshops, Community Resources & Food (!) this Saturday at the all day community fair sponosred by NAG (those people do A LOT of stuff for the neighborhood!) that’s main focus will be on these pressing housing issues. Not all of us have trust funds or sugar daddies (much to my disappointment). – NAG

Brouwerij Lane becomes a zoo on Saturday May 2nd. A comedy theater troupe – Club Animals – will be donning dog, chicken, rat, bear, and dolphin masks and be hed in a chicken wire pen at the store. I think I’m speechless. – Brooklyn Paper

The Richardson has started serving brunch on the weekends. But this isn’t your ‘eat and feel better after a hangover’ kind of brunch, this one is more of a continuation of the night before brunch. They’re serving bagels and cream cheese, gravlax with cucumber and hard boiled egg sandwiches. ’nuff said.
