  1. Thrifty Goodness

    April 30, 2009 by Justine

The weather is FINALLY going to be nice. Not too hot, not too cold, juuuuuuust right. So the need to get out and about will be at an all time high this weekend. Things to do? Thrift shop!

This weekend is the Church of the Ascension Flea Market. Friday and Saturday May 1st & 2nd from 11am-5pm and Sunday May 3rd from Noon to 4pm at 127 Kent Street. Definitely sure to garner more than a few interested parties.

With the flea market going on, it’s more than likely that folks will be having stoop sales, too. At least I know Sarah will be on Sunday.

    Hi Justine,

I’m not sure if you normally post things like this on your blog, but I am an avid reader and I thought you might find this interesting.

My friends and I are having a huge stoop sale on this Sunday at 100 Kent between Franklin and Manhattan.

Four ladies and two dudes are selling a ton of stuff – clothes, shoes, books, kitchenware, tschotschkes, a sewing machine, camping supplies, a vintage Schwinn Collegiate bicycle, bike parts & accessories, craft supplies and tons more!

    Sunday May 3, 11am-5pm

I heard from Mark at Kill Devil Hill that some of his neighbors are also planning a tag sale for that day so it might be a good day to find cheap deals in the neighborhood.

    Thanks!
    Sarah

This Saturday also is the opening of Artists & Fleas Market in McCarren! The Market in McCarren will take place Saturdays from 10am-6pm located in the North end of McCarren Park, adjacent to the McCarren Field House and near the year-round Saturday Green Market. “A weekly outdoor independent artist and designer market in partnership with the Open Space Alliance of North Brooklyn (OSA) to benefit McCarren Park. The Market in McCarren will feature independent designers of clothing, jewelry, accessories and handmade crafts and will include an array of traditional and non-traditional visual artists.”

And for even more Flea Markets check out Brooklyn Based post on “The Other Fleas”.

    A great weekend for deals!

  3. Greenpoint Artist Profile: Emily Noelle Lambert

    by Joann

For the second edition of Greenpoint Artist Profile we are proud to present Emily Noelle Lambert. I met with the artist over Easter weekend at her studio on Manhattan Ave where hoards of people were gathered in front of the meat market to prepare for holiday feasting. I was escorted into a building that looked part residential part industrial, up a couple flights where a number of artists divided and shared the space for art making. Upon entry I was struck immediately by the haphazardous and chaotic paintings lined along the wall. I was confronted by jagged tangled sharp lines, vibrant contrasting colors, elusive dreamy/nightmarish figures, and a strict ritual of organizing chaos. I was admittedly disturbed by the jarring pictures presented in front of me and it wasn’t till the end of our visit that I was able to sit comfortably with them, cohabitating in an emotively indeterminable space.

Space and memory are at the forefront of Emily’s process, incorporating non-linear narratives with irregular distribution of form. A recently finished painting titled Iron Work exemplifies this multi-layering of elements where vibrating colors characterize lines that function as vectors of division and dissemination, and a fragile support for a mound of figures situated on the right edge of the canvas engage in unsure acts of embrace and revulsion. Recognizable objects such as a potted plant, a water bottle and figurines randomly situate themselves in between non-existent foregrounds and backgrounds continuing a journey of strange perspectives and contributing to the building of a dysfunctional yet resolutely performative stage. You can stare all you want at this painting and guaranteed you’ll find a nook of color and form you haven’t noticed before. There is a hint of coordinating balance with disorder, a collaged pile of the familiar and nonsensical that might for a brief moment instill a notion of harmonious peace.

In A History of Lovers a pair of buxom and luscious figures are sprawled in the foreground, their bodies pointing to the back with heads supported by an idle arm, their statically undulating bodies crowded by compartments of memory and remembrance. We not only witness their physical intimacy but also peer into a memory bank rife with history, collaged onto the surface with the anxious fervor and overcrowding that is typical of Times Square. The paint application is crude and sloppy, accentuating the performative aspect of an artists’ experimenting with form and narrative. The happenstance and explosive energy of these paintings are concerned with finding a path, as narrow and disguised as it may be, into order and understanding. Each painting is a door that is never firmly closed, open to a variety of interpretations and perspectives. It’ll take more than a simple glance to fully experience these works, it’s a meditative process to sift through the compartments, the relationships between figures, space and memory, and will ask of you to not only absorb but to share your own personal histories with what is made open to you.

Emily grew up in Pittsburg and recently received her MFA from Hunter College. She lives in Sunnyside, Queens and has been working in Greenpoint for the last seven years. She and a few others have convinced me to check out the yoga studio on Franklin, Kusala, praising the small and loving community of creative types conjoined to rock out to warriors and utkatasanas (I’ll be making a trip soon and report). Emily loves the pockets of activity found in the neighborhood but wishes there were more green spaces in Greenpoint. She visits The Garden more than once a day and can be found at Cafecito Bogota and Champion Coffee typing away at the computer (shout out to Oscar). Brooklyn Label is a brunch favorite, and YMCA was her fitness hangout till all the good instructors left, and of course there are plenty to find at the dollar stores.
Emily will be showing her new works in the fall at Priska Juschka. Exciting!

This concludes our Greenpoint Artist Profile, if any of you out there are artists working in the neighborhood, shout me out!

  6. Police Activity on Manhattan Avenue

    April 27, 2009 by Justine

As soon as I stepped off the G train at India just a few minutes ago I saw Manhattan Avenue closed off with heavy police activity. I ran into my girl Emily Rawlings and she wondered what was going on as did a lot of other people. What I’ve been able to dig up thus far:

A guy in a stolen car was being chased by police down Manhattan Avenue when he ran over and killed a woman in her twenties dragging her down to Dupont. The Avenue is closed from Java through what appears to be to the end, like Ash or Box. There is heavy police activity with more detectives than I’ve seen on a Law and Order episode. This is just horrible.

Any other info, feel free to comment or email me. I didn’t take any pictures with all the police around so if anyone has shots, feel free to send them to me and I will update this post.

My heart goes out to this woman and her family. I’ll keep my ears and eyes open.

Update @ 6:20pm: Some more info via Gothamist:

An alert came over the newswire not long ago regarding an accident investigation at Manhattan Avenue and India Street in Greenpoint, where at least one victim has been transported to Bellevue Hospital. A reader has just sent in the above photo, and we’re hearing rumors that “the driver of one of the vehicles struck a woman on Huron Street and was fleeing the scene, and caused this pile up. From what the police were saying, it appears that the woman in critical condition at this scene was an occupant of one of the cars on the bottom of the pile.”

Update @ 6:45pm: Another image via reader Keith Adams:

I couldn’t help but think that she might have a husband, boyfriend, partner etc who is at work and doesn’t even know that she is dead. Very sad.

The update mentions that the victim might have been in one of the cars but that is not the case because when I was buying some pet food at Pets On The Run the guy there told me he saw her land in front of his store.

She was hit at the corner of India and flew nearly all the way down to Huron – the length of about 9 storefronts.

He told me that she was in really, really bad shape.

    Such a tragedy.

    Update @ 7:05pm: From reader Dave -

Hey – I would hate to spread rumors regarding the crime scene on Manhattan Ave, so please know this is unconfirmed info. I live on Eagle Street and after being dropped off by the B61 running on an abridged schedule due to “policy activity” I stopped into the bodega on Green and Manhattan Ave. The worker at the bodega told me a PREGNANT woman was struck and killed up near CTown. The driver fled in his car down Manhattan Ave, shooting at police and eventually losing control and crashing into the pictured SUV at Dupont Ave. If this is the case I am truly sickened for that woman’s family. ///dave

I sincerely hope that this is not the case. An already awful tragedy made just that much awful would really be too much.

From what I’ve gathered so far – all of it just really neighborhood snippets at this point – it seems that a stolen car that was being chased by the cops hit a young woman somewhere around India & Huron. The driver then lost control of the white minivan and crashed into parked cars along Manhattan Ave at Dupont. I pray that it was not a pregnant woman. And this is also the first time I’m hearing about shots being fired. But Laura Hofmann sent out the following email and photos via the CB1 list mentioning there was a shooting near Nassau Avenue today as well, so I’m wondering if these are related incidents?

I came home from school to learn that there had been a shootout on Nassau Ave. A car chase down Manhattan Ave. A young girl hit & killed. And three cars piled onto each other across from my building.

The captain of the 94th can stand on his head from now until doomsday and he won’t convince me that there’s no crime problem happening in Greenpiont. We’re not even half way through 2009 and Greenpoint has a long list of problems going on!

Update @ 7:27pm: The Gazette is reporting now:

Here at the Gazette office we’ve been following this story for hours. Our own Khristina has been on the phone with DCPI all afternoon trying to figure out what really happened. We’ve been to both crime scenes, so check out our blog for details. We will update the post as more information comes in:

    http://www.greenpointnews.blogspot.com/

    Update 4.28.09 @ 10:30am

ABC News has picked up the story a little and identifies the woman killed as 37 year old Violetta Krzyzak and says the Dodge Caravan was stolen from Jackson Street.

The Daily News also ran an article. They state Violetta as a 38 year old Polish immigrant and mother from Huron Street. The driver is being identified as Jose Maldonado but there’s no information on why unmarked cop vehicles were chasing him.

I’d be surprised if just a stolen minivan sparked a police chase by detectives unless they were right there when it happened. Clearly there would be a reason for that… It also seems no one else has heard about a shooting on Nassau Avenue that I can find. This story has a really tragic ending but I just get the feeling there has to be more to this than just a stolen car.

The New York Post chimes in and reports that the driver is from Manhattan. And also that he suffered a broken toe. God damn piece of shit deserves a broken neck.

  8. Beer Tasting!

    by Justine

As some of you might know, I work for the YMCA. Not the Greenpoint branch, but the McBurney branch on 14th St in the city. The YMCA is a non-profit and does various fundraisers and events throughout the year to raise money for all the good work they do with kids. But this event is the one I am looking forward to the most.

    REV_Beer-Tasting

This Beer Tasting 101 consists of all the beer and hors d’œuvre you can stuff in your piehole from 6:30pm-8pm on Wednesday May 13th at Heartland Brewery in Union Square.

    1. This is the perfect happy hour event after work. Get all your office buddies to come!
    2. This is still a breeze to get home from. The L train is right across the street.
    3. It’s $35 – all you can drink & eat for an hour and a half with the profits going to charity. You can drink and eat like a piggy and say it’s all for charity!
    4. If you mention you heard it from me here on Greenpointers you will get a shiny new Heartland Brewery pint glass. Ooooo, ahhhhh!

No other reasons needed – call 212.912.2300 right now, credit card handy and tell them you want to register for the Beer Tasting 101 event. If you’re the type that hates to call, you can email me directly (jcarroll [at] ymcanyc [dot] org) your information and I’ll process it personally.

  10. The Baby Pigeons Live On My Fire Escape!

    April 26, 2009 by Justine

All the jokes you’ve heard about never seeing baby pigeons can finally be put to rest, especially for me. There are baby pigeons living on my fire escape!

    Baby Pigeons

    Baby Pigeons

Now, granted these couple of shots aren’t exactly the best but I’m no urban nature photographer and I don’t want to piss off the parental units so that I get shit on for the next decade.
