It’s baaaaaaack! The 2009 Brooklyn version of restaurant week has returned. From Monday March 24th through Thursday April 2nd Dine in Brooklyn will offer $23.00 for a three course meal and new this time around is Brunch offerings are two for $23.00. And there are even some restaurants that are offering lunch and dinner options for the two-fer deal. Keep in mind this does not include beverages, tax or tip.
So what Greenpoint joints are participating? Participating in the classic deal is Coco 68 Restaurant and Lokal Mediterranean Bistro (WRONGLY listed in Williamsburg, but I imagine Lokal did that themselves. Asshats.), but two Polish restaurants – Krolewskie Jadlo (that joint with the knights out front) and Karczma (the one with the chicks in peasant-y outfits) are offering the two for $23.00 deal.
Williamsburg of course is offering many more options including the Japanese Brasserie Zenkichi, DeStefano’s Steakhouse and the place of many a childhood meals for me (birthdays, anniversaries, family gatherings, after funerals, etc.) Bamonte’s.
You can view a pdf of all the restaurants participating (and there are a lot!) here.

Drinkin’ and Dronin’ praises brunch at the Greenpoint Coffee House. So does OffManhattan. And I can’t say I disagree – hands down my favorite brunch place in the neighborhood. – Drinkin’ and Dronin’
The New York Times has an interesting story on Greenpoint photographer Anders Goldfarb including a fantastic slideshow of a dozen of his shots. “In 1998, Mr. Goldfarb began photographing in Williamsburg and Greenpoint, riding his bike around the area and looking for the peculiar beauty of vinyl siding, peeling paint and razor wire. Using filters to reveal the cumulus clouds on beautiful sunny days, he brought a sense of clarity and order to photographs of abandoned gas stations and burned-out buildings.” Props to my old friend Skee in the photo below! – The City Visible
Speaking of photography, Shooting Brooklyn has this GREAT Greenpoint shot that I am in love with. – Shooting Brooklyn
Last weekend was the end for Jan and Äya which I cannot say surprises me one tiny bit. It was cute but I’d really like to see Greenpoint stay away from ultra expensive stores with three things inside. But even more importantly, what will be there next?! – Racked

Brooklyn Bowl is finally coming to town next month! The Gutter is getting some competition. Once the only game in town for splits and spares, Brooklyn Bowl is going to step it up. “When it opens, Brooklyn Bowl will offer a diverse Blue Ribbon menu, local craft beer on draft, frozen Margaritas, entertainment, which will include live music and stand-up comedy by top acts and a bowling alley with an airy beer garden atmosphere that will charge affordable prices and open in the afternoon and stay open late.” This is making me happy. – Greenpoint Gazette
Although today’s snow is no indication that it’s the first day of Spring, Dalaga is having a “Here Comes The Sun” sale starting Saturday with 10% off all skirts and tops. In addition they’re going to be carrying ladies only gear from now on so any remaining men’s items are a whopping 75% off. – Dalaga Newsletter
Although it’s not in Greenpoint, LIC is mighty close and Water Taxi Beach is da bomb, but maybe you’re feeling a little more fancy schmancy? Enter the Long Island City boutique hotel rooftop. “There’ll be cabanas, frozen drinks, unparalleled views of the Queensboro Bridge, and a menu of “gourmet” fish tacos, mini-burritos, and lamb sliders, all under a retractable roof. Converted trolley cars will pick up partyers from nearby subway stations. As if all this weren’t enough, a smaller roof deck will serve as an outdoor movie theater.” Wow. – Grub Street
Miss Emily Farris may have moved from New York but she’s coming back to do a cooking class at Brooklyn Kitchen next month. Cooking for Broke Dummies will show you how to make at least five dinners for under $5 each. – Brooklyn Kitchen
There is some high flying action going on in Williamsburg next week. STREB dance company’s opening show on March 27 titled “Catapult” will feature “whizzing gizmos, flying trapezes, rooftop jumps, and revolving 20-foot floors”. Tickets are just $20 for adults and $10 for the kids. – Brooklyn Paper

Funding Emerging Arts with Sustainable Tactics (FEAST) is an ingenious project. It seamlessly combines the joys of art and food by hosting public dinners designed to raise money for artistic projects. It’s run by a group of individuals sharing a vortex of skills and is hosted by The Lutheran Church of the Messiah across the street from McGolrick Park.
Basically, you pay a sliding scale fee to enter, eat some amazing food prepared by Molly and David, and vote on a number of submitted proposals by artists working in a variety of creative disciplines. At the end of the evening the votes and monies are counted and the artist with the most votes receives the bag of cash. The proposal is to be realized by at the next FEAST event.
I attended the first FEAST dinner a few weeks back and had a blast helping out washing dishes and chopping garlic. I chatted and mingled with a few of about eighty guests that attended, ate some amazing soup and veggies and dessert made by Tracy of Sweet Tooth of the Tiger, freaked out in my indecisiveness in getting the vote in, drank some beer, and met some really awesome people.
The proposal with the most votes was submitted by Dan Funderburgh who plans to take the $700 plus that was raised to “beautify north Brooklyn with renegade wallpapering.” Watch out for mailboxes and garbage cans clad in ornate decorative patterns.
I was so proud to be involved in such a community-consciousness-raising endeavor and I know this is sprucing your appetite to be involved too. No matter if you’re a cook, an artist, or munching speculator, there is room for everyone to participate.
Submit your proposal ASAP as the deadline is this Saturday March 21st. Submission guidelines can be found here. FEAST is also looking for volunteers to help in all parts of the organization process, more info here.
The next event will be help Saturday April 4th at The Church of Messiah on 129 Russell Street, no rsvp required, no one turned away, make sure to bring all your friends and vote to show your support. I’ll be there with baked goods in tow and probably washing more dishes. More info on attending here.
You can join their facebook group here, listen to the wnyc coverage here, see pictures from the event here, and read my report on my blog here.
Four days of Music & Art in Greenpoint and Williamsburg? Sounds fucking awesome!
On behalf of The L Magazine, we’re psyched to announce the first annual Northside Festival, four days of live music showcases and art exhibitions taking over Williamsburg and Greenpoint this June. I’ve provided a press release below, and we’ll be announcing new details on the Northside site over the next couple of weeks.
The L Magazine Announces the First Annual Northside Festival: a Four-Day Celebration of Music & Art in Brooklyn
This June 11-14, The L Magazine will host the first annual Northside Festival, a four-day celebration of Brooklyn’s independent music and art scenes at over fifty venues throughout Williamsburg and Greenpoint.
The L Magazine will produce a number of shows, but Northside is primarily a collaborative event, and we’re giving dozens of New York music industry influencers curatorial control over their own showcases, featuring the artists they think you should be listening to. Over 30 record labels, blogs, radio stations, and independent promoters will be presenting, including Brooklyn Vegan, Gothamist, Frenchkiss Records, WFUV, Kanine Records, and many more. Bands and other showcase presenters will be announced over the next few weeks on northsidefestival.com.
Northside has also teamed up with the Williamsburg Gallery Association to plan art exhibitions and events throughout the weekend. Exhibits and receptions have been announced at AG Gallery, 3rd Ward, and Art 101.
The Northside Festival will kick off with an opening night party, featuring live performances, special guests, and much, much more. Stay tuned to northsidefestival.com for updates and announcements.
