  1. The Empire Strikes Back

    February 26, 2009 by Justine

From the inbox this morning, there’s major news in Cody’s Greenpoint empire.

Want to let you know that Brooklyn Label is almost done with it’s re-vamping. Here is what we have to say:

New hours, new menu… same great attitude at Brooklyn Label. We are now open weeknights for dinner, until 9 pm. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, we are still open until 10pm. We’ve also added a healthy selection of vegan and vegetarian items to the dinner menu, and there’s more to come. The coffee and espresso drinks are still the best, and it’s still a very cool place to hang out.

Over at Papacitos we are planning a May 5th Opening of the Garden with a big festive party! Papacitos has great new Specials Nightly, a daily Taco Special for only $1.50 with Tecates only $2. In addition, starting May 5th Papacitos Goes LATE NIGHT!! Delivery will be available from MIDNIGHT – 5AM!!! Check out papacitosbrooklyn.blogspot.com for all the new delivery details.

And finally Brooklyn Standard is hiring Locals! Look at the site for a updated profile, opening date, and email info for JOBS!! Fighting un-employment at a local level.

Although I’m still not ready to deal with Brooklyn Label – I was in there not but two weeks ago to grab coffee and a bagel to go and it was like a fifteen minute ordeal and I was the only person there. But, I am going to promise to have a little more patience and go there again, one day.

Papacito’s on the other hand is pretty great. Quick delivery – and the dude even trekked up the five flights to bring it to my door. The burritos are really good and in just a couple of months they’re going to be delivering until 5am (seriously?!). Wow.

Taking a closer look at the Brooklyn Standard blog, the latest post describes Cody’s latest joint as the new standard for the local bodega.

Brooklyn Standard Deli LLC is a natural foods Grocery, Bakery, Convenience Mart, and Eatery. It is the new standard for the “Bodega”: giving the neighborhood what it needs. Everything you love about your local Bodega: smokes, soda, cheap eats, egg on a roll, deli sandwiches, news paper and magazines, late night munchies.

Beginning April 1st, 2009 all of this, and more, can be experienced 7 days a week from 7 am to 11 pm at Brooklyn Standard’s 1400 sq. foot locally and artistically customized space at 188 Nassau Ave., at Jewel and Humboldt.

Brooklyn Standard sounds awesome (and what a pretty chandelier!). And around the corner from where I grew up, nonetheless. I’m kinda missing my old side of the Point. Especially with all the new things popping up over there.

  2. Noble Street Fire

    by Justine

Another email in the inbox this morning, this one from Jennifer about a fire on Noble last night.

Amazing to me that this fire didn’t make it to any news story I saw last night or this morning, just this quick blurb on Fox news.

MYFOXNY.COM – More than two dozen firefighters battled flames on top of a building on Noble Street in Brooklyn. It happened Wednesday afternoon in he Greenpoint section. There was no immediate word on the cause. So far, no injuries were reported.

It didn’t look like there was much damage outside that particular building, which was good, but it was a stinky fire, I live on Milton and could smell it inside my house when I got home around 5pm last night.

Happy to hear no one was hurt and there didn’t appear to be any damage.

  5. Are Greenpointers Racist?

    February 24, 2009 by Justine

The Production Lounge owner cries racism at Greenpointers.

Now of course every blog within the walls of 11222 claims that is absurd, but I’m not as quick to disagree. Just as much as I don’t want the gun-toting Euro-mafia partyers at Club Exit, I don’t want thugmaster flexes at Production Lounge. They’re both bringing an element to the neighborhood that doesn’t fit.

From a locals point of view, Greenpoint has never been a neighborhood with a black community. Most of the only black people I had interaction with growing up were the kids from Cooper Projects who were zoned for PS 110 and JHS 126. Other than that, there were no black kids in the neighborhood. Does that make Greenpoint racist? No, but it definitely breeds a majority of less than tolerable folks. The fact is, there are many people in this neighborhood who voted for Obama, but at the same time would have an issue with a large group of black men hanging around outside their local bar. Personally, I’m an equal opportunity hater, regardless of race or creed, I probably don’t like you.

The owner makes a valid point that there are other bars in the vicinity that have fights, loiterers and such. And the fact that the 94th claims that the absurdly bright spaceship lights that are parked outside Production Lounge are “protocol after a shooting”, there were NEVER those lights parked outside of Club Exit after their shooting last year. I’m just sayin’…

  6. Blog Buzz: Paloma Takes The Robo Train Outta Here

    by Justine

The new Miss Brooklyn is actually from Brooklyn this year, go figure. And she’s a pretty mittle Irish lass from Manhattan Beach. – The Brooklyn Paper

Hayden-Harnett names a cork wedge shoe after Greenpoint. They’re cute, too! – via Lui’s Picks

Metro has an article featuring Lily Lee who owns Xtra (now called Bang for the Buck), the discount store that was displaced by WaMu late last year. With the WaMu branch now closed, Lily gets the last laugh. – Metro

Lookie, lookie here. Studio B re-opens. What a shocker. Well, technically they never even closed. – Grub Street

This seems to put the nail in the coffin on the idea of Paloma coming back after the fire there on Election Night. Camille Bacerra is moving to the city. “A name hasn’t been decided on yet, but there is talk of calling it Paloma Orchard Street, since her involvement is increasing and all collaborating parties are happy with each other.” Boo! – BlackBook

Today marked the first day of the Robo-L-Train. I was riding with Krista today and she let me in on the fact that there was no man driving our train this morning. But it seems the Robo-Train is only during off peak times – for now. The Daily News

Today is also Mardi Gras and Paczki Day! So don’t forget to pick up your pączki donut thingys at virtually EVERY Polish deli or bakery in the neighborhood.

This Sunday March 1st is the Town Square‘s Spring SchoolFEST taking place at John Ericsson MS 126 (424 Leonard St).

“SchoolFEST is a school fair involving all schools and child service organizations in Greenpoint & Williamsburg (private & public, day care to high school). It’ll be an informative and fun day for parents/kids (and educators & service providers) to learn about what’s available for our kids in our neighborhood. There’ll be literature & representatives from the schools, performances showcasing music and other programs offered by the schools, interactive activities for kids and more. And for those parents with kids about to enter Pre-K or Elementary this fall (like me), it’s a perfect time to educate ourselves about our choices.”

  9. The Magic Is Gone

    February 19, 2009 by Justine

As per a commenter’s tip, Crain’s is reporting that the Magic Johnson financed condo project at 110 Green Street is bankrupt.

A 130-unit building in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, declares bankruptcy. The property’s lenders include basketball star Magic Johnson.

The company is the owner of 110 Green Street Development, a six-story luxury condo in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, called The Viridian. Sales of its 130 units began in June. In the filing the company noted that the Viridian’s construction coincided with an unprecedented decline in the real estate market generally, and in Williamsburg and Greenpoint specifically.

According to the filing, the developer is now following an increasingly popular path by converting the Viridian’s units from condos to rental apartments. The company also revealed that it has had talks with Citi-Spaces Real Estate Services about marketing the apartments and with Fannie Mae and other lenders about possible financing. The developer expects to generate rental revenue shortly.

I already heard that the condo went pretty much rental, but now with the official bankruptcy does this mean it might go bottom dollar? Or even worse, sit unoccupied and become a blight?
