Quickie: Out With the Old, In With the New

An open letter from the owner of Luna Lounge and the (coming soon) new bar Satellite Lounge.

Hey friends of Luna,

Many people have written me asking about Luna Lounge. Basically, what happened is that when I opened the new club in Williamsburg, I was unable to get enough shows on a regular basis. When the Knitting Factory expressed an interest in working out an arrangement with me I decided to accommodate their interest.

I still own the name Luna Lounge (with my old partner, Dianne) and am interested in finding another space in which to work with bands. If I find an appropriate location, you guys will be the first to know.

In the meantime, I will soon be opening a new bar called The Satellite Lounge on Havemeyer Street in Williamsburg. My good friend, Dave Ellis is my new partner.
The Satellite Lounge will hold about 60-75 people. You’ll be able to hear plenty of current indie rock as well as lots of favorite older stuff from many of the previous music scenes from the last twenty years. It will not have ‘live’ music… We will be doing CD listening parties, birthday events, and be open seven days per week.
2008 was a tough one. Let’s make the new year more enjoyable.

I’ll let you know when we have an opening date in the next few weeks.

Best wishes,
Rob Sacher

A Heated Discussion

Yesterday morning I found a note on the kitchen floor that was apparently slipped under my door. It was from the tenant directly below me.

Your radiator is leaking through my ceiling and it’s going to fall
down!! Can you shut off your radiator before it falls through my ceiling?! Call
Tommy the Super to fix it!

I’m a great neighbor. I never have loud parties at my place, I lower my music after 10pm and I pretty much don’t bother with anyone. But stupidity like this just aggravates me.

First off, if my radiator is leaking through to your apartment first and foremost you should be on the horn to the Super immediately. Clearly if the thing looks like it is going to “fall through the ceiling” (dramatic, much?) then I somehow doubt this is the first time you’ve noticed this.

Secondly, I’m supposed to “shut my radiator off”? So I’m supposed to simply freeze my tits off because there’s a problem with it? I shouldn’t maybe try and see what that problem is?

And finally, why are you telling me to call the super? Do I look like your fucking secretary? Are your fingers fucking broke?

Regardless, since I am neither stupid, lazy or inept at taking care of myself – I called the Super. He came while I was at work, simply tightened the thingamabob with a wrench and all is leak-free.

People really need to learn how to fucking take care of themselves. The Astrals ain’t exactly The Plaza and shit breaks. Regularly. But the Super is fantastic and takes care of things in a timely matter – the only thing is, you have to actually TELL him when something is wrong. And not in a snotty, bitchy way that you’re probably accustomed to speaking to people on the fucking internet, but in a nice, respectful way that indicates you’re not a total asshole.

And in the event that you’re reading this – I suggest you DO call Tommy and ask him to look at your ceiling because that radiator might have been leaking since last century and your ceiling might really actually fall down.

I’m not kidding.

Solid Gold

I moved out of Greenpoint for a few months and then moved back to a house a block away from my old apartment.

Everything seems relatively unchanged. Five Leaves and Lokal are still here as are the dueling Rite Aids and my favorite fruit stand. But as I walked Manhattan Avenue this weekend, I spotted a new, fabulous gem (no pun intended): Bejeweled. I’m sure you all bought all your little sisters stocking stuffers there this holiday season, but for me, this discovery felt like Christmas day. We are talking rows and rows of earrings and necklaces in what I would classify as the best cheap jewelry store I have ever had the luxury of laying eyes upon.

As I perused the gilded aisles I found numerous items for purchase: little rose earrings, an ice cream cone necklace and a pair of gloves. I felt like I was back in 6th grade, had just been handed my allowance and was headed to Claire’s at the Alderwood mall. Bejeweled is every girl’s inner middle-schooler’s fantasy. I have been back several times and have spent a total of $30.00 there, which is hard to do because everything is so cheap. Next time you are thinking about renting The Notebook or Pretty Woman, I would advise you to take that $3.50 and hit up Bejeweled instead. Its seriously the gift that keeps on giving.

Darts Revisited

I spent a lot of last year trying to get a dart league started within Greenpoint & Williamsburg to no avail but I did wind up getting hooked up with a great guy who runs the QDA – Queensborough Darts Association. Thanks to him I’m currently playing in a Thursday Mixed League for Connie O’s. As luck would have it, I knew half my dart team as a kid. That’s Greenpoint for you!

The reason for my post is to encourage any local bars or people who want to play in the Spring League. Registration is under way NOW, so just get in touch with Anthony and your bar could have a dart team up and running in a few weeks. With Connie O’s and Mulholland’s, there only needs to be a few more bars within Greenpoint & Williamsburg for him to make a separate league just for us. But even if we don’t get enough to break off just yet, your bar can still sign up and play in nearby Queens neighborhoods like Sunnyside and Astoria.

If you or your bar is interested, contact Anthony Eugenia at queensdarts {at}yahoo {dot} com.

New Bar Alert!

I’ve been wondering what’s going to go down in this space on the Ave and Refinery29 has the scoop. A new bar from the people who own Oak.

Last week we caught up with Louis Terline and Jeff Madalena, the two guys behind refinery fave, Oak. A pretty fruitful convo, actually, as we got the inside scoop on some pretty exciting news. The duo told us they’re planning on opening up a bar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, in the former Staropolski Meat Market & Deli space. As for the rest of the details, we have very little (so far, we’ll be sure to keep you posted though)… something about plans for a very raw, simple space, set to open sometime this spring.

The Standard

Last week I saw Cody Utzman back at Brooklyn Label. Which actually explains why it was a mob scene for brunch. And he’s still got Papacito’s popping. And now it seems he’s in for a Greenpoint trifecta with The Standard. Rumor has it, it’s on the other side of The Point near Nassau & Jewel. Here’s part of his open letter to the neighborhood:

Dear Neighbors,

My name is Cody Utzman. I am a chef, a business owner, and, perhaps most importantly, a Greenpoint resident.

As I prepared to write this letter, my team and I struggled to find a word that summed up The Standard, our latest venture. With an in-house bakery, top of the line espresso drinks, fresh food, and shelves filled with local products, it’s hard to know where to start. Not to mention our efforts to be socially responsible as an employer and member of the Greenpoint community, and our decision to be eco-friendly. Our discussion highlighted for me the distinctiveness of our approach to business. What we’re offering with The Standard, goes far beyond what’s in the store.

Going green, for us, is about more than just limiting our carbon footprint. No knocks against granola, organic cotton, or natural cleaning products–in fact, you’ll find all of them prominently displayed–but our hope for green business is that it can be less about advocating a particular lifestyle and more about developing sustainable ways of serving our community. As our name suggests, we aspire to set a new standard for business practice, while maintaining high standards for our food, coffee and other products.

Update 1/16/09: The Standard is going to be a small grocery/general store opening mid-February. And they’re looking for local homemade goods to include on their shelves.

Blog Buzz: Amour-less & Bodega-Ful

Well, the fucking Giants lost and football is now officially dead to me. Time to focus on the Rangers.

When one restaurant closes, another one opens. Or so it seems on Franklin Street. River Barrel opened on New Years Day and it seems that Casa Mon Amour is closing it’s doors. I’m not a fan of French food and so when Beatrice changed her menu from Dominican to French, I stopped ordering. But Beatrice was a lovely woman and a fantastic hostess. – Neighborhood Threat

Mmmmm, sexy Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are filming around town for Sherlock Holmes. – Gothamist

Eater has a plywood report on the old Polish knick-knack store. It was kind of like a tourist place to pick up souvenirs from Greenpoint for Polish people. And it carried stuff from Poland. They moved (more appropriately) to Nassau Avenue. But in it’s place there is now plywood surrounding it. No idea what’s going to go here but evidently something is! – Eater

I don’t really get over to the other side of Greenpoint that often which is ironic since I grew up on that side and almost never came to this side when I was a kid. But there’s an adorable (seriously, look at that pic!) little vegan sandwich shop on Kingsland & Beadel called Boneshakers. I’m not a vegan and even I’m tempted to check it out. – via NYPress

And in even more restaurant news, Ichiran Ramen is going to open as a “Members Only” place. This is old news and I probably should’ve been a more pro-active blogger and snagged one of the applications but yeah, well, I’m not that person. – Grub Street

You never get to use that Master in Fine Arts degree you got? Well why not make a charity Valentine for Fred Flare? – Racked

I have the urge to take after this blogger and read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, too, now. “The first chapter was filled with the likes of Grand, Graham, Manhattan, Devoe, Metropolitan, Ainslie not to mention the park by my house, the local school, our library, the old Greenpoint hospital.” I feel like a bad Brooklynite for not knowing this. – An Apple a Day

Oh and I nearly forgot to mention Real World Brooklyn debuted and yeah, I’m kinda not thrilled with it but I will watch it. They seem so goody-goody. I am kinda digging on Ryan, though. And Top Chef New York (BROOKLYN!!) is more than fulfilling my local reality tv needs. – MTV & Bravo

To me, this is brilliance and I seriously, seriously wish I thought of it. Hyperbodega. From Gothamist:

A couple of “enterprising hipsters in Brooklyn” have launched the latest in late night delivery services, called HyperBodega. The NY Times reports on Abe Jellinek and Keron Richardson’s venture, which offers 7 day/week delivery, from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. They’ll bring “beer, cigarettes, condoms, plantain chips, cat food and other such items directly to doorsteps in Greenpoint, Williamsburg and Bushwick.” When an order comes in one of the men runs out to a bodega, picks up the goods and delivers them—charging a fee based on what is ordered.

Totally fucking brill.

Greenpoint & Williamsburg parents – you’re getting your blog on, huh? – Two Hours til Naptime
