  1. River Barrel New Years Day Brunch

    December 31, 2008 by Justine

Just a quickie here from reader J:

Thanks Justine for blogging about our new place River Barrel. I hope everyone has gotten a chance to see that the new sign, with the proper spelling of the restaurant and the phone number is up and ready to go for opening day tomorrow! We will be open for brunch at 10am and hope everyone in the neighborhood joins us to celebrate the new year in a brand new restaurant.

Last night we had a small get together to celebrate Mrs. Kim, one of the owners birthday, and many local business owners joined us; David and Bret of Wine Cellar Sorbets, Mary and Mark of Kill Devil Hill, Michele of Dalaga, Tommy and Roy of Alter, among others. I will be adding the pictures to our new Facebook page later tonight. Thanks to all the locals who have been showing support to us in this new endeavor, including yourself, we hope to see everyone tomorrow on opening day!

I’m going to try my best to make it to their opening day brunch tomorrow, however first we’ll see how tonight goes… I may not be functioning enough to handle brunch!

  4. New Years Eve in Greenpoint

    December 23, 2008 by Justine

Christmas is already upon us but it’s just a hop to New Years Eve, so what’s going on in the hood?

For family and friends fun look no further than the First Annual New Years Eve Countdown Party at St. Cecilia’s. Bring your friends, food and brews to hangout with the rest of the nabe and dance to the Parties On Point DJs.

Redstar is throwing a New Years Eve bash sure to the party of the ‘Point. And I imagine this one will rock right up until 4am. $75 open bar and buffet – enough said. Call 718-349-0149 for tickets.

Something low key more your style? Zenkichi is a modern Japanese restaurant at 77 N 6th St and would be perfect for a romantic New Year Eve dinner before hitting your parties or opt for the second seating and have a midnight toast to ring in the new year.

Zenkichi will offer a prix fixe New Year’s Eve Omakase to bring in 2009 in unique style. Winter delicacies such as cod milt and blue fin toro will appear on the special menu. See more details about the menu here.

The Richardson has a classy little shindig in mind. If you’ve been dying to wear that knockout holiday dress but afraid you’d be the only one dressed to the nines, here’s your chance to mingle among the decked out patrons of The Richardson.

We will be open regular hours on the afternoon of New Year’s Eve. For the evening’s festivities we will NOT be charging a cover and we WILL be serving bubbly abound as the clock strikes 12! In return, all we ask is that you gussy yourself up to the nines, and ring in ’09 in style! Grab friends and make them dress up all proper-like, too!

We are not talking tails & gowns here, but you should really look as damn good as you know you can (it’s New Year’s!!).

Public Assembly is throwing the only 24 hour party I know of within walking distance! This one is for the hardcores and lovers of Greenpoint’s very own glam rockers Semi-Precious-Weapons who will be performing. Gee, I know where my girl Krissy will be! ;)

I’m sure more options will pop up this week so if you’ve heard of a good local place to party for NYE shoot me an email and I’ll post it.

  6. Eat, Drink & Shop in Greenpoint

    December 21, 2008 by Justine

The Greenpoint Merchants Association is alive!

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the newly formed Greenpoint Merchant’s Association and this week Gina of Zaya’s Appliances emailed their great holiday ad featuring all the sponsors such as The Garden, Greenpoint Travel, Wizard Electronics, Saporo Haru and more.

She also mentioned that finally, the NYC Clean Streets have gone into effect!

Hi! Here is the final ad for the Greenpoint Business Association and if you haven’t noticed BID started cleaning the streets this past Monday. They are doing Manhattan Ave and some of Nassau. Merry Christmas!!! Gina

It would be great to see additional businesses join in so please feel free to email greenpointbiz [at] gmail [dot] com to inquire about the Greenpoint Business Association.

  8. The Lights Are… Blue?

    Yeah, it’s kinda weird, no?

The Manhattan Avenue Christmas light decorations I have been talking about for the last month aka The Scrooged Series – lol – has a new chapter. First we heard that The Greenpoint Lions weren’t going to be able to do it this year due to minimal cooperation from the stores along the Avenue, but then Town Square swooped in and saved the day.

Now, it’s not nice to look a gift horse in the mouth but why are they blue? To quote blogger Voodoo Jive:

First of all, the lights are blue, not white. So it looks like one huge very lame and cheaply-thrown together Hannukah celebration up and down Manhattan Avenue, which if anyone who lives there knows is hilarious, because the majority of the native Polish population of the hood (we’re talking pre-hipster move-in) are…how can I say this? Anti-semitic is too harsh (and not altogether accurate), however the vibe is definitely Catholic or Polish Christian Orthodox, and I have heard many of the Polish people make a point to say “this person is a Jew, etc…” in THAT way.

I have to admit, VJ hit the nail on the head with this one. The Poles and locals I’ve spoken to are perturbed about the blue lights. Why aren’t they green and red? Or even the originally promised white? I understood they were going to be a lighter version of our previous years which was fine, but the blue is ridiculous.

    Ridiculous.

  9. The River ____

    by Justine

I received a comment from a reader this week on one of my posts from back in October on that new restaurant at the corner of Kent & Franklin.

The nice Korean man is the owner. The restaurant will be called “The River Barrel”. My husband, also a Greenpointer, is the new chef working hard at the New American menu that will hopefully be debuting in the next 2 weeks! Full Bar and late night menu to boot!

A couple of quick shots I took in October of the interior with the owners consent:

Very exciting stuff to hear that a local chef will be taking the reins on this new joint. I’m thrilled to see what’s in store. The work being done on the place seems top notch, the people nice and it will be great having another dining option in the neighborhood. Especially in the winter when one isn’t in the mood to troop over to BBurg but still needs to get out of the house.

The name thing is confusing since I was under the impression it was called River Barrel but their newly added signage indicates River Ballel. I guess we’ll find out soon enough! Thanks J.
