  1. Mischief, Zombies & Edible Corpses

    It’s Mischief Night!

Mischief Night was big when I lived in Staten Island. We’d go around suburbia stealing lawn ornaments and toilet papering houses. I’d never heard of it before I moved there, but I’m sorta glad I hadn’t. Two nights of Greenpoint debauchery would have been too much.

But tomorrow is the big night. Halloween on a Friday! There will be parties and freaks flowing throughout the ‘hood. Here’s a few things that’ll be going on:

    Hayden-Harnett:
Will be giving away door prizes every half hour from 4-8pm and everything in the store is 20% off to boot!

    ——————————————————-

    The Diamond Bar:
4-6pm Little tots and parents Halloween private party.
The bar is open but be warned, there will be toddlers ruling the place for these two hours

    8pm Zombie Crawl
I got makeup for you last minute zombie wanna bees. $3 pints for zombies until 9pm when you hobble to the Black Rabbit and others for continued mayhem.

    10pm Sets from DJ Antimagic
Ted McGrath and Marcia Cahill will spin all night. Let’s shoot to get everyone dancing by 11:30!

    ——————————————————–

    Cafe Grumpy:
The Hoodies, Wheelies & Movies continues with a screening of (one of my personal favorites) Donnie Darko starting at 7pm. Patrick Swayze into kiddie porn – what more can I say?!

    ———————————————————

    Greenpoint Zombie Crawl
    $3 pints for all Zombies!
Zombie’s cluster at The Diamond, 8pm-9pm.
    Black Rabbit, 9pm-10pm
    t.b.d., 10pm-11pm
    The Mark Bar, 11pm-12pm

    ——————————————————–

And for the lady Zombies – aspire to be a ZILF! Join Paul Booth at Duff’s in Brooklyn for Halloween. Paul will be presenting the 1st Annual MISS ZILF Beauty Pageant. A ZILF is sort of like a MILF but much colder and much hotter at the same time! So attention all Hot Zombie Chicks! Come on down to wear the crown. Cool prizes include everything from lots of free drinks to tattoo time! Finalists must be able to attend Paul’s Anniversary Party the next night for the final judging.

    ———————————————————

    The Habitat:
Habitat Halloween Party – $100 bucks to the first place costume and $50 to the runner up. Judging will be a midnight but the party starts at sundown with drink specials, a cornfield massacre, torture chambers and an edible corpse.

    ——————————————————–

    The Richardson:
DRINK, DEPRAVITY & all things GHOULISH – While we will not be participating in any sort of costume “contest,” per se, we invite everyone to gussy themselves up to the Gothic 9′s & come steppin’ out with us! As a special treat, in addition to our regular rotation of 1950′s R&B and Rock-n-Roll, there will be a one-night-only addition of HALLOWEEN HITS, such as MONSTER MASH & WEREWOLF WATUSI!

    ———————————————————

P.S. Shout out to my sister GG: Happy Birthday Bitch! I love you! ;)

  2. Update – Pic-Me- Betty

    October 28, 2008 by Justine

    Just a quick note…

Stopped by to see Betty a few days ago at Manhattan Avenue Cleaners and she was closing shop. She and her husband (name escapes me) and i were talking about her fame and fortune since her Pic-Me post! She said she’d has more customers (Woohoo!) and that business is doing well.

She also gave money to Saint Cecilia’s Gym as she was under the impression it was for the website?!…Either way it was sweet that she donated. That’s about it. Support local businesses!

  4. Raise The Roof!

    by Justine

Last weekend there was a fundraising event at St. Cecilia’s for the On-Point Cyclones basketball team which I’ve been mentioning here a lot since I was told about their desperate need for donations to keep the team’s practice space.

Since then the kids have been featured on Help me Howard and have received donations, but as you know in this hard economic time there’s never enough.

Right now, Rick is looking for someone to donate their time and expertise. The Gym’s roof needs fixing and they can’t afford it. Now we all know there are a lot of good, hardworking Greenpointers out there that probably have the skills to help out with this, so let’s get to it!

Hello, My name is Rick and I am in charge of fundraising for a non-profit sports program. We are in desperate need of our roof being fixed as we have to cancel games and anything going on each time it rains, and with the snow coming it will only get worse! Here is the deal:

We are On Point Cyclones basketball league. In the gym we have over 200 kids that play ball with us and we went undefeated in our 10 year olds last season. We are just about to start our season the weekend of November 2nd or 3rd, but our roof leaks. Not the whole roof, we are told the corners need to be built up because the water settles there. We have gotten prices that we cannot afford since we survive on donations and cannot afford a lot.

What we can offer is a banner of yours to go in our gym where over 200 families come each weekend to watch their kids play and a tax deduction that you donated the service. We are a legal non profit, and will supply a tax id for you.

So if anyone has it in their heart to give back to the community and has any experience in roofing or can donate a day to come down and fix it we would greatly appreciate it.

We have been featured on Channel 11 News at 10pm with Help Me Howard, but our roof is priority one now!

You can contact me directly at 347-723-4886.

Even if you aren’t a handyman (or woman) you can help the team out with a donation through PayPal on the On-Point Cyclones site here. Any and all donations are appreciated greatly!

  5. Ding-Dong The Ring Is Solved

    October 27, 2008 by Justine

A few weeks ago some readers left comments regarding a mysterious ‘ringing’ sound going on – but no one knew what it was.

Brooklyn Paper solved the mystery! And now I realize that I’ve been hearing it, too. It sounded like it was so close to my house that I thought for sure it couldn’t be what these people were talking about. But now that I know it’s from the sewer plant, it makes sense that it would sound like it was in my courtyard. So Astral people, that bell thing you hear is not in the building!!

  7. Let The River Run

    by Justine

On my way to my sisters to watch Sunday football I passed by 160 Franklin Street which I’ve been keeping a close eye on since I spotted activity over the Summer.

And today I spied them taking out the front gates and plywood to reveal this:

I apologize for the seriously crappy photos from my BlackBerry but hey, you get the idea! I spoke with a really cool Korean gentleman who told me the restaurant was basically all done inside (which it appears to be!) and will be open next month! The menu? “American with some vegetarian options.”

They’re registered under River Barrel Inc. so that might be the name of the place – I should’ve asked, but I’m not really up on my journalistic skills. Can’t wait to check it out either way!

  9. Fire at 804 Grand Street

    by Justine

Greenpointers reader Karina Lomelin just sent me this email and some pictures about a fire that happened this morning in Williamsburg.

There was a fire in the building right next to mine this morning. I live at 810 Grand in Williamsburg. As far as I know no one was hurt but the building is heavily damaged. I can hear them sawing and tearing things down. Some people are speculating foul play, but nobody knows what the cause was. Love your blog by the way.

Karina Loemlin’s photos can be seen here.

Thanks for the tip, Karina – I hope everyone is ok and it doesn’t affect your building!
