  1. Enid’s 6th Annual Apple Pie Bake-Off

    September 30, 2008 by Justine

This morning, tn the Greenpointers inbox from our favorite local librarian, Maria Falgoust:

    Enid’s 6th Annual Apple Pie Bake-Off!
Join us on Sunday, October 19th for Enid’s 6th Annual Apple Pie Bake-Off. Get your rolling pin out, apron on, and bake some test pies! The competition may be cute but their baking skills are fierce!
All pies are due at 6pm sharp. The categories are 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, Prettiest Pie, and Most Like Mom’s! Awesome prizes, such as a $50 gift certificate to Enid’s, a tailored “baker” gift set from Brooklyn Kitchen, plus trophies and bragging rights. After the judging, the winning pies will be announced and then everyone can sample all of the homemade pie they desire!

The 2008 panel of judges are: Brian Campbell is the sous-chef and husband of Elizabeth Stark, who baked last year’s winning pie. He has extensive experience tasting top-notch apple pies and is known the world over for his discriminating palate.

Emily Farris has never met a pulled pork sandwich she didn’t love. But she’s generally happy any time starch and fat end up in her mouth at the same time. Her first cookbook, “Casserole Crazy: Hot Stuff for Your Oven” was published by Penguin this fall and when she’s not cooking, eating or writing about cooking and eating she edits Nerve.com’s culture blog, Scanner. Find Emily at casserolecrazy.com.

Rob Sheffield is a music journalist who lives in Greenpoint. He is the author of “Love Is A Mix Tape,” which has been published in Swedish, Italian, French, German, Russian, Japanese and other languages he can’t read.

Harry Rosenblum is a co-owner of the Brooklyn Kitchen and the resident pie-guy.

Rachel Wharton is a senior online editor for Food & Wine, a former food writer for the New York Daily News and a graduate of the Master’s program in Food Studies from New York University. She also believes that Jameson is the ultimate palate cleanser for tasting apple pies.

Listen to the tunes of DJ Mr. Jonathan Toubin, of NewYorkNightTrain Turning over 200 gigs so far this year, the underground’s hardest-working, most prolific, and only full-time professional rock’n'soul DJ, New York Night Train conductor/soul proprietor Mr. Jonathan Toubin, can be found hard at work ’til the wee hours almost every night – filling dance floors in NYC and coast to coast with his dynamic 45 rpm sets – at weeklies such as Santos’ Party House’s Declassified!, Motor City Wednesday, Beauty Bar’s Boogaloo Shampoo, Home Sweet Home’s Shakin’ All Over Under Sideways Down, plus monthly institutions such as Glasslands Gallery’s Soul Clap and Dance-Off and Animal Train Happening. This in-demand floor-destroyer has, in only two years, permanently altered the sound and atmosphere of New York subcultural nightlife – replacing obvious hits, extended jams, and the typical collection of 1980s/1990s dance music genres and subgenres with a nightly narrative comprised of a unique selection of short energetic bursts of raw soul, punk, garage, freakbeat, New Orleans beat, French pop, British Invasion, glam, rockabilly, boogaloo, doowop, early R&B, and the latest underground and local recordings.

Tonight, for the third year in a row, Mr. Toubin, who took some of his first DJ baby steps at Enid’s and is currently curating the weekly DJs for their Thursday Thump party, provides the soundtrack for Enid’s Apple Pie Bakeoff. Mr. Toubin will recreate this timeless desert’s geographical evolution by spinning Dutch, English, and then American music – with an occasional sonic homage to the French varient, tarte tatin – spinning pleasant just-out-of-the-oven aromatic cinnamon steam to whet the appetite and, after the contest, graduating to the hyperactive brown sugar fix mix that he has become known for to get those full tummies on the dancefloor…

Extra special “fair style” food on a stick will be available for purchase.

  3. The Greenpoint 100: Submissions Extended

    by Justine

As per a comment on LL’s previous post about the Greenpoint 100 – submission deadline have been extended through October 3rd.

So if you missed the deadline but want to be involved, get cracking – you’ve got til Friday to get your artistic juices flowing.

  4. There Might Be a Worm in That Apple

    by Justine

On Friday Gothamist posted that Apple may have purchased the Williamsburg Salvation Army.

Today local Greenpoint blogger Citizen Skein of Musings on ‘point posted that it’s still in the hands of the Salvation Army – since 1974.

While I find it a lot more believable that Apple did not purchase 176 Bedford, I also wouldn’t put all my trust in the DOB updating their records with the quickness. I was an expediter for years and I’ve seen it take several weeks for things like this to be updated in BIS. Actually, I’m being kind – I’ve seen it take months for things to be entered in that system. Maybe they’ve gotten better, but if the news that 176 Bedford’s been sold is only a few days old I would bet my life that BIS wouldn’t have it updated for at least a couple of weeks.

With that said, Citizen Skein is probably right and it’s more than likely just a rumor that found its way to Gothamists inbox. But even if there is any truth at all to the Salvation Army selling that piece of property I sincerely don’t care what goes there. Whatever it is would be better than the eyesore that place is.

  6. Taking a Bite Out of Williamsburg

    by Justine

Gothamist: Did Apple Buy the Bedford Ave Salvation Army?

Our sources are telling us that Apple has purchased the building that currently houses the Salvation Army located at 176 Bedford Avenue (on the corner of Bedford and North 7th) in Williamsburg.

By the time I can afford to replace the iPod that a guy I hooked up with two weeks ago STOLE from me (Yes, I do realize I have the absolute worst taste in men. Ever.) maybe I’ll be able to walk to a place to purchase it.

Although I love my thrift shopping, that Salvation Army was ALWAYS one of the most disgusting ones around. Picked over to death, dirty and disgusting inside – even more so than most thrifts. And ever since the bedbug epidemic I don’t shop at any thrift shops that look even remotely dicey in the ‘hood. I stay away from Beacon’s Closet, The Thing and both Williamsburg and Greenpoint’s Salvation Army’s for the most part. I’m just too afraid of bringing home something that I won’t be able to get rid of. (There’s a dating joke in there somewhere…)

And speaking of bedbugs, reader Adam Berkowitz “wanted to make sure we were aware that it’s now a lot easier to combat paying rent when bedbugs aren’t kept under control.”

Well, at least that’s some good news.

  8. Neighborhood Questions: Noize

    by Justine

Noise in the nabe has been a hot topic lately. Personally, I feel like living in NY one should be expecting noise. Especially on the weekends. But this reader emailed me and more than anything I’m curious as to what’s going down on the other side of the ‘Point with cars & music on Saturday nights?

    Hey,
Do you or any of your readers experience the LOUD music coming from what must be 50 cars at Norman and Kingsland on the weekends? They were out there ALL night Saturday, despite many filed noise complaints. This seems to happen every Saturday night. What can be done?

What can be done? I’d just call the 94th precint and tell them to send a car over. Likely that will lower the music for awhile but unless they’re doing something especially illicit (Might be some drag racing going on?) besides cranking their car radios on a Saturday Night, I’d just get over it. Once it gets cold out, they’ll probably be gone.

I’m never over there, so if anyone knows what the deal is – chime in!

  9. Running Just As Fast As We Can

    by Kea

I know that some of us Greenpointers are runners. I’m a runner and I frequently see fellow runners plugging along down Franklin, taking gulps of stinky air, making their ways to either the bridge or the track. But lets be honest. Running in Greenpoint isn’t easy. Heavy air aside, there are also the random piles of dog poo to hurdle, sidewalk diners to dodge and delicious bars to distract. Sometimes lacing up the old Sauconies for the fitness odyssey that is a jog in our hood can seem taxing to say the least.

But on October 12th, we Greenpoint runners will need to get off our asses for a good cause and run in the Get To The ‘Point 5K Run. This run is actually good for a few of reasons. Along with raising money for St. Stan’s Athletic League – its only $15 bucks to register ($20 if you choose to put off registration until the day of the race) AND the run is at 1pm! Usually these kind of events are held early in the morning which has never really fit into my weekend coma-like sleep schedule.

Last year’s winner finished the dash in 15:24 – the amount of time it will probably take for you to decide whether or not you want to run the race. I’m signing up and I advise you to sign up – all Greenpointers deserve a Michael Phelps moment!
