    Fashion Indie Week in Brooklyn:

25 Independent Designers Set to Showcase During Fashion Indie Week Brooklyn

For anyone who has ever looked at the Brooklyn Bridge and thought, “That would make a killer runway.” your day has come…

July 30th, 2008, Brooklyn, NY- Fashion Indie Media is proud to announce the premier launch of Fashion Indie Week Brooklyn, September 3rd – 10th, a week-long celebration of some of the budding borough’s finest up & coming designers.

Beginning days before Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and ending just before the final model hits the runways of Bryant Park, Fashion Indie Week Brooklyn will bring together 25 of the cities most promising designers for a series of runway shows, in-store events, trunk shows, after-parties, and sales that will span across popular nabes like Williamsburg, DUMBO, and Cobble Hill.

“We have met hundreds of amazing Brooklyn-based designers who just don’t get the recognition they deserve. It has always been a goal of Fashion Indie Media to create opportunities for these designers to get in front of our readership,” says Internet rogue and Fashion Indie President Daniel Saynt.

Designers on the roster include Fashion Indie favorites like Love Brigade, Zulema Griffin, Harriet’s Alter Ego, Hillary Flowers, New York Couture, San & Soni, Brooklyn Royalty and Sheila Frank.

“There is more to New York than just Manhattan and we feel that Fashion Indie Week Brooklyn is the missing puzzle piece to IMG’s Fashion Week,” says CEO Busie Matsiko.

Fashion Indie Week Brooklyn has partnered with popular online designations like Unscene.com, FashionIndie.com, SwoonMagazine.com, and over 35 other online fashion magazines. The influx of web activity has already caught the eye of many sponsors who have longed to reach a fashion-focused customer during fashion week. Smart Car, GURU Energy Drink, Unscene and Berkeley College are already on board to sponsor the week of activity.

So the idea of a sort of fashion week of our own is pretty exciting. It’s sorta like our own little Project Runway. So far I spied a couple of Williamsburg based designers in the mix such as Brooklyn Royalty, Barens & Belle and Steel Couture.

There will be fashion shows and events going on all over Brooklyn, but me and the Greenpointers gals are going to try and check out those Billyburg events this September.

  3. Lazy Catfish Lover

    by Kea

Alright, Alright – so you won’t be finding the Lazy Catfish on the Sub neighborhoods of Greenpoint map and I know this is hardly breaking news, but I can’t go another day without professing my love for this place. The tattered facade screamed wharf rats so I steered clear for the longest time – until one night when passing, I could no longer resist the wafting frylock aroma and followed my nose into the bar (my inner fat kid still dictates 90 percent of the decisions I make). To my delight I found the perfect equation of bar features! A new flat screen loomed over the bar with a game on, a glowing jukebox was like a tractor beam in the corner, there was a back room that had games and more seating and the whole place appeared really clean. I feel like I just described an adult Chuck E. Cheese or something – dont let that dissuade you from continuing to read.

You are probably thinking, generic sports bar, I got it. But its not. Its really special and this is why: its generally pretty quiet and by quiet I mean, not teeming with hipsters and not blaring music so loud you can’t interact with the person next to you. The bartenders are really nice and helpful. They love helping – they’ve helped me give directions, with minimums on tabs, I mean, you name it, they will help you with it.

But the thing that keeps me coming back to this Shangri La is not the Buck Hunter or the free PBR on Tuesday nights: its the divine, succulent, I-could-eat-a-million-of-these catfish poppers. I’m day dreaming just typing those words. Catfish poppers. They come in a little brown bag and they are the perfect addition to any pitcher of beer.

If the prospect of catfish makes you a little squeamish (I mean, its a fish with facial hair) there are a million other fried options. But you have to at least give them a try, because once you pop you cant stop – or at least thats what happened to me.

  4. Neighborhood Gossips

    by Justine

While enjoying an always fragrant jaunt on the G train yesterday, my best friend told me that Whole Foods was coming to Greenpoint. I did some quick online research and could not find any actual confirmation. The Whole Foods website is playing coy and simply saying there is a store in development in “Brooklyn” .

I am not really a girl who quibbles over rumor vs. fact, so I am just going to start imagining the Garden vs. Whole Foods throwdown now.

If I were a better person, I would say that I was going to support my local Greenpoint institution and scoff at yet another huge corporation invading the Point.

But I am pretty much without a soul at this point.

I am going to rock that Whole Foods hot/cold bar like my mom rocks prescription pills.

  6. Quickie: Sakura Finally Looking Alive

    July 30, 2008 by Justine

I just walked past the old hardware store on the corner of Noble & Manhattan Ave where the Sakura joint has been supposedly coming since December.

Well – it’s wide open and being worked on as I speak. They have quite a nice wood open air front look that seems to be becoming popular lately. I was on the phone and couldn’t snap a pic but leave it to Eater to have one up already.

  7. Rent to Own?!

    by Justine

I have a question regarding the real estate market here in Greenpoint. I need some smarty pants agent or landlord to enlighten me about what I just found out.

My VP at work has lived in Williamsburg for awhile, she arrives via MO (not relevant). She has tired of her nabe, the L train, higher rents so on and so forth. So she comes and tells me she’s coming to Greenpoint!

VP – “I am going to be your neighbor; so tell me about the G train..”

Me – “Wow, that’s great! I tell all the cool places she will be near and pretty much what to expect from her commute.

VP – “I am really excited, for what I paid in Billyburg (she will now have a roommate), I am gettting a duplex with a yard!”

Me – “That’s so cool, good for you.. (I am happy for her; she is cool people)

    Here’s where I am dumbfounded-

VP – ” Yeah and it’s “rent to own” so I have the option to buy and every month the rent goes into an escrow account…

    Me – “Really?”

WTF, where is there rent to own in Greenpoint? This is not a new structure. She is living in an existing building.

So tell me people where can I rent to own? Justine has seen listings like this in Staten Island. I demand to know where else? Tell me people! While I am happy for her, I am seething jealousy. I’m sure that isn’t proper English… whatever.

Please tell me this is just amazing luck and everyone throws away rent money.

  9. The New Kids On The Block

    by Justine

No not those new kids. Our new kids!

I’ve had a couple of new writers join Greenpointers this week and I am psyched to welcome Krissy and Amanda to the fold. I was so thrilled with Lady Lorimer that I decided adding even more peeps to the mix would be fun.

Krissy is already cracking me up and Amanda has me really excited to see her Pic-Me idea. I almost can’t wait until she gets back from vacation to start. All the contributers put their name as a label on their entries so feel free to click on the right sidebar and check out each writers individual posts.

With more writers, I imagine there will be more posts to read and more varied opinions. As the creator of this blog I definitely put no reins on any of these writers posts. All I ask is that they keep it to mostly Greenpoint (with some Billyburg in there for good measure). Other than that, these people are free to write about whatever or whomever they choose. And down the road there may definitely be conflicting opinion posts – it’s a free blogosphere, I say.

So I just wanted to officially welcome them both and I look forward to reading my own blog with them writing!
