  1. It Rained on the Parade!

    June 30, 2008 by Kea

This Sunday marked Jelly NYC’s inaugural pool party. Though I found the rain hardly a deterrent being the Northwesterner that I am, the storm kept the hordes of fair weather pool partiers at bay. The Hold Steady headlined to the delight of rows of wet devotees while the pool party regulars stuck to the dodge ball courts and the slip-n-slide. Most noteworthy was the fact that the beer selection has grown and now includes Bud Light (for those watching the waist line). Though I thought the Hold Steady gave a particularly unmemorable performance, J.Roddy and The Business an opening act from Baltimore, knocked my socks off! They were like Metallica meets Lynard Skynard but with much better hair!

I know the pool parties get a mixed bag when it comes to reviews (I mean, they are annoying if you live on Lorimer – but you always find yourself stopping by anyway) – but as of right now, this will be the last season of free music at the McCarren Pool and there are some good line ups this summer. Next weekend presents Ronnie Spector and The Rabbit Factory Soul Revue. If you don’t like the music, you should go for the people watching and if you don’t like the people watching, you should go for the music – if you don’t like any of those, go for the Bud Light.

  2. Sunday Snaps: Greenpointers Pool

    June 29, 2008 by Justine

I’ve decided to revive my Sunday Snaps posts with pictures from the Greenpointers pool on Flickr I created in February. All are welcome to join and photos should obviously concentrate on Greenpoint. I’ve noticed some pretty good contributions from people and I want to show them off!

  3. Bodega Burning II

    by Justine

I just uploaded the pictures my sister GG took of the bodega fire on Greenpoint & Manhattan Aves this morning. Lots of gratuitous fireman shots, too.

The last shot is of one of our friendly neighborhood bums who frequents the corner where the fire took place. He seems to have relocated to HSBC across the street.

You can view the entire Flickr set here.

  5. Bodega Burning

    by Justine

At about 4am this morning the bodega downstairs and next door to my sisters apartment on the corner of Greenpoint & Manhattan Aves, had a serious fire. Thankfully, no one was hurt and my sisters place is a-ok sans smelling a little smoky.

It woke her up and she managed to take a bunch of pictures that I should have up later today. She spoke with firemen and people on the scene. The cause of the fire appeared to be bad electrical wiring according to first responders, but nothing official has been said yet.

Right now the place is boarded up including the apartments upstairs. GG mentioned axes being hacked through the place. I feel bad for the renters and just another reason why renters insurance is so necessary.

More on this later – with pictures from the scene last night. Also, if anyone has pictures they want to share, let me know and I will link to them as well.

Update: The Flickr set of the photos my sister took can be found here. And bitch*cakes has these good shots of the inside damage.

  7. Lady Lorimer Joins Greenpointers

    June 27, 2008 by Justine

A few weeks ago I made a post about maybe adding some additional peeps to author this blog. I didn’t really know exactly what I was looking for, it was kind of an open call to all Greenpointers. I got a couple of bites and honestly, I’m still looking for one or two more people so feel free to contact me if you’re interested, but I did find one that I really, really liked.

I’m very excited to have Kea join me in writing this blog. She’s not a native ‘Pointer but she’s got a good sense of humor and seems like a normal, smart and friendly chick. I know I’m looking forward to see what she’s got up her sleeve.

Be nice and make comments to welcome her.

Tomorrow night is that Mizz Greenpoint thing at East Coast Aliens. I am curious to see just how bad it is, but I think I’ll instead save my $20 for something more useful. – Brooklyn Glamour

Like maybe I’ll take three friends with me to the totally awesome 2nd Annual UnFancy Food Show on Sunday 6/29 (It’s only a $5 donation!). Me and the sister are absolutely checking it out. And I’m ridiculously excited they’re having my SixPoint there. – Brooklyn Based

The Domino Sugar sign is staying put. The “revisions — approved yesterday by the Landmarks Preservation Commission — have found a spot for it atop the roof of the refinery building it’s preserving that will be flanked by new towers.” That rocks. – Metro

The 126 perv might’ve touched girls “as young as 11 years old”! I forgot that 126 changed from being 7th through 9th grade to being 6th through 8th… That one year can make a big difference maturity-wise. Eleven year old girls are BABIES! The article also mentions that “The DA’s office will also look into possible criminal charges against Williams.” Good. – WCBStv.com

Speaking of crime, the Brooklyn Paper thinks they’re mighty witty with their crime in Greenpoint “Gunpoint” Brooklyn report. Come on, you’re scaring the hobbit hipsters. – Brooklyn Paper & Williamsburg Is Dead

The Triple Five Soul and Vespa tenants have finally moved in to 33 Nassau Ave. Rumor has it they’re trying to court a supermarket for the ground level. Can anyone say Trader Joes and two buck chucks? Ok, that’s probably just a wet dream but ya never know… – Brownstoner

Regina Spektor is coming to McCarren Pool August 15th and a huge ass music shopping experience will be at Warsaw on Sunday. – Brooklyn Vegan
