In the past few days, the familiar Anytime sign has been removed and replaced by an even more-familiar “Commercial Space for Rent / Capri Jet Realty Corp” placard. As of 5 pm Tuesday, the restaurant was still answering their phone and accepting take-out orders. The staff chuckled when we asked about the signage swap, insisting the owner is just “renting out commercial space” and that the restaurant is still doing business as usual. A call to the realtor was not returned as of this posting.
Who else delivers greasy goodness, beer and a pack of cigs when me and my friends are wasted, high and need munchies like fried perogis and jalapeno poppers? Huh? Who is going to that if Anytime disappears?!
I’m not one of those crazy eco-nuts but I do try and do my part. I recycle my beer bottles shut the water off while I brush my teeth and I carry totes. Mostly I carry totes cause they’re cuter than plastic bags and easier to lug around since you can put them over your shoulder, but at least I’m doing my part.
Hayden-Harnett is usually entirely too expensive for my modest budget but they have a cute tote for a do-able $27. Plus 100% of Hayden-Harnett’s proceeds from the sale of our GREEN IS GOOD organic cotton tote supports Farm Aid’s efforts to promote local, organic, and sustainable farming through education and training.
All I can think of is Willie Nelson, but he’s a cool cat so alls good.
Gothamist did a sneak peek on The Habitat. I took a peek inside last week as well and it looks small but cute. It’s a little kitschy, but I like that so I’ll definitely check it out when it opens.
Brooklyn cook, caterer, and instructor Terry Corrao hosts a new documentary about a Polish Easter celebration in Brooklyn, New York. Corrao visits the Gubernat family of Greenpoint, the second largest Polish neighborhood in the U.S., during Easter Week to show how they keep Polish Easter traditions alive. Features pisanki, the art of intricate egg painting with wax; crafting a decorative butter lamb and dessert lamb; shopping in Greenpoint food stores for kielbasa and cheeses; preparing a traditional Easter basket for church blessing; and a classic Polish soup prepared by grandmother “Babcia” for Easter dinner.

I’m, interested in people here whom walk, part, some,or all of their distance to work, even a short walk to the G train, to those who walk over the Pulaski Bridge, or to the L on Bedford.
I’m interested in what they carry, what they wear, if they walk with someone, or alone, if it’s done for exercise, or convenience, is it cost effective, safe, etc.
Zagat’s is now accepting rates and reviews for NYC restaurants! From March 12 – April 27th you can rate and review all your favorite places in the five boroughs and you get rewarded with a free 2009 Zagat Guide when it comes out. How cool is that? Get over there now and rate your favorite Greenpoint joints.
Plus this year “there will be awards for the “wittiest” and “best” surveyors. The winners will be determined by a vote from other surveyors, and awards will be announced with the release of the guide.” So all you Yelp Elite members can try your hand at impressing the Zagat folks.
Search Referrers of the Day is basically a quick post of whatever weird ass referral gets someone to that site. If you’ve ever checked your stats you probably get some weird ones yourself. Just today I got “Polish Girls in Brooklyn Myspace”. Not the strangest one I received but something tells me this person was looking for something a little racier than what I’m offering here… Anyway, the site is fun for a daily chuckle.
So when I spied this post I thought not much of it.
“bank robbery at hsbc in greenpoint brooklyn on march 7 2008″ (3/7/08)
A bandit stole nearly $5,000 from a bank at the corner of Manhattan and Greenpoint avenues on March 7.
Police say that the 6-foot-2 thief, clad in black from his baseball cap to his sneakers, approached a teller window at about 11:45 am.
Not that bank robberies are a big secret but usually you don’t hear about them for a few days, yet this search was the day of… I wonder if the thief Googled himself while he counted his $5k.

I passed by tonight and noticed a chalkboard read something to the effect of them having a new revamped menu coming soon and then tonight I get the comment below…
Hi to all from Brooklyn Label-
We’d like to let everyone know what’s up lately at Brooklyn Label. We have brought on a new Head Chef, Ed Bode, whom some of you already know from Union Picnic. We’re happy to have him and look forward to the additions he will bring to our kitchen and menu.
As for the plethora of other questions:
1. Booze IS coming, we have been approved for our liquor license but have to finalize a permit from the previous owners first. If you’ve ever dealt with the city on anything, you know, I’m sure, this means we could have our license in a couple of weeks, or, mostly likely, a couple of months. In the mean time, we are going to a winter schedule and closing at 7pm. When we have our license and spring has sprung outdoor seating, we will reintroduce dinner.
2. We are working very hard to improve things at BL, from bringing in more vegan and vegetarian options to changing over to soy oil (instead of butter) to cook our eggs, hash browns, and some of our breakfast entrees. Many of our purveyors have hiked their prices substantially, especially baked goods due to a huge increase in flour prices this year (I won’t even go into the politics driving that issue). When we’ve needed to we’ve raised prices to reflect our increased. We’ve been looking at different distributors to try to cut costs, and when we can, we will reflect it in our prices.
3. Brunches here are crazy, there are no two ways about it.
4. We appreciate the hard work that went into starting up Brooklyn Label, and we believe we can continue to improve.
Thanks to all of our regular customers and weekend brunch-warriors for coming to our restaurant. We’ll continue to listen to your feedback.
Sincerely-
April Goettle GM, Brooklyn Label
I think it’s great that the new management over there is ‘listening to feedback’. Brunch is always crazy there but that’s still no excuse for the seriously bad attitudes of the staff there. It takes a lot for me to say that because I know that being a waitress/waiter/host/hostess is no easy task - especially when things are crazy. But the fact that every single time I’ve been in there I’ve felt that the staff was either rude or incompetent – or both – has to count for something.
I’ve witnessed it take ten minutes to turn a table over there. The people have left and then it’s five minutes or more before the table is cleaned and then yet another five minutes or more before the table is sat. All this while there are twenty people waiting staring at the table. It’s like BL is more concerned with hiring cute hipsters instead of actual people who can do the job.
I have no problem waiting for a table or service if the person who finally does come around is nice and genuinely apologetic for the wait. It’s Waitressing 101. I still eat there but only as a last resort which is a shame because it’s right downstairs. If there’s any improving going to go on, I sincerely hope they take a look at the attitude and competence of the staff. A smile works wonders kids.
At first glance, the structure looked futile, but on closer inspection the beams are preventing the building’s swelling bricks from crashing down onto the pavement. The rain gutter bends along the facade’s perilous curve. To get into the G&R Deli on the ground floor, one is forced to duck under the joists or to circle around the structure to enter the store. The whole thing resembles a Mark Di Suvero sculpture carelessly hammered together by a bunch of mentally disabled teenagers. It looks like a dangerous joke.
Nevertheless, my husband was optimistic. When I pointed out that a group of bums had chosen the space underneath the scaffolding as their hangout, he said, “No, those are construction workers. They are fixing the building.” When I countered that even for construction workers they seemed awfully drunk and in poor shape, he got defensive. “Maybe they are the architects.” I had to point out that one of the “architects” had ankles swollen to the size of logs.
My sister forwarded me her Amex email she got recently showing this years DIB participants. There are a lot of great places to choose from and even three Greenpoint restaurants are in on the action this year. Two Polish places and Park Luncheonette.
I had brunch at PL last week and it was pretty damn good. They offered up a juice special that was billed as a ‘detox’ but you could add gin and make it a ‘retox’. Brill!
