I was just reading your blog and I wanted to know if you have noticed the recent growth of Club Exit on Greenpoint Avenue. The level of noise on Thursday through Saturday night has grown tremendously. I have also noticed that in the morning there is garbage everywhere. I have spoken to the police after an incident on my corner that made me uncomfortable and they said that there were a lot of complaints from residents. What are your thoughts on this? Have you heard the same thing from other residents?

My sister lived on Leonard Street around the corner from Club Exit and one night when she was hosting a small theme party (Polish Night, ironically) me and a friend went around the corner to pick up some more beer when we were greeted with a stabbing victim, complete with pools of blood on the sidewalk. Guess where the guy was partying?

I also sent this persons email on to my sister who wound up moving just a block away and therefore still down the block from Club Exit.

Why don’t you tell your witness to a stabbing outside of Exit story… I call the cops at least once a month because of the horrible ruckus that is made by the patrons of Exit. All I can do is pray they will feel as though they have outgrown where they are and move to a larger much less central and residential spot.

Another story I heard is about a neighborhood local who filed a formal compliant against the owners of Exit because of the loud and drunken crowds that spilled onto her street and was paid a not so nice visit from a person who she believes to be the Polish “Mob”- if such a thing exists, telling her to mind her neck. She claims that the Police are paid off by these people. Who knows if that is true, but Exit is a blight on Greenpoint.

I wish the Goons (they are huge!) that man the door at Exit would clear the immediate area after closing instead of unleashing a hundred drunken assholes to wake the neighbors within a 3 block radius.

The Polish Mob and crooked cops, oh my!

  6. Darts Are Coming!

    March 21, 2008 by Justine

*** PLEASE SEE UPDATE HERE ***

I met Mike from nycdarts.com last night and he was spending the evening going to local bars in Greenpoint and Williamsburg passing out the flyers below. So now all we have to do is patiently wait and hope that the bars rally and call him to sign up!

If you’re a bar interested in participating – the info is below, get cracking!

    Darts are coming…

to Greenpoint & Williamsburg. The league will be starting in a couple of weeks (early April 2008). League will be on Wednesday or Thursday nights at 8 PM depending on which night bars want. Bars that are interested should call Mike as soon as possible to register or if you have any questions.

Here are a few things about the league. You will need FIVE players to play a complete match. Four can play and only lose 2 points by forfeit out of 21 possible points. Maximum on a team is TEN players. Matches consist of 501 straight on, Cricket singles and doubles and 501 double on, double off.

Entry fee is $150 for a 15 week season, plus about 4 weeks playoffs. You are guaranteed 7 home games in full season. This season may be shortened (entry fee will be less) so as to have some time off during summer and so we can start on time in September. League seasons usually run from September to end of January, with 2 weeks off for holidays. New season starts middle of February until end of June. We usually take off July and August.

Lisacat is a contact of mine on Flickr that I always check out. I love her beautiful photos of even more beautiful cats and dogs that are usually available for adoption at the BARC Shelter.

Tonight I came across this picture of Molly and her story.

Molly was trapped in Canarsie, Brooklyn where she lived with a colony of true wild cats and a couple of friendly cats. The ferals were returned to the colony after being spayed or neutered and we’re finding homes for the “friendlies”. Bide-A-Wee, and City Critters have taken in some of our adoptables, but Molly tested positive for feline leukemia. As she is older and not showing any symptoms, we’re hoping to place her in a home with other positive cats or with an experienced cat person. She’s a playful sweetie and deserves a chance at a real home.

Come on, someone please take care of her and give her a nice home?

  9. New Tenants

    March 20, 2008 by Justine

A few interesting tenants coming to Greenpoint. Triple 5 Soul is moving their headquarters from Williamsburg and we’re getting a Vespa showroom. Now I’ve loved Vespas since I was a kid but they’ve just become such an icon of the hipster that now I’m slightly ashamed that I’m excited about it.

Four tenants have signed 10-year leases at a former baking-supply company’s building at 33 Nassau Ave. in Greenpoint after the new landlord made multi-million dollar renovations, according to Crain’s New York Business. The tenants have leased 43,600 square feet in total of the 88,000 square feet available.

The first tenant is Triple Five Soul, an urban clothing company, who leased 16,000 square feet of the second floor. Brokers for the company, Michael Higgins and William Jordan of CB Richard Ellis Inc., said that Triple Five Soul is paying less than the asking price of $24 per square foot, but did not disclose the actual figure. The clothier, currently at 185 Wythe Ave., is expected to move to Greenpoint in a couple months.

The Lower Eastside Service Center is leasing 10,000 square feet on the ground floor of the building to house inventory for its thrift store, Angel Street Thrift Shop. The LESC is a non-profit that assists people who have mental illness or substance abuse issues; its thrift store is located at 118 W. 17th St. in Manhattan. The company was represented by Grant Dolgin of Kalmon Dolgin.

The other part of the ground floor is being leased by high-end florist SBK Associates and Vespa. SBK Associates have already moved into the 13,000 square feet leased for the company to use as a warehouse and design studio. Vespa leased 5,000 square feet on the ground floor to house their showroom. Vespa is expected to open in May. Melissa Smith of Samco Properties was the broker for SBK Associates; and Jeffrey Unger of Kalmon Dolgin represented Zach Schieffelin of Vespa.

Kalmon Dolgin Affiliates bought the Greenpoint building two months ago for almost $11 million. They have poured “a few million dollars” more into renovating the entire building, according to what executive vice president Neil Dolgin told Crain’s. The landlord represented itself in the deal.

  10. No Power Plant!

    by Justine

    Just got word from GWAP:

The New York State Siting Board has voted unanimously to dismiss the TransGas power plant proposal. The board found the project was not in the public interest and has cleared the way for the City to create a 28-acre waterfront park on the Bushwick Inlet. TransGas has the right to appeal, but we fully expect that they will be completely unsuccessful.

Congratulations and thank you to our elected officials, the lawyers who helped prepare the case, Columbia Law School Environmental Law Clinic, Pace Energy Project, and to the hundreds of community volunteers who have worked so hard over the years to stop the power plant from destroying our neighborhood.

This calls for a celebration, but we’re not sure when and where yet. We’ll keep you posted. After 7 ½ long years of struggle we promise it will be a doozy of a party!
