Interesting post on Brownstoner regarding the Paris Shoe Store. Seems like they’re trying to put some earlier work into approval. From what I can see it looks like they haven’t massacred the place like 116 Franklin.
It’s comforting to Paris Shoe Store still in business and looking exactly the same.
Speaking of the Greenpoint library, head librarian Mel Gooch and her team have organized a Book Swap for this Saturday, January 19th between 3 and 4:30 PM. Readers of all ages are invited to the Greenpoint Library at 107 Norman Ave. to trade books they are finished with for new literary delights.
All books for exchange must be in good condition and books of all languages are welcome. There will also be a free raffle for a Brooklyn Public Library tote bag.
For more information, call 718-349-8504. For a listing of other special events, including classes, at any of Brooklyn’s pubic libraries, check out the BPL’s website.
The new plan means G service in Queens will end at Court Square in Long Island City, one stop shy of a key location – Queens Plaza on the E, R and V lines. That will force riders to make an extra transfer to get access to Queens Blvd. and Forest Hills.
It’s just so fucking ridiculous to me that the G Train keeps getting shafted. Living in Greenpoint, many of us tend to go to Queens a lot more for things because it’s closer. All my life we went to the movies on Steinway, the mall at Queens Center. We never ventured into other parts of Brooklyn for much of anything.

Just think of how much better you’ll feel for screwing your friends boyfriend, or for calling out of work cause you were hungover, if you do some real deal volunteer work. Good thing I don’t have a conscience, but some of you may!
GWAPP needs a few volunteers over the next week to help us prepare for the big meeting on Thursday, Jan 17.
Specifically we need people to:
* hand out flyers to subway riders at evening rush hour * put up flyers at various storefronts in the G/W area * man (or wo-man) the sign-in desk at the event * help run the projector during the presentation
If you can help with any of these tasks, please contact us at info@gwapp.org or call 718.383.3072
Over the years, innumerable articles, blogs and forums have referred to the G train as the stepchild of the subway system. But that’s not quite right — it’s not the stepchild, it’s more like that unwanted drunk uncle everyone has. It’s embarrassing and awkward and doesn’t quite behave like it’s supposed to, but you keep it around because, well, it’s family.
My favorite ‘hobby’ has always been vintage clothing. I was that girl who wore my grandfathers suit jackets and ties with torn Levi’s and Doc Martens in the late 80′s. In general, I just like old things.
From the past, to England, to Manhattan Ave right here in Greenpoint. It’s just the sort of thing that makes everything seem so neighborly. And it makes me smile.
I’m not really one for protests or community activism, but things are getting a little out of hand construction-wise in Greenpoint and Williamsburg and it sure would be nice to have some more parks (preferably not ones at Newtown Creek, please!).
TOWN HALL on rezoning at WARSAW at 7pm on Jan 17th (261 Driggs Ave in Greenpoint)
The neighborhoods of Greenpoint/Williamsburg are at a point of crisis and opportunity.
Crisis because rampant development threatens what little open space and parks we have. Promises of additional open space made in the 2005 rezoning have never materialized. However, opportunities abound. We have promises made for terrific park facilities all over the neighborhood. We just have to make it happen.
But we need your help.
This month, GWAPP will host a Town Hall meeting to update the community on parks and rezoning in the neighborhood. We’ll also update you on the TGE power plant fight (no, folks it ain’t over yet).
Here’s a sneak peak at the agenda:
* What is GWAPP? * TGE power plant fight *Sludge tank status * India Street End Park Project * Transmitter Park (end of Greenpoint Ave) *Bushwick Inlet park plans * McCarren Park Pool renovation* State Park at N7th * Tree Planting
For the first time in a decade, the world-renowned Moscow Circus will visit New York – and its Russian acrobats, clowns, jugglers and contortionists are coming to Greenpoint.
The troupe is coming to entertain at Warsaw later this month. Profits from the show will go to Town Square.
Town Square is a neighborhood group, based in Greenpoint and Williamsburg Brooklyn. Formed in September 2004, Town Square is dedicated to building a vibrant community and enriching our quality of life, through activities that inspire creativity and imagination, teach respect and cooperation and support the celebration of life.
My Dad came to visit and we went over to Casa Mon Amour for lunch – sans drinks. Their liquor license expired. But the food as always is delicious and more than made up for the fact. Plus, me and Pops hit Jack O’Neills afterwards for our fill of swill. Later on, I hungout at Red Star to check out the Steelers game and wound up not making it home until 9am. To me, that’s a good night.
Speaking of Casa Mon Amour, one of the ex-bartenders Bethany has gotten a new gig at the pretty brand spanking new one month old Vinas.
Viñas 109 S. 6th St., nr. Bedford Ave., Williamsburg; 718-782-2333 Colombia-born Mike Jaramillo is a mini-tycoon in Williamsburg, where his holdings include Sweet Farm bakery and Maxim gym. This weekend, he opens Viñas, a South Side homage to his Latin American roots as well as those of his Puerto Rican chef, Henry Lopez Jr. Spanish and Latin American wines will be offered alongside Pan-Latin-inspired fare like quail a la plancha with a reduction of chipotle, espresso bean, and honey, and the 75-seat space is furnished with salvaged wood that’s meant to send the same eco-friendly message as the recycled takeout containers they’ll pack your leftovers in.
Definitely be sure to check the place out and be sure to say hi to Bethany – she’s a doll!
