Just came across this – there seems to have been a fire this morning on Manhattan Ave. Seems to be a limo/car service place but it might be apartments upstairs?
Well, here’s a great thing to take to those holiday parties. The cookies are made to order and really spectacular looking. The host/hostess will thank you for it.
Props to Alter for their entry in Zagat’s Best of Brooklyn guide!
ZAGAT Survey “Best of Brooklyn” 2007 issue came out today! They have a lovely review of Alter in the shopping section. You can buy it at WORD Bookstore ($12.95), just a block away from Alter.
I’m going to pick this up myself to see what other places in the hood may be included. Actually, I’m going to pick up two – an excellent stocking stuffer!
On Saturday December 8th, 3rd Ward is proud to present the 1st-ever Handmade Holiday Craft Fair and Open House where local artisans and craft mavens alike will be selling their wares in the classic marketplace style amidst an Open House filled with free tutorials and demos in vintage furniture restoration, sustainable lamp design, video animation, metal work, graphic design and more – all led by 3rd Ward Members and top artists and creative professionals.
We will be featuring special live performances, giveaways, discounts on membership, classes and studio rentals with steady beats, tasty refreshments and a fabulous photo booth on hand to keep the energy going throughout the day.
And right along with the spirit of giving we are going to be taking food and clothing donations for local shelters so please bring along some canned goods and clothing to donate to those in need. Giving is goodness…
So come out to 3rd Ward on Saturday December 8th and support your local artists and designers this holiday season and show Brooklyn the love it shows you every day.
The craft fair and open house will start at 12 noon and go until around 8pm with programs running throughout the day.

To have that drink tonight to commemorate Repeal Day!
There are no outfits to buy, costumes to rent, rivers to dye green. Simply celebrate the day by stopping by your local bar, tavern, saloon, winery, distillery, or brewhouse and having a drink. Pick up a six-pack on your way home from work. Split a bottle of wine with a loved one. Buy a shot for a stranger. Just do it because you can.
I received the following email from Nicole of Greenpoint and it just warms my heart to see all of the local charitable things going on around the hood this season. There’s the Toy Drive at Boulevard Tavern and at The Diamond from Sat, 12/1-Tues 12/18 they’re doing a Coat Drive/Canned Food Drive raffle where even 3rd place gets you a $50 bar tab!
We have created a NY Cares Coat Drive drop-off at the Church of the Ascension in Greenpoint to make an easy nearby drop-spot for people who wish to donate coats to this good cause. It involves nothing more than people bringing by gently-used coats and they get a tax write-off and everyone feels good and people who need coats get them.
Drop offs can be made at the Java Street entrance to Ascension Hall during the following times:
Walking down Manhattan Avenue the other night I noticed five open storefronts just in the two blocks from Noble to Greenpoint. First up the hardware store on Noble and Manhattan sported a dayglo green oaktag sign indicating a Sakura IV (or VI?) was opening soon. Seems like a Chowhounder noticed as well.
Then across the street at what was Ricky’s for a hot second, got a giant Commercial Space For Rent sign in the window. It’s really one huge fucking sign.
A couple of doors from that is a space where behind the torn down awning reads Sundae Delight (I vaguely think I remember that from when I was a kid – or maybe I’m thinking of Fat Louie’s). I saw some lights going on in the back area of that, so maybe something will be there soon. I think it was a 99¢ Store before. I’d like to think that the real estate is becoming too costly for another one to take it’s place…
And what about that one that has been vacant forever, that retro front store between Milton and Greenpoint? Blue and chrome, with a curved glass. I love that. Totally the sort of place I’d love to rent and turn into a vintage housewares and home decor store. How hipster of me.
Then finally, the LA Cafe Pizzeria Restaurant joint that just closed. It’s already outfitted for a restaurant, I imagine it will stay one. It’d be nice if it stayed Italian, too since there’s not a lot to choose from. I could absolutely do without another Asian joint.
It would be nice if I could go out and get pictures of these places or even the addresses but I am a lazy bitch and you should know what I’m talking about without visual stimuli, anyway.
It’s 1996 and my surprise 21st birthday party is being thrown by my Dad at Teddy’s. My Dad and his best friend who’s like an uncle to me have been hanging there since Partners closed. It was a great party. Afterwards, a few of us went to JD’s on Meeker, which is now Boulevard Tavern.
That night one of the most horrific things my eyes had ever seen happened. I went into the ladies room to find my overweight and seriously unfortunate looking ex-roommate bent over the sink with my uncle’s tongue in her mouth. To this day the abuse he received from my father and I is nothing shy of torturous. It’s a small price for him to pay considering I have that vile picture in my head that will just never leave.
And damn them both for causing me to never enter JD’s or now The Boulevard Tavern because of their shenanigans.
But that should not affect you, dear reader, from enjoying the fact that their kitchen is now open and open late. And they’re also doing a toy drive.
