  1. Deutsch-burg

    November 30, 2007 by Justine

I love finding out about a new bar opening! Yay! This one I spied on Williamsburg Is Dead. Gothamist also speaks of it this week.

Radegast Hall & Biergarten (113 N. 3rd St) is apparently suppose to open today and it looks like a pretty cool joint. I have to agree with the poster that I hope it’s not “pink polos and excessive use of the word “Bro” folks, either.

There’s this German place near my friends house in Staten Island – Killmeyer’s Old Bavaria Inn – that I just love. They sell these yummy large soft pretzels that go down great with beers. In the warmer months they have this fantastic outdoor space where they have live music and a bar gazebo. I’d be in heaven if this joint took after that place.

But that “Veal Schnitzel w/Scallion Sour Cream Potato Salad” for $17 scares me, too.

  2. Casa Mon Amour

    November 29, 2007 by Justine

Last night I hit Casa Mon Amour for drinks and had a great time. We wound up all ordering a bite to eat and I have to say I was seriously impressed – the food was delicious. There was even live entertainment.

I already knew I liked the place from my first visit a couple of weeks ago, but now I’m officially in amour.

  3. Greenpoint Gift Guide 2007

    November 28, 2007 by Justine

Ah, I am so excited that Christmas is coming!

I am an official holiday lover. I rock out to carols, appreciate decorations and love to shop for the perfect gifts. I think it’s side effects from growing up with a whacko mother who was a half-assed Jehovah’s Witness. The only part she really obeyed was that whole no Christmas or Birthday fun. Yes, it totally sucked.

But instead of being bitter about the holidays, I’m a big kid when it comes to Christmas and all that stuff. For the first time in many years I don’t have a car so I really want to take the time to do some local shopping. I have no desire to run to any mass market retailers to get my gifts this year.

Off the top of my head here are a few local shops in Greenpoint I plan to check out for those on my Christmas list:

Brooklynski – Just on their homepage I spied these super cute Chandelier earrings that my sister would love. Darn, they’re back ordered.

Dalaga – Their site actually points to their MySpace page but on there I spied an arrow necklace (pictured) that my BFF might like.

Zoe’s – Here you really can’t go wrong. I know my Stepmom and my older sister will enjoy any beauty product I pick out.

Alter – For my sisters stylish metrosexual boyfriend, a gift certificate from Alter will surely hit the spot.

I definitely need to explore some more with new shops opening around town all the time. Sadly, I just don’t get a chance to roam the hood as much as I would like but I think this weekend I’m going to make some time to do just that.

  4. Reality Check

    November 27, 2007 by Justine

Time for an update on Greenpoint’s little reality show girls Camille and Holly!

Miss Holly made it to the finals on I Want To Look Like a High School Cheerleader Again but didn’t take home the $50k. However she did lose over 20lbs and supposedly she’ll be continuing her workouts in McCarren Park.

Lovely Camille has fared better since being booted off Top Chef early on. She’s claimed the title of AM New York’s readers voted NYC’s Sexiest Chefs female.

Where will the next Greenpointer land in the world of reality TV?

  5. Cozy Up With Black Rabbit

    by Justine

Ah, a busy little blogger I am today!

I want to give a shout out congratulations to Kent, Anne and Kathy of Black Rabbit Bar for being featured in Time Out New York under Cozy Party Bars – I love those guys! I’m also definitely going to be checking out their Bingo Night one Sunday very, very soon!

Sandwiched between Polish discotheques and Spartan tenements, this brand-new old-world bar is nirvana for the brainiacs. Ale-buzzed groups of six or eight twentysomethings rhapsodize about literature, philosophy (no, really, they actually were) and whatever downer is moping its way over the stereo (Joy Division, Arcade Fire), huddled around the fireplace and piled into deep booths cordoned off with saloon-style doors. Couples fuel this intimate party with their quiet chatter at the mammoth cherrywood bar, while a fully restored vintage TV flickers silently in the corner.

TIP: Quiet intellectualism not your thing? Pursue hilarity instead at the bar’s comedian-hosted bingo night, Sundays from 7 to 10pm. Average drink: $7. 91 Greenpoint Ave between Franklin St and Manhattan Ave, Greenpoint, Brooklyn (718-349-1595).

  6. The Point to The Slope

    by Justine

Jeez, just trying to catch up on all that has happened in the nabe since I been gone is sucking up my first back-to-work day. Not that I’m complaining.

The Brooklyn Paper reported about the G train being officially and permanently extended to Church Avenue as was rumored a couple of months ago. This means the ability to go from Greenpoint to Park Slope just became a one train ride reality. I’m assuming this is not going to actually start until 2010 when they start working on the Culver Viaduct.

But I’m still going to bitch and moan that the G doesn’t go to Forest Hills. It drives me fucking insane.

  7. Some Bad, Sad News

    by Justine

A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine heard a rumor that LA Pizza on Manhattan Ave was closing. I didn’t mention it because truth be told, I didn’t believe it. Plus, I was in vacation mode ready to leave and didn’t have a chance to verify it. But today I got an email from reader Don Jones:

I just wanted to pass along to you some sad news. L and A Pizza on Manhattan Ave has closed. They must have been there for 35+ years. The owners were great and I am very sad as I am sure many other Greenpointers are that they closed. I grew up eating pizza there at least twice a week. I cannot wait for another Dollar store to come in. George’s is gone, St Anthony’s school, L&A, next will be the Donut shop.

    Man, this just sucks.

  8. MyAstral

    by Justine

I’m gone ten days and The Astral gets a MySpace group.

  9. Back in the New York Groove

    by Justine

I am officially back from my vacation!

It was a great time visiting my Greenpoint ex-pats in North Carolina and Virginia and spending Thanksgiving with my long time friends and their family. I’ve also had enough time with their collective children to last me until next year.

Back at work and pretty busy but I wanted to pass on two worthy fundraisers I received notice from friends going on the ‘hood this holiday season.

First up is the annual Toys for Tots shindig this Saturday. A long standing tradition in the neighborhood that grows every year.

  10. McCarren Heights

    November 15, 2007 by Justine

Bowling for BARC last night with The Heathers was a blast. We drank, we bowled, we saw Bernadette Peters and Jim Carroll.

Also met a woman who schooled me on the neighborhood of McCarren Heights. Apparently the little old ladies who lived on Lorimer between Meeker and Frost dubbed it so. How much you wanna bet they’re parents of real estate agents?

The Gutter is awesome. We’ve decided to start our own bowling posse and go once every couple of weeks. Maybe with some practice I can break 75.

I’m leaving for vacation tomorrow! I will be gone for ten days, not sure how much blogging I will do, possibly none. Won’t ya’ll miss me?
